I have a end of summer party I'm going to tonight... and the host loves Vodka..
so what would be a really good Vodka that I should buy for him? must be reasonably priced... no $200 bottles of alcohol.
please give me some brands... he likes mixed drinks.. not to drink it straight up. ;)

If he mixes the vodka, what difference does it make? Get the cheapest bottle you can find. If you want to go fancy, pour the cheap stuff in a grey goose bottle.:p
Anyway, you can't go wrong with Grey Goose.

Another vote for Grey Goose and Ketel One. I would have to add Chopin.
Booze is like audio....crap in crap out. Don't mix wih crap, if he/she knows vodka, they will taste the diff. I Know I can. I can't tell you what brand it is but can tell if it's crap or not.

Danger, Grey Goose is ridiculously overrated. It's kind of like Bose. Everyone tells you it's great, so it must be great, right?
Nope, it's just a more expensive version of Absolut. A fine Vodka to be sure, but nowhere near the upper echelon. If you want to impress your host, show up with a bottle of Chopin. Trust me.

Grey Goose and Absolut taste nothing alike. Not saying one is better than the other but they definetly taste different. I don't care for Absolut, it tastes slighty bitter and grainy to me in a Martini. Grey Goose is very smooth.
Again, IMO. To say Grey Goose is like Bose and tastes like Absolut is ridiculous.

I agree. There is no comparison between the two. Absolut is gritty and tastes like rubbing alcohol.

Sorry, but Grey Goose was merely marketed very well during the Martini craze in this country and everyone bought into the hype, just like Bose. I hear so many people say how great it is, yet they never had it, or don't know what great vodka is.
Any respectable bartender will recommend Chopin over Grey Goose if you're going to start laying some serious coin down on Vodka. I didn't say Grey Goose sucked, I said it isn't worth the price tag and it's on the same level as Absolut, which, IMO, it is.

Interesting, here's a good article from Slate.

They have Chopin as the number one and Grey Goose just a slight step above Asbsolut.

Yeah, well as anything else I can find articles supporting my POV too. Neither article means anything. I prefer Grey Goose with Stolichnaya a close second and Belvidere and Chopin and Ciroc rounding out my top 5.

Around here most drinking establishments charge the same for:
Grey Goose
Stoli's
Chopin
Belvidere
Absolut
on the rocks or straight up. Some higher end restaurants may add a surcharge to premium Vodaka but *around* here it's rare.
Skye
Smirnoff
tends to be anywhere from 0.50c - $1 less than the above
rail Vodka tends to be 0.50c -$1 less than Skye or Smirnoff or Gordons.
Most Bloody Mary's (especially on football Sunday's) add a surcharge for premuim Vodka.

I went with Ketel One, so there. :p
i like what it said on the bottle... "handcrafted in small batches, using traditional recipes at the Nolet Distillery in Holland - founded 1691
I've not had this before. so i'll be a real treat.. as i'm a vodka drinker too.. just never tried this one.
thanks for the suggestions everyone. now drink up!! :D

Just get something distilled at least 4 times, I like Stoli's myself.
The more distilled, the less impurities, the lesser chance of a hangover.

I like Svedka. It's cheap (relatively), distilled 5 times and my more serious vodka drinking friends prefer it to Grey Goose. I also like Skye better that Stoli, Absolut, o rKetel One and it's American made.

Nother decent vodka is Level.
I wouldn't say GG is like Bose. It's much better then Absocrap. But Ketel and Chopin are my favs. The only time we use absocrap is when we travel o sterilize our toothbrushes.

dam, im to late but my 2 cents is Ciroc. By far the best Vodka ive tasted. Its made from grapes, distilled 5 times and is different from any other Vodka you will taste. Its a little pricey at $32 a fifth but it is well worth it at least once. Mix it with a little tonic and wow is all i can say.

Late to this party but my "normal" brand is Ketel One however my personal favorite is Vox, (particularly if kept in freezer). Cool bottle also.
I also agree with the over hype of Grey Goose. Personally I think its a boring vodka with little to no character.

Wyborowa Exquisite is an excellent Polish vodka, but it is a bit pricey. Nemiroff is another good bottle of booze if you like traditional Russian style vodka. And no drink made with vodka can be called a Martini! Everyone knows that Martinis are made by waving a bottle of dry vermouth near a really good glass of proper gin ;-)

If you guys get a chance, you should try Vox Vodka (http://www.voxvodka.com). Good stuff. There is a bar near my place that'll make vodka martini with it and nothing but a splash of olive juice. Mmmm.

Zubrowka.
It's like Mother's Milk to the Polish people. It's great... tiny bit green (that's literal, as the infused Bison Grass makes it green), but fantastic and unique. They sell it at Bevmo.

I go with Kettle One. I don't know that it's the "best" but works for me. I gave my brother in law, who always swore by Grey Goose, a blind taste test between Kettle one and GG -
He chose the Kettle one and is now a convert!

Stoli Elite.
Thats my fav also Christiania is good and also Chopin is amazing.
Deaths Door for a more local Vodka is what I like. Imperial is pretty good too.
Jewel of Russia is one of the best I've had but Stoli Elite for when I'm going all out is awesome. Expensive but awesome.
Grey Goose is of course on hand because its what all the ladies around here like. I also mostly drink Kettle one for my "cheap" vodka because really I don't care for anything else anymore. Plus I can still just do it neat and have no problems.

You probably can't find these out your way, but Vermont Gold and Vermont White are tasty (www.vermontspirits.com). Made from maple syrup and milk respectively.
Right now my favorite is General John Stark (www.flaghill.com/fhdistillery/generaljohnstark/) which is based on apples.

A WORD FROM OUR CO-FOUNDER
Crystal Head vodka is the pure pleasure choice for consumers who wish to treat themselves, step up, and enjoy a finer vodka. Our beverage consists of the proprietary mash and the deep glacial aquifer Newfoundland water – and that’s it!
Crystal Head vodka tastes like no other vodka in the world.
That is because there is no question as to the quality and high standards applied in the production of Crystal Head vodka. It is quadruple (not over) distilled at the government of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador distillery corporation in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada.
Our vodka is thrice filtered through charcoal and then thrice filtered through Herkimer diamonds. (search Griffiss Air Force base, Rome, New York). Many common vodka producers add industrial oils in an attempt to attain satiny, velvety smoothness. This often results in an artificial, viscous mouth feel. There are zero additives in Crystal Head vodka – no glycol (an ingredient for engine anti-freeze); no citrus oil (used in its raw form as an insect exterminant); and no raw sugar (finely produced vodka does not need any sugar). Tasting notes remarked on a “vanilla, sweet flavor, dry, crisp, with a kick of heat off the finish,” making it simply unlike any other vodka.

Don't laugh but I've been getting Oregon Springs for $14.00 for a 2 liter bottle. It's actually very decent (you'd be surprised), and I drink mostly martini's. I bought a small bottle of Grey Goose the other day to compare and it wasn't really noticeably better. I'll try the Chopin though as I'm looking for something top notch to compare mine to.

My Favorite vodka's are Ciroc, Tito's and Belvedere.
Ciroc - distilled from white grapes and is very smooth. A great Vodka.
Tito's - The smoothest vodka I have ever tasted. It is just hard to find. handcrafted in Texas, it is the best vodka I have ever had. A friend of mine, who is a bartender, calls this the best kept secret. He introduced me to it and when I find it, I buy it.
Belvedere - A really good smooth Vodka. IMO smoother than grey goose.
I like grey goose but IMO it is not as good as those above. I think it has become a household name and thats what keeps it going.
