Now that we just upgraded our TV to a 42" Panny Viera, I'm thinking of taking the plunge on a new DVD player. I was thinking Oppo the 981HD with the Faroudja chip. The other option is HD players. Does anyone know if they support Divx ? I cannot locate this info any where. another reason I'm asking is that the Tosh HD is on sale here for 199$

No Divx support. Just HD DVD, DVD, and Cds. Go ahead and swallow the red pill, you wont regret it.

I'd wait and not buy a stand alone single format player. Sammy is coming out with a kick-ass combo-player in late Nov. early Dec. Should street in the $1k or less ballpark.

Skip the Oppo, it's just an SD player with upconversion, it won't come close to that of true HD.

Y spend so much when you get an A2 in the 200 price range and a PS3 or Sony BD 300 player and still have change left over to buy candy and icecream. I would never buy a 1K player at this point in the game.

Definitely agree. I kept thinking that I should wait until the format is over or until there will be good combo players, but with the prices on HD DVD players so low, why wait?

This combo machine will pretty much do it all, where as your PS3 and A2's can't.


We can't help but be a little skeptical, but according to a Samsung representative, the new Samsung BD-UP5000 Blu-ray/HD DVD combo player will have onboard decoding for all high-resolution audio formats following a firmware update, including DTS-HD Master Audio. This is great news for high-def disc fans, as the BD-UP5000 would be the first player we're aware of that has onboard decoding for DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS's losslessly compressed soundtrack format. The same representative also confirmed that both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks can be output over the analog 7.1 outputs, which will be useful for audiophiles with older receivers.

The BD-UP5000 will also be capable of sending these high-resolution soundtracks in bit-stream format to compatible AV receivers, although Advanced Content flags on certain discs could limit the usefulness of this feature (if you're interested, HDTV magazine has a good summary of the issue). We'll do hands-on testing of this issue as soon as we get our hands on a new bit-stream enabled player. Of course, with onboard decoding, you'll be able to output high-resolution audio in PCM format over HDMI, avoiding the Advanced Content flags issue.

With HQV video processing, 1080p output at 24 frames per second, full support for all high-resolution soundtrack formats (eventually) and the ability to play both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, the BD-UP5000 looks to deliver all of the major features that enthusiasts have been asking for. It's definitely a little annoying that the BD-UP5000 has a firmware update scheduled before it's released, and we've been burned enough times on promised firmware updates to be a little skeptical. Still, at $1,000 the BD-UP5000 is looking like a very solid choice for high-def movie enthusiasts, and could foreshadow a way out of the format war.


A couple more reasons why that arn't listed here; HDMI 1.3 and it will fully support HDi.


What's a PS3 go for $400 or more? Add $200 for an A2 so you've just spent $600-$700 on two inferior out of date machines. Makes little sense to do so when a few more Franklins will get you so much more.

The PS3 and A2 do not have analog outs so unless you have HDMI audio you cannot access any of the HD audio formats. Plus, the PS3 is a gaming machine, something I'd never use for movie playback.

It all depends on what you want, want a machine that will do it all, you'll pay more, or you can pay less for a machine that won't.

We'll know more about the machine when it get's closer to street but so far it looks like one hell-of-a fantastic player and in my book $1k's not bad. If Sam's BD-UP5000 gets good reviews you bet I'll be buying one and selling off my A1 and BD-P1000.

It all sounds good but I need one that will play Divx. So in the mean time I shall just hold off. I just am not enjoying the macro on my new Viera with my LG player, plus this payer has blacker than black which I can't control in the player. I couldn't even see the black bars on the Avia disk.

willow, get a toshiba A2 for cheap. it'll serve as your up-converter via hdmi. at any given time, there are 5-7 free hd dvd's with purchase/after rebate.
