View Full Version : Help me find a good amp stand . . .

With my new Odyssey Khartgo (Stratos Mod) amp coming soon, I've decided I need a good amp stand to show it off. Eventually I want to trash my crappy entertainment center from Target and display all my electronics on stands that make viewing possible. PLus, the open stands allow for easy access and tweaking.
I had something like this in mind:

Or this . . .

I want to stay within $100 per stand.
My other thought was to go to Home Depot and buy these solid cutting boards made of some very rich wood that weighs about 30lbs for $40 bucks a piece.
Thoughts?

I like the salamander one better. It looks cool with those big spikes.

How much weight will they support. The Salamander looks nice but the other looks like it would support more weight.

The platforms are enough near my budget, but the amp stands are just too much. I'd rather spend the money on gear.

So would I, but my amp weights in at 120 lbs so the last thing I want is the amp hitting the floor suddenly even from a few inches.

That's why I like the Sanus model on audio advisor. It may not be pretty, but it looks like a tank.

Not bad if the rest of your gear is silver and you want to maintain a consistent look. Some do not care, I do.

Does your amp get hot, I mean HOT. That may be a consideration.

Maybe you should design your whole system around that stand. Sell every thing and start "de novo!"

I'm told it runs pretty cool.

All my HT gear is black. I purchased the stands knowing that. All of my 2CH gear is and will be silver. The stand will coordinate with the gear. Spending that much much, and I mean lots, I cannot help but think that it may as well look good because it sure as hell sounds good. Buy K-Mart gear, use a K-Mart stand. It would be like putting the cheapest tires on a Porche.

In that light, I have used tires on my Mustang GT passed down from my brother's wreck. :( Buzz kill. However, you make a very good point with which I agree. Beautiful equipment is duly appreciated with beautiful stands.

Go you your local granite countertop manufacturer and have them make you one. You have a choice of edge treatments, stone colors, etc. They last forever, and even act as a heat sink for radient heat, though I imagine little heat would come out of the bottom of the amp. Should be around your $100 budget, or much less if you have a friend in the business. Granite slab is available in stock 3/4" or 1 3/16" thicknesses. Some shops may have thicker "cubic stone" remnants you could pick up at a reasonable cost too. Blue Pearl is my favorite granite color, but Galaxie Black or Black Pearl looks good too if you want a darker color.

Try these; I got a very solid 3" base for the TT from them. Looks great.

Yeah, do this and save plenty of dough. Just buy some heavy duty spikes from PE and you're done.

If you don't want to DIY, try a modular shelf like this one:
http://www.racksandstands.com/VTI-BL404-VI1001.html
You can use the individual shelves as amp stands or you can stack them.
HT's suggestion to go with Timbernation is a very good one, too. I've bought a few items from them.

DIY'd one last night...well the scrap aircraft aluminum was a buck a pound, but the stainless bottle stoppers were $4 for 3@ Big Lots.
You could try various laminations ,maple ,a slate insert, bamboo cutting board, mdf...arcrylic.
The floor-spike protecters are cut down 30/30 brass :D

Yeah, I decided to go the DIY route. I just bought some cherry cutting boards from Lowes that are 37 pounds a piece and 2.5" thick. Parts express is sending me some spikes.
