Help! i'm a noob monitor 10

i bought these dinosaurs off of craigslist for $150 (my wife now hates me). They seem like they're in good shape for their age (save the screws in the stands).i know you guys are probably sick of talking about these, but i could use some help. here are pics.

i hooked them up and there was some distortion at first. but after about 30 seconds i couldn't hear any . they sound good but i'm not sure when they were last used before i got them. i don't know how to test or clean them either. also i had a question about the model. I'm guessing these are the first model 10's but what about the tweeter?Is this the peerless tweeter and if so why is there a hole in them? Are they Good? any help would be appreciated. sorry i'm such a noob.

Congrats on some nice speakers. The hole is normal. Let them play a while. Stick around, and learn something about the wonderful sound that those 20+ year old speakers can produce.

Welcome; Monitor 10A's with Peerless tweeters; that's a great pair of speakers. They should have a fuse by the binding posts; contacts might be rusty. Clean them with Deoxit and they will be thankful.

any idea's which speakers are better? the 10's or the 7's. Just wanted some opinions. does anyone know where on the net i can order stands for these?not sure what you mean by the fleamarket?

also can anyone recommend a safe way to clean the tweets on the 10's?

there you go.. those Monitor 7's look great.. the 10's are nice and vintage.. the drivers can be cleaned with a soft lintless cloth and windex on the surrounds and no cleaning in needed for the center cone on those..

don't know the best way to clean the tweeter.. but maybe replacing those rusty screws would be a good place to start.

congrats and use good speaker wires, and cables do make a difference. ;)

You stole my speakers!! Nice fine. Those monitor 10's are identical to mine. I paid $150 for mine too. They have the peerless tweeters which is good. The hole was put there by Polk, I think, to change the resonant frequency of the dome.

Which is better? Let your ears be the judge. Some say the 7's are have better imaging. The 10's will have better bass. How about comparing them and posting the results. I'd be curious to know.

Congrats. I'd love to stumble on a find like that.

If you search around, you'll find some info from Ken on cleaning the fuse contacts. Ken recommends Flitz metal polish and a Q-tip, it worked like a champ. I like Deoxit for pots and RCA connections, but the metal polish is less messy and pretty fast with no drying time.

You may need to replace the binding posts as the stock ones are notoriously weak (I snapped one off while auditioning my 10B's). Polk CS recommends Parts Express part number DAYTON BPGS-25G. You'll have to drill out the old holes a little, but it's a pretty easy job.

Love My 10's , I bought 'Em new in 1977. They're still using the Original Tweeters.
