View Full Version : Good site for testing web connection speed?

I'm in computer class at school, downloaded a few things REALLY REALLY fast, I'm in awe, and wanna find a good, accurate site to test it and see how fast it really is.

What's a good site for that?

I downloaded one file that peaked at 5.12MB/sec.

I had actually used that one before I started the thread, but didn't know how to interpret the results.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 23392 kbps (2924 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 9385 kbps (1173.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Are those really big numbers that made me think it's a 23.3MB/sec connection () really kiloBITS/sec? I don't really understand kilobits versus kilobytes. But I'm assuming the smaller numbers would be the kilobytes/sec, thus giving a speed of 2.9MB/sec.

Which would mean their server isn't as fast as this connection? 'Cause I d/l'd the majority of a 1.9GB file at over 5MB/sec.

My school's connection peaked at ~9MB/s once!

Toast.Net (http://performance.toast.net/)

According to that, using the 1&1 server, this connection was off the chart...which maxes at 10MB/sec.

Same here.

Little b is kilobits, bit B is kiloBytes.

1 kilobyte is 8 kilobits, so just divide by 8.

I just asked the instructor. We're getting 10MB/sec d/l and u/l, supposedly. And the tests seem to support that pretty well.

Suffice it to say, I'm VERY green with envy.

How much would a connection like that cost the typical homeowner?

Damn....

I get about 3.8meg/sec. on the 1 & 1 server. I average 5meg/sec on some of the other links on that page.

Are you connected to that server or something? Do the other sites return that high of a speed?

80 bucks a month. Called T1 connection...

audiobliss
10-23-2007, 09:24 PM
Is that T1? What're the different categories and their speeds?

McLoki
10-23-2007, 09:27 PM
Nope - t1 is 1.54 meg\sec (up and down)

I would say fractional T3 or OC3 - either way, major bucks...

Well, there's modem (phone connection), cable, and T1...

I'm definitely checking out my rr connection when I get home in about 40 minutes.

Optimum. I find it varies depending on the time of day. I get around 10,000 kbps late at night.

Ditto here, but what else is there?

I was thinking of adding Optimum Boost- only another $15/month?

Supposed to give you 30 down/ 4 up??

BTW, I just hit 6.81 on Bandwidthplace. Not bad.

I wouldn't bother unless you're downloading a lot of large files.

Yeah, why enrich the Dolans any more than necessary.

I'm sending them close to $190 a month now!

With knology I got 2324kbps down and 368kbps up.

So, going with the numbers in my previous post (1701kb/s and 366kb/s), are those kiloBITS per second? Meaning divide by 8 and then by 1000 to get Megabytes per second? That'd be .2MB/s or 200KB/s, right?

That kinda stinks.

Lowercase b is bits, uppercase is bytes. That's around 2Mb down and 384k up. About what ADSL is supposed to be. Network speeds are usually measured in bits, not bytes. I've never understood why web browsers report downloads in Bytes.

Your download speed is higher than a T1. (1.544 Mb/s)

My speed test from Japan to San Franciso, not bad

I pinged Africa for the speed test and got the lowest results, they must be using dialup down there still.

Mine sucks because Comcast has capped my service.

I used to get like 12megs down and 4megs up but I started downloading a lot of torrents and then capped me at 3megs/384. BASTARDS!!!!
