Question about sound

hey guys, new here, and was a bit nervous to post here seeing all the audiophiles, but browsed a bit and saw how friendly the atmosphere is, so im sure someone can help..anyway here i go

Got an Onkyo 605 receiver,PS3 and Toshiba A20, everything is hooked via HDMI into an HDMI switch, then an HDMI into the receiver, with the PS3 i get good sound in dolby digital 5.1 with spider man blu ray, but i cant get it to play in TruHD sound? i get about 10 listening options with the ONkyo but TruHD isnt one of them? am i supposed to be able to get all the listening options since im using an HDMI cable? the PS3 is set to bitstream and Onkyo is set to do HDMI audio out?

also when playing video games the receiver switched to Multichannel listening mode, dolby digital 5.1 isnt even an option, still sounds good, just wondering

like i mentioned my sound system sounds pretty good the way it is, just need some enlightening as to what i can be doing wrong so i can get the most out of my home theater..thanks

im not familiar with the spiderman dvd but i'm assuming it has TrueHD? if so, make sure you are playing the TrueHD track from the actual DVD. should be in the settings/option menu on the dvd. if thats not the case i will keep looking around for some answers..

I thought the Toshiba and the PS3 can't output True HD uncompressed over HDMI? That is probably what is causing the issue, the PS3 downconverts the true-hd to something else

The A20 should, with the latest firmware. that was my understanding as well. it wouldnt make sense to make a HDDVD player that can decode TrueHD but not allow it to pass over HDMI because it doesnt have analog outputs either. so if not over HDMI wouldn't that make it impossible to achieve?

The A2 can decode TrueHD, but it will pass to the 605 (or any reciever/pre-amp) as multi channel audio over the HDMI connection (LPCM). It makes no difference whether the player decodes it, or 605. It is the same soundtack.

In order for the 605 to decode "TrueHD" you need a player that can output bitstream over HDMI, and I believe right now, only the XA2 and one of the Samsungs can do this, as it requires HDMI 1.3 on the player. No firmware update will change this on the A2.

What I think is happening is the player is decoding TrueHD but is not passing it to the Onkyo that way.

I'd try looking thru the menus of the A20 and see if there is any choice for audio output. Also on my Onkyo TX-SR702 there is a way to "force" the receiver into decoding one format. Does the 605 have such settings in the menu?
