XBox 360 problem

My son's 360 ate his Orange Box (Half-Life?) disc this afternoon.

Anyone else have a 360 that's begun eating discs?

Is there anything I can do to fix it?

It should be lying horizontally on a surface rather than vertically. The system doesn't eat games unless it gets bumped around (usually on accident).

I'm on my 4th XBox. The first 3 gave me the red ring of death and they were lying horizontally. This one I figured i'd try something different and it's sitting vertically. So far this is the longest i've had a trouble-free 360.

I don't know if vertical causes eating disc's (because i've never had that particular issue) but I do know that so far i've been trouble-free with it running vertically.

Mine ran fine for many months vertical, and then 1 day out of the blue decided to start eating my discs. Unfortunately, it happens...

I have the same problem, except mine has three red lights and one unlit light... found what to do too... give it a proper funeral :(

Actually, you can send it in for repairs. Or you can try something different by sending it to LLama, let them repair it and include a sick case mod, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion sherardp, but its already out of warranty, and I'm in the Philippines so the shipping costs to have it repaired abroad would be impractical. I kept searching and there might be some hope afterall... this might be worth a try...

Manilaboy, have you tried contacting MS about the issue? In the US they cover shipping both ways, they may do the same for you.

They extended the warrantee to 3 years I believe, but I don't know if that's world wide. Best of luck!

demi, actually the 360 was designed to sit vettically ( i was told by xbox techs). the reason being it doesnt get sufficient airflow sitting horizontally. so it may be more unstable in vertical position but much much less likely to over heat.which i have had 2 die on me from overheating and i have had my 3rd sitting vertical and no problems frank do you have a 1st generation? if so i know they had problems just eating discs.

That may work for overheating, but that has nothing to do with gouging marks in discs. I've been told over and over again to lay the thing horizontally and leave it there. I happen to also have mine elevated so that airflow is around all 4 sides of the system. I have one of the original systems and haven't had a single problem with mine. Considering all of the problems people here have claimed to have, I would say I am either extremely lucky, or i'm doing something right. :)

Besides, Microsoft wouldn't put pads on 2 ends of the machine if they weren't designed to sit either way. Just turns out one way is better than the other. ;)

I have had two 360's sitting horizontal for two years now with no issues. There are no doubt some quality issues with the 360 but they can be helped out by giving it plenty of breathing room and not moving it much :)

My tenth 360 (not exaggerating) arrived today. This is the first one that has had the added GPU heatpipe, so maybe it will last longer than the others have.

Of course, I'm only assuming it isn't DOA. I haven't gotten around to hooking it up to check yet.

You definitely are extremely lucky. MS wouldn't put aside $1 Billion if there customers simply weren't "doing things right".

No you can go ahead and explain, I will listen. The bottom line is that the build quality might hold the crown for one of the most poorly built consumer electronic device ever created.

All of my consoles have been in well ventilated areas and rarely moved, in fact the last few I would use compressed air to clean it out monthly. The biggest problem is in their "repair center" because it seems as though they just slap them together before throwing them out the door.

DVD drives fail, they won't read discs or in some cases such as the OP's case they damage discs (without the console being moved) the mainboard overheats and gives you the RROD. One of my consoles lasted 2 weeks, the one to replace that lasted 10 minutes. No matter which way you cut it that is completely unacceptable and cannot be due to user fault.
