Best bet is to go directly from the iPod headphone jack to one of the inputs on the receiver via a Y cable splitter...1-Mini Plug/2-RCA Plugs. NOT necessarily the one pictured here...but this is an example:

shack's got it. They can be had at most stores and cost as little as a few dollars to Monster's $30.

I've gotten best sound out using Apple's cables (Marware also makes excellent ones) prices similar (cheaper than Monster). I've never been able to find good quality standard mini plug/RCA cables (most come with miserable insulation)
Couple other notes:
* You need to turn the sound on your iPod way up...
* Some docks only work with Apple/Marware type cables (be sure to get correct type for your dock, others only work with mini plug/RCA type. Be sure to check your docks' manual.
*Lastly, you didn't mention what model iPod you have - I understand the latest version (Classic) uses a different dock, and video out has changed to component. Don't know if this affects functioning or cabling of audio.

Or, if possible, get one of the docking cradles that has RCA outputs on it. A little more expensive but I've heard from various people that they sound better coming off that plug versus the 1/8" (or smaller) jack. I don't know since I don't own one so, YMMV.
