View Full Version : And the replacements are...
KLH 9912 , 3 way floor standing speakers and
KLH asw10-100 powered sub-woofer.
Lets be quite frank here, while being on a 300 dollar budget, its rather difficult to cover the frequency range while still obtaining decent quality thats feasable. Any hopes of capturing the same sound of the 2000s for this price are obsurd to say the least.
Now I must go off and conduct my listening tests and report back to the bretheren. Thus far Im actually quite pleased with their sound... lets see how they handle Loreena McKennit , Eminem, and Linkin Park.

Just my .02 but if you have a 300 dollar budget, why not look at used?
If you want new, look at a pair of B&W 303's...you can pick them up for around 200 a pair.
I'm just saying, for 300 bones, you can come up with some better speaks than KLH. Quality over quantity.

Troy,
I gave those speakers some thought, also had my eyes on some used Polk and Infinity.
Here is my current logic at the moment. I have extreme high standards for quality, and low end -used- B&W, Polk, Infinity just dont cut it for me. If I have expectations of decent sound then I become incredibly intolerant of every flaw.
At the moment, I have been looking for a speaker with a robust build, able to handle a lot of power and cover a wide frequency. They arent accurate, and quality - hah lets not go there. These are your basic powerhouse loudspeakers- Come with a 5 year warrenty. Things that I can use and abuse and not really give a shit if something on them blows.
My next upgrade with audio will include the top dogs..... going to go ALL OUT, but that may be a few years away.

Just in case you haven't made up your mind HERE (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-YaF4RToryPJ/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=107RT25IB) is a nice deal on one of the best bookshelf Polk has made. Buy Har's sub for sale at the flea market and you have a sweet music setup fop $300. This speaker got a very good reveiw from Stereophile HERE (http://www.stereophile.com/printarchives.cgi?417) .
If I had a $300 budget this is how I'd spend it.

I'm with shack, I just think for 300, you could do SO much more than KLH. Shoot, the possibilities are damn near endless.

Peace Out~:D
Sounds good, but one problem:
Anyone know where I can get some good speaker stands for one hell of a low price? LOL! Dont need to be any larger then 16 inches

FAAK man, I'm willing to bet you could pick up a pair of RT55's for 200 or less, A pair of decent Sanus stands can be had for under a C note.
C'mon, man, do some homework!

How about HERE (http://www.electroshops.com/pop/sabf.htm). $50 no tax and no shipping and they will look good down the road when you put those LSi9s on them.
Russ,
Im a strange fellow - If I cant have the best I will settle for the worst.! haha
Troy,
Believe it or not I have been doing research and havent come up with anything appitizing yet. Im doing some more tests with the KLH, suprisingly enough they are performing decently well.
Shack, 50 bucks? shiet... thats a lot of dough... I saw that site not long ago, good deals.... one of the better Ive found thus far, but Im still searchin for better. haha
Im very interested in your suggestions though boys, havent led me wrong yet. :)
I could have gotten ya some B&W 602's for $300 shipped. :)
EDIT:
Phuz,
I got dibs... :) :)!!!! I may be returning the KLH rig tonight or tomorrow....
Its alright but I dont think its something I could bear for years and years...

Ok. They're down the street at a pawn shop. They might be a little more than $300 shipped, but not much. If you are serious let me know and I'll get a solid quote.
They are in great shape other than the tweets have a small dent in each one (finger sized). if I didn't have so much other stuff to get I'd get em myself.
I am actually quite serious - However- the dents in the tweets concern the hell out of me. Especially not knowing if they are in good working condition or not.
I know with polk speakers getting any dent out is piece of cake - but Im not sure about the B&Ws.
I am truely interested though. B&W vs KLH, uhh no brainer. LOL!
Shack,
Yeah man thats exactly what Im lookin for! Did I ever tell ya, your mah heeeroooo. hahah :) Thanks bud !

I've heard them and they still sound good, and I think you could fix the tweets with some double sided tape or some really sticky tape. Honstly I don't think the dents in the tweets make much of a difference in sound.
I'll stop by after work and get some pics and detailed info for ya.
Thanks Phuz,
Your going above and beyond whats necessary, and I really do thank you for this.
I am indeed incredibly interested in these speakers. I figure a vacume could easily take care of the dent problem.
Looking foward to the pics and details man! :)
Z
I couldn't get the pics, but they are in good shape other than the tweet issue, one small nick on a corner, and the rubber that the grill goes into is pushed in a little (these can be pulled out and re-insterted to fix)
They are asking $350, but I've managed to talk them down to $300. So you would have to pay $300 plush shipping. Sorry, but you might want to look into some other stuff. It's a good deal, but still a bit costly and over your budget.
I'm about to go back after doing some research on a Rotel amp that they have, I'll try to get pics then if you are still interested.

Oh sure, I see how it is. I mention B&W and 'pfffft' nothing.....Phuz mentions Beemers and 'Well, OK, I have to think about it'
EFF it, I'm leaving the forum..............
OK, I'm back.........
If the 602's don't pan out, look at the 303's. They will surprise the hell out of you. Another pair to look at that I demoed recently is the Paradigm Atom v.3's and they were just reviewed in Stereophile (that's why I went and checked them out). I think the dubyahs are better but for under 200, they are hard to beat.

Peace Out~:D
Phuz,
Thanks for checking up for me, unfortunately it looks like I will have to pass for now..... akk! Thanks though, I really do appreciate it! ;)
$150.00 USD for the 303's. Im VERY interested......... Need to find a place that sells this speaker, know of any websites? (Im bein lazy heh)
Sure thing man. I'll try to talk them down some more when/if I get the amp. If anything comes of it I'll let you know. Sorry to get your hopes up but there are many many other good options out there that have already been posted.
Don't forget the PSB's that steve mentioned. I've heard em, and they'll give the beemers a run for the money any day.

I don't think you will be able to find a website for B&W that sells below MSRP. They are as tight as Rotel and some of the others when it comes to internet sales. The local B&M shop here will not budge off of MSRP unless it is a big order and then only 10% or so. They are firm on $300 for the 303s.
