Anyone ever get tired of the rack of components and speakers in the normal setup? Ever look for something different? Ever find it?
Just thinking out loud. Used to be you had your little portable record player sitting there on the table. Then you had a big console with am/fm radio and record player, then you had your all in one unit with two speakers, now you have your rack full of 19" components. What could be next? (Other than digital flying around the house through a home/computer jukebox type system).

Hang your components from the ceiling. That would be very different.

Big monitors on tall Polkstands is the wave of the future.

Hmm.... I have some 40" tall SDAs I suppose I could put on 20" or 30" stands... What do you think? :D
In all seriousness, I would love to see a speaker manufacturer (maybe Polk, maybe not) put out a line of retro big speakers. Make it a limited edition deal, one production run only, top of the line components, advertise "there's no need for a subwoofer when you buy these babies!" I dunno if it would turn a profit, but if the marketing was done right it could create a nice publicity splash...

Micro chips implanted directly into our brains. Left hemisphere for mono. Left and right hemispheres for 2 channel stereo. :)
Holodecks could provide a whole new level in HT. Just immerse yourself into the action.

I'll hold you to that! I want to see this....
Touch pads, in wall speakers, with a pc based music server hidden out of the way. Oh wait, it's already here. :D

There was dust all over my lens, but here goes:
First picture shows it mid construction, you can see all the hospital grade, surge protected outlets and the mother of all wall plates; the rest show the final product (well, almost final- eventually I stained it).

I think FACE has it pegged and use will expand. The above concept would be better suited for saving space and is now being used in some systems. The equipment is tucked away, except for the speakers. In-wall speaker technolgy/sound has some room for improvement.

UNC, you have put a lot of work into your equipment rack, and I was curious as to the advantage of suspending the equipment versus having the component rack sit on the floor. Is system vibration reduced, or is this more for aesthetics? Thanks for the pictures.

Well, I was completely re-doing the room and figured why not? It did wonders for the turntable vibration isolation from people walking around in the room, bass feedback, etc. However, the turntable was hanging from the floor joists right below my roommate's bed- That worked out exactly how you're imagining.

I dont think those Audioquest feet would solve that level of vibration. Thanks and enjoy your holidays.:D

Hmmmmmmmmmm....................................... ............
Lets see new stuff...............Random Thoughts///////////
OK, you are sitting in front of your display.........a commercial (of course they are still around) comes on an your room is filled with the smell of piping hot pizza the way you like it (the commercial is for you afterall) and your favorite beer or other beverage, you push a button on your remote and wala a few minutes later your dream pizza girl is standing at your door in a candy striper outfit.....................
While slopping your pizza and getting the sauce everywhere the next commercial pops up......its a music commericial.........you have never seen this...........you push your trusty remote button and suddenly your room is filled with the actual virtual musicians from the band, you punch play and Freddie Mercury asks you Play What???
You say We are the Champions, the band picks up their actual virtual instrument and belts the tune out like you never have imagined leaving you completely breathless the hairs on your neck standing straight up, Freddi asks anything else Sir????
Of Course all of this is brought to you by Monster Cable..........well bummer.

PC audio is definitely fun and different.
What about the return of the minisystem? Remember those crappy Aiwa systems everyone had in the 90's?
There are some that sound OK, but they look like ghetto blasters reborn. Sure, we have the Trivoli and such, but the minisystem is totally low end right now, would be nice to see that come about. (and I don't mean mini separates). Maybe more people would get back into music.

My new type of system was the iPod rig....I don't even have a CD player hooked up....everything is iPod....kind of sad but it works great and doesn't take up much room. :D
No storing or changing vinyl, no storing or changing CD's, perfect for my lazy ass. :D

*sigh* I thought I was being a little different buy building a rig JUST to use for my iPod. This isn't a premade iPod rig, this isn't a rig WITH an iPod and other media sources. Yes, I have a CD player sitting there, no, it isn't hooked up and probably won't be for a long while.
Maybe I could take my rig and hang it from the ceiling upside down? Would that be new enough for you?
And ppppleeeassseee don't tell my parents, the think my entire iPod rig cost me $400 :D Not to mention I have about $900ish in books I need for this last semester.
Cathy shhh! Russ I know you have my address! Shh! And I know some of you others do too!

Computer Automated Virtual Entities or CAVE's are pretty close, so I think my listening cave will be one of those..............BL I did not mean you should hang yourself from the ceiling.
What if you did not need the rack at all................straight from the venue to the cave.........no more Sony bolony........as suggested an implant, hard wired, of course wire matters...........nothing new there.
What if at birth you have a chip implanted with all known music of mankind? You simple bang your head on the wall to activate it and then think of the song you want, or just do random shuffle of a certain genre type, You can get an upgrade if you like every so often just using biometrics.
I would need tubes though, it would be cool if they stuck out my ears.
Nevermind, I hear you thinking where I could stick that tube.

A new type of system?
A system with no speakers
You just sit there - listen, and then go... what now?
Haha, I made a funny

Yes. I picked up a 1971 Kenwood stereo and it's currently paired with a pair of RTi6 with a SACD and record player connected. I would love to hook up my LSi9's so I may get a separate amp since the stereo has preouts but that means heading back down the road of racks. I'm thinking about looking for a pair of high sensitivity 8ohm speakers to replace the RTi6. Dunno. Just looking for a simple setup in my home office.
Great question.
What could be next? (Other than digital flying around the house through a home/computer jukebox type system).
madmax
Probably powered speakers with built in card reader and a remote so you can slap in a 500 gigabyte Compact Flash card with all your music on it. The playlist will need to be displayed on the remote though.
