Whats up people?
I got a pretty bad head cold on Thursday night and every day it seems to be getting worse. It started out with just a slight sneezing thing then to a leaky nose. Now I have a consistent headache running nose and I'm tired as hell.
I also have cold hands and cold feet but on the urge of sweating everywhere else. It's like a Virus. I don't get sick often but when I do , I GET IT!!!!

Sucks,

Dan

I am one who normally does not get sick and I have had this same type of cold on and off since the middle of November! All I have left is a dry hack I just can't shake!

My wife and son have the exact same thing. Although it's hit my wife a little harder because now it is down in her chest as well. She smokes so that doesn't help. After talking to the doctor he said it was indeed viral and no anti biotic would help and that she has to let it run its course.

I on the other hand have chapped hands from washing them so much as well as I've been walk around with a bottle of alcohol and constantly wiping down door knobs, refridgerator handles, microwave hands, etc etc etc. So far I have no symptoms and my wife caught it full blast last Wednesday. . . so I may be off the hook.

Give yourself a fast walk around in that cold mid PA air and then take a hot shower, you will be amazed how much better you feel.

Oh btw, the doctor said, two advil (200 mg) then two hours later two Tylenol (500 mg)throughout the day and the usual plenty of fluids.

I hope you feel better soon.

My daughter got some nasty big this weekend and is flat on her back sick.

I'm really hoping I don't get it, since I'm the only one at work right now that does what I do, and I doubt my partner would like to come back from his vacation over that.

Mine started about 2 weeks ago today and got really bad right before Christmas. But, the weekend before I felt better which was good because I went out of town. Then, last mid-week, it hit me hard again but I actually feel pretty good today. The part I hate MOST is that my ears have been stopped up so all stereo listening doesn't sound worth a shit! My right ear is more clogged now so I keep thinking something is wrong with everything I'm listening to. But, that's just it....it's on everything I listen to!

That's what I hate most about the head/chest cold crap. Harder to enjoy music....but, I still try.

NyQuil at night and Afrin during the day has been working for me.

I'm been doing NyQuil, Theraflu, Advil, Vitamins, Cold-EZ (only when no fever is present).

My main problem is I cannot sleep. Oh I am very tired, it's just that I need a V-PAP machineto sleep. I have sleep apnea. If my nose is clogged up then I cant use my breathing machine and I cannot sleep.

If I sleep without it I run the risk of vomitting during sleeping. And when you breath it in it is not fun at all. So I am not sleeping.

Been sick (off and on) since early November. It is, indeed, going around.

Everyone in my family has been hit by it. Usually starts with a tickle in the back of the throat, then goes into full on sore throat, light headed thing. A few people developed sniffles too.

Two weeks and it goes away, right? Wrong. This little bug hangs around.

2 weeks after you think its gone it comes back - same symptoms.

Went away and came back again. Went to see the doc. Said the mucus / post nasal drip is the problem.

Over the counter stuff (Dr.'s advice) - Mucinex, Ocean Nasal Spray), Nyquil, Dayquil, and FLUIDS are what it took (for me) to knock it out for good.

Hope you feel better soon Dan :)

NyQuil is the nectar of the Gods !!

Sleep ..... ah, sleep ........ wonderful sleep ........ zzzzzzz....... zzzzzzzz....

Lasareath, without trying to sound like Benny Hinn ("Cast them crutches aside, and walk !"), you might try the Nyquil routine without the Apnea breatholator (or whatever they call it).
Of course, I'm no doctor, but I was in the Navy six years (more familiar with gynecological problems).

I have the same thing. Head cold, sinus pressure, runny nose, constant drainage, etc. It really screws up listening to the rig because my ears are so plugged. I had the same thing around Thanksgiving and it's back. I've had the current cold since X-mas Eve and it just won't go away completely even with anti-biotics (it's much better with medicine).

I hardly ever get sick but when I do it seems to linger for awhile. Haven't had a good listening session for quite some time, not to mention my taste and smell are altered to the point where sometimes food doesn't even sound good.

Being sick just plain sucks and I'm about done with it!!!!!!

Damn -- you guys are effed up!

Since I became a vegetarian almost 20 years ago, colds have been very mild and infrequent (1x/year), with a typical duration of three days. I'm only mentioning this as a potential long term solution -- not necessarily to encourage vegetarianism, but adopting a healthier diet can help alleviate health problems, including colds and flu.

A couple of other "remedies" -- at the first sign of a cold, use several dropper fulls per day of echinacea/golden seal tincture. You can find it at any health food store. Keep your body temperature as warm as possible. Also, take at least 10,000 milligrams of a high quality Vitamin C.

Is that 10K per day?

I usually do around 1500mg every couple of hours.

I boost the vitamin c as well and about 10K a day is what I do when sickness is coming on. I take the Ester C, not the regular C- it seems to work better.

Cool.

The best Vitamin C on the market right now is Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C. It ain't cheap, but it's based on some kind of nanotechnology. It's good because it's almost 100% bioavailable, which means nearly all of it gets absorbed into your bloodstream as opposed to a typical capsule or tablet where a tiny fraction of the active ingredients are actually absorbed. Google it.

I drink Orange juice freshly squeezed. One glass in the moring. I usually don't get sick. Maybe once every 2 years and this is my year.

Troy ,
Don't worry I called out of work today for that very reason. I need not only cut my finger off but drop a 50 inch plasma on myself.

A glass of OJ has very little Vitamin C. It's best to use supplements daily.

I would trade your bad cold for my situation, I've been living on a matress for the past 3 weeks. 3rd time this yr my herniated disks have come back. I was in the TV room on Xmas day while everyone celibrated on another floor. I can't walk more than 5-10 mins, I can't sit for more than 5. I've had my 4th Spinal injection this year. Tonight we will celibrate with me on the air matress on the floor watching movies...and becuse of the meds I take I can't enjoy a drink. I am not trying to one up you colds but just be thankful that's all you have....gotta go lie down...as the pain is starting..

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is a joke. Disregard it if you value your health.

Take as much C as you can -- like 10,000 mg/day or more, if you can afford it.

Vitamin C functions more as a hormone than a vitamin and is very effective in high dosages. Don't worry - there's no side effects.

When I was a kid and had a cold, my father used to give me a southern remedy -- a hit of mint gin and it really helped with the coughing. I found out later in life that some cough medicines have a high alcohol content.

Typical human absorbtion of Vitamin c is between 200 and 500mg a day. Too much Vitamin C can reduce copper levels in the body (another essential nutrient). It can also increase iron absorbtion (dangerous for some people, even resulting in iron poisoning). Pregnant mothers can give their babies 'rebound scurvy' by taking too much during pregnancy. Too much vitamin c can cause larger insulin spikes in diabetics and people with hypoglycemia.

No side effects?

Well I've been taking my vitamins consistently, rubbing alcohol on every door knob, handle, soap pumps, remotes, telephones etc, obsessivly wash my hands so much that they are chapped. . . and after all of that, I'm catching my wife's cold (the doc thinks she may have the flu) as I am achey as hell, my nose is itchy and I'm sneezing and I am getting some signal from down below indicating some brewage!!!

I am going to try to think positively to keep the stress away and maybe I can bounce this one out of my system before it really takes hold.

I forgot to mention that I've been drinking about 3 gallons of water a day along with vitamin C enriched juices.

It just goes to show that all it takes in one of those little viral bitches to get past the goalie and you are f#cked.

Get your learn on. Start by reading this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1401069630/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I29HFAADT43IWJ&colid=3ALDHEM2LTMUK

Keep in mind that most of what you read in the mass media about supplements, herbal products, homeopathy, and any form of "medicine" that does not require a doctor's prescription will be met with skepticism by the medical profession for obvious reasons.

To move beyond the BS, you gotta roll up your sleeves and examine the scientific literature, particularly the most recent research studies that have been conducted on the use of Vitamin C in high doses. Not surprisingly, it will provide you with an entirely different perspective.

Well what vitamin C did for me this time is to keep the cold off of me for six days since the onset of my wife's cold.

I'm definitely feeling it tonight, slight sinus headache, itchy nose, a sneeze here and there and an occasional bout of body aches but who knows I may have built up my immune system enough that tomorrow I wake up asymptomatic.

I did get my 'learn' on, and thumb through some medical journals. I'm not saying a little extra C won't do good, but too much, for the wrong people, is plain wrong - AND it's documented.

How do you feel about mercury poisoning? ;)

The first symptom I had was laryngitis three days ago but that passed. Now I have the headache, sinus congestion, runny nose, and I'm itchy. It's a bummer cause I can't take any cold meds except for Humibid because of the other meds I take so I have to deal with the sinus congestion.

Glad you're feeling better mantis. I went to the doc yesterday for an earache and turns out I have a real nasty infection goin on. I can't sleep because of the discomfort. Got me on some double antibiotics. I hate takin any kind of medication but not much of an option in clearing this thing up. Playin' my RTi's and system at a very low level @ 4:15AM now. Even with an ear infection the tunes and the system still sound sweet. If I'm gunna hurt I may as well enjoy it. ;)
