Vinyl Storage

After an endless search for a cheap vinyl storage solution and searching through Polk and Audiokarma I came across a partial picture of a rack sold at Lowe's that someone was using for vinyl. Decided to go check it out and found that you can also put casters on these racks, a huge plus if the rack is full of vinyl and very heavy to move. The box says the shelves are rated for 350 pound each but I have no desire to test that and don't believe it anyway. It is more than sturdy enough though for rows of albums.

The total for me came to about ~$73($55 for the rack, $14 for the casters) and it works perfect. Right now I have my TT and preamp on the top 2 racks but eventually those will be off when I dump my Salamander rack for something else. Here are the pics if anyone is interested....the shelves are fully adjustable and I figured by leaving the poles tall at the top it makes for another shelf to put vinyl on when it gets to that point. I have more vinyl than this but this just gives you an idea.

For a cost effective solution, I would suggest the Expedit (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50103086) series form Ikea. Each of these will hold about 800 LPs.

Great suggestion, I'm willing to bet this will hold about 800 at the end as well but can also be rolled around and is also cheaper.

The albums are staying on this rack....when I get rid of my Salamander, I'm moving the turntable and phono preamp to a new rack.

Yes Darla....you could ride this cart around your house....down the street...to the mailbox, etc. The wheels are actually pretty good quality, I'll be holding onto this rack for a while.

Now I finally can go through my mom's old albums and pull out what i want. So far I found the Village People - Cruisin....absolutely hilarious album

Quick update, 180 albums on one shelf and it's not full yet. So this rack should hold 800 in the end.

Nice I might have to go to Lowes this weekend. My vinyl collection is growing. Just today one of my coworkers gave me a crate of about 100 albums including the dark side of the moon which is in excellent shape.

Did you change out the detachable power cord and interconnects? That may improve the sound quality.

That's exactly what I use, I have both the 8 shelf and 16 shelf in black - both just about full.

Not to burst your bubble there little brother but you need to place something flat, like a slat of wood or glass, over top of those wire shelves, they will leave indentations on the bottom edges of your LPs.

There is cardboard under them already. :)

You can just barely see it under the 2nd shelf in the picture, but the bottom shelf has it as well now.

Looking at the link provided for the Ikea rack, it states that the shelves are only rated to hold 15 lbs. Russ, have you had no sagging problems with yours? It is a nice looking rack.

Just keep in mind that each lp weighs about .5 pounds.

I'm in the Ikea Expedit camp...that's just a pretty cool piece and will work well in my living room. Plus, for what it doesn't fill up in LP's, I can put some other decor things in. I've seen pictures of different peoples Expedit racks holding quite a few LP's on each shelf and have been for a couple years or so. Hopefully that means they are good for the long haul.

If I could just figure out how to make it hold about 800+ CD's as well....

Just thought I'd do a quick update. So I did some modifications to the rack today, since my dad is a master plumbing and I've been doing it since I was 14 I figure some pipe hangers would be used well to add a bar across the side and the back so the albums cannot slide out. It ended up working out awesome, and as you can see from the pictures the albums are pushed all the way to the bar and they are still near the front of the rack.

I got just enough material to do 1 shelf, but I'm happy with the results so I will do the other 3 as my vinyl collection grows.

I have these same shelves, Got them from a restaurant distributer. Don't know if I saved much $ if any. Use them in my pantry.

I suggest doing yourself a favor and put 12x12 panels on the ends. They can sit there like the end record is currently. The end records should be fully supported to the top or they will eventually warp.

That's what those Striesand albums are for, 2 or 3 at the end of every shelf.

The Firestone Christmas albums works well too.

You can use anything that is stiff enough not to flex in the middle where it lies against the rod.
