My father is looking into a new set of headphones he is looking at the Grado 220's and a set of sennhisers. Which would be better.

Which set of Sennheiser is he looking at?
Neither one is 'better', they're just different. Grado in general has a more forward sound than the Senns...

Grado makes some excellent headphones...but they have alway been very uncomfortable when worn for any length of time (like 30 min.) to the point of becoming almost unbearable. Sens have never had comfort issues for me and are Grados equal for the most part.
Of course this is IMO and YMMV.

Buy the yellow pads for the Grado's and they become much more comfortable!

I own the Sennheiser HD-595, Grado SR-225 and AKG K701. I love all three and they're all very good headphones, each giving a slightly different presentation of the music. Which one I use usually comes down to my mood.
To answer which is "better", it really depends on how much he's willing to spend and what his preferences are (both in music and presentation). Also, amplification is a factor in how well a headphone will sound.
Any more info you can give us?
