TMZ has learned that Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams. He was set to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman film "The Dark Knight."

Story developing...

drugs. . . I don't know. He didn't seem like the OD type. Maybe suicide?

Maybe Batman killed him?!?

Probably a little to early to tell, or to joke about. Tragic, though. Talented actor for sure.

I'm in shock. Ledger was my favorite actor, outside of Hopkins. I actually likened him to my generation's (young) Marlon Brando. Unbelievable. Just serves as a reminder that anyone can check out at any given time.

I certainly feel bad for his family, but I have no sympathy for those that choose to take their own lives if that is the case. It is the most selfish act any person could do and quite frankly, it is the easy way out when the chips are down.

At least once per month if not more, the Long Island Railroad will come to a halt because someone chose the easy way and walked in front of the train. I’m willing to bet that some of these folks had it a lot worse than this schmuck.

No, a classless act is one who chooses to take their own life without regard to family (especially children), friends, working obligations, etc… As for tough guy…that not me at all. Insensitive comment, perhaps but I have seen first hand the result of someone close choosing this route and to this day it pisses me off.

Even a drug OD... you'd think by 28 you'd be smarter than that. Especially with kids. Unless he was forced to do what he did, it was a selfish act.

Damn shame, I liked him enough. Saying he was this generations Brando ... well I won't get nasty but I'll just say no way. But still, a decent enough actor, such a waste.

Most people who take their own lives suffer from some sort of severe psychological disorder. To call them "selfish" is very inappropriate. Moreover, to not sympathize with someone with a tremendous mental health problem... Be careful about casting the first stone.

It'll be released. As much as this sucks, and despite not needing it, this is huge press for The Dark Knight.

We went through all of this with Brandon Lee & The Crow.

I think a lot of actors can't handle success very well. I personally would be overwhelmed if were to be put in the position of star status. It would take a very strong person to handle all the fortune and fame. I know actors and musicians have a much higher suicide rates if this is what happened?

There was actually a great interview with Dave Grohl in Maxim last month that brought up this very thing (though in relation to Britney I think, not something like this)

"The kids now who are experiencing fame, money, paparazzi - they need to get their asses out of the nightclubs and have a barbecue with their fucking family once a week. It's not rocket science."

Booo frickin hooo. Who cares. I've no sympathy. If this guy killed himself because he though his life sucked or he was depressed, then I could give a rat's butt.

"I cant' handle all this success and attention. Please stop handing me money for wearing your designer clothes. No girls, my nuts are tired I can't have sex with you anymore. Please call my assistant, she'll schedule you all in next week between my afternoon massages and midday martinis. No Sir, it's not a film about gay relationships its about the relationship between two people who have fallen victim to a forbidden love. And besides, you're not gay unless you give a reach around . . . "

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told the Times.

"I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

He said he took two Ambien pills, which only worked for an hour, the paper said.
Anyone who's taken Ambien will tell you, he has a problem. If I took two Ambiens(assuming he was prescribed the maximum dose), I would sleep for a minimum of 12-14 hours. It wouldn't surprise me if it was a accidental suicide. But, one that could have been easily avoided.

Because this person is a movie star, I'm suppose to care that his life ended!?! I don't think so. What makes his death any more important than the other X number of people that died today? Nothing, absolutely nothing!

KrazyMofo24

People care cuz he's familiar. Just like you care when someone you met a few times died, same thing. I don't think anyone's broken up about it but it's worth mentioning because you watch someone a few times in some movies and there's a familiarity.

After finding out it was Abien he was takeing I think it is more likely an accident. Abien is a VERY addictive and a VERY powerful drug. I am sure there are a ton of articles about it on the net. I was taking it for a while but had to quit taking it. It was to strong. One pill and I would get a good 10 hours of sleep. But I would feel bad the entire next day. Not to mention memory loss and the crazy things you do while on it. If I took it a little too early sometime I would walk around the house like a zombie and do stuff and have no idea the next day what I did. The point is if one pill was letting him get one hour of sleep than he has probably been abusing them to build up that kind of tolerence. So accidental or not it is still a shame. He should have know better.

It was an accidental over dose not deliberate. He was sick, & wanted relief. He didn't stop to think that the number of pills he was taking & the combination of all of them together might have an adverse reaction or might kill him, he justed wanted to get some sleep.

bobman1235

I love how, from an autopsy alone, they think they know whether it was accidental or not. Unless they have the guy from Pushing Daisies working with them, we'll never know if he knew what he was doing would kill him.

Though statistically, when a younger male kills himself, it's in a violent way (ie, gun, not pills).

I think they can tell quite a lot from the various toxicolgy reports. For instance they can probably tell if the pills were taken in relative small doses over a period of time or if they were taken in one large batch. One would be more indicative of suicide than the other. Assumptions yes...but still reasoned and justified assumptions.
