I currently have a non HDMI 1.3 capable receiver (Pioneer VSX-72TXV) and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. I realize that with my Pioneer I can't take advantage of the new DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio formats. My question is if I decide to buy a high definition player will I be stuck with PCM audio or will I still be able to listen to good ol DTS and DD at the current bit rate.

sorry about the premature post. I got some good information on the HDMI 1.3 post below. If anyone as anything else to add that would be great.

pcm basically = lossless. depends on your hd dvd or blu-ray player's capability. most all are capable of pcm. pcm sounds the same as true-hd when i use my ps3. pcm is uncompressed. think of dobly trueHD as a 'zipped file'. when decoded, it becomes pcm, uncompressed.

Just to clarify. Players can access the plain 'ol DD tracks still included as backup on many hi-def disks as well as the DTS 'core' of DTS-HD MA tracks via the same connections as DVD players (optical, analog outs, etc.). And because the DD and DTS tracks are encoded at the maximum bitrates of the old standards (instead of the middle rates found on most DVDs), they will often sound better than those available on regular DVDs.
