View Full Version : Four Surrounds
11-26-2002, 10:10 AM
I am building a house and I currently own a pair of RT16's I bought 4 years ago and love. I'm looking to install four surround speakers, two on the sides walls and two in the rear in my new living room (about 15' across front and rear x 18' on the sides). Should all four surrounds be the same? Should they be bipole/dipoles or direct?
Thanks for the opinion,

Bipoles/Dipoles for the surround (side), and Direct firing for the rear channels will give you a great soundstage and imaging for not only movies, but for multichannel music as well.

Not really but they should be timbre matched.

I agree with Frank Z on this.

i like bipoles for rears.. whether they are rear or surrounds. before i was using direct firing surrounds in my 5.1 system. it was to direct.. and felt like i was missing quite of bit of the rear sound.
went with fx300i's for rears.. and suddenly everything opened up. all timbre matched i's. it's a beautiful thing with all your speakers use the same tweets.

Can I get bipoles and directs that are timbre matched?

i believe as long as the drivers are the same. yeah they should be timbre matched.

Aboslutely. Check out the main Polk site and find "System Builder" in the "Toolbox" and you can find what speakers match.

Try sending an email to customer service and asking which of the current Bi/Dipole & direct firing speakers would be a good match for your RT16's. Here's the email address
It's more than just drivers, tweeters will have a greater impact.

The RT16's sport a trilam tweet that will match pretty well with the RTi's.
I found that my RT7's (well RUSS's RT7's) mated well with the newer RTi series.
