So I was falling asleep in my chair and I had just changed the channel to the middle of the astonaut farmer...

it was the quiet part where he just got hurt from his first launch... So Im sleeping then all of a sudden I wake up to an earthquake and shat myself then realize there was a rocket taking off in my living room.

I am definitely having a problem finding a good setting for my sub. Sometimes I dont feel like it is loud enough, then other times it's like real rumbly... I almost thought I was going to blow my speaker tonight when I got woken up, it just sounded like distorted base, granted it was a rocket launching, but I am almost tempted to rent the movie to keep playing that track over and over and see at what level it goes distorted...

Thing is, I didnt have the audio that loud. -20 on the avr is about as loud as I put it. That's where it was at. -15 is too loud to even listen to, -30 is comfortable soft. and +16 is as loud as it goes, just to give you some examples., so at the max setting I listen to most movies at the base is pretty tight.. Im just frustrated that in this movie it went distorted. I dont feel like i should have to adjust the sub all the time...should be like ronko... set it and forget it... any ideas..

I see the problem. You're getting base when you actually want bass. :D

TV is too unpredictable with volume levels between stations and commercials....for this reason I end up just leaving my subwoofer off other than when I watch a movie that I know won't be changing volumes on me.

Maybe the sub doesn't have a flat frequency response,

I had one Cambridge sub like that , some stuff was OK some was very loud and clear and some was just distorted, the second Cambridge sub I had was OK (they were the same models go figure), I actually still have them.

When you have it set perfectly and you get something with lots of base, just consider it freebase.

Seriously, it is hard to find a perfect level. Especially off a TV type feed. Heck, I even find myself needing to adjust levels for some CD's versus others.

You will never ever ever ever ever ever ever find the same bass levels on different movies, music or media.

Its their fault, not yours. Even in the same movie the levels can vary. Just keep the remote close by.

I don't use a sub and never will. Subs are overrated. The amount of bass I get out of my speakers is just fine.

Some of the LFE effects in movies really are too much for many subs and gobs of distorted bass, bottoming and general distress are pretty commonplace. Of course, some subs can handle it, that's why it's there. About the only thing you can do is calibrate the sub flat to the mains and play at reasonable volume.

Absolutly.

The cheaper the sub and the worse the calibration is, the more problems you will have, when levels are concerned.

Thanks for the responses.. thought it was something I set up poorly..
as for my typo... it was 1:16am and I was stoned on codein cough syrup.. boy tough crowd..

Not really sure what the crossover would have to do with the sub having too much bass or distorted bass, thought that had to do with seamlessness from the speakers...
if it cant handle the low of the low???

as for cross over, I am using the LFE and just let the system figure that out.. I think it sets it at 80 thx??? sound right..short of adjusting as per needed any other thought?
