Okie Dokie ... been away and/or busy for a few weeks, but now that I'm back, I'm wondering what the current wisdom is concerning LCD TVs. I've seen some of the Magnavox stuff at Costco and some Samsung refurbished models on Amazon as well as a few others. We really want something in the 40 to 46" range (bigger will be just too big for our living room).

I've been concentrating on Samsung or Philips for over $1,000 (but under $1,500) and checking for deals on secondary brands such as Magnavox or others for under $1,000. I've tried reading up a bit on AVS but it seems more confusing than informative for the most part. Any ideas on the subject anyone?

Polaroid actually makes some NICE 40"+ LCD tv's and are usually cheaper than the rest.

The Polaroid I had lasted me for a little under a year before I ever had to call customer support. They were very nice and knowledgeable.

Also, unlike some brands (samsung *cough*) they actually get you started with HD by giving you a set of Component cables in the box!
All in all I really like Polaroid for TVs, even though they haven't been making televisions for very long.

I recently bought a 40", to me the 46" didn't look that much bigger when compared side by side with the 40".

My plan was to buy a cheaper brand until I made the mistake of looking at them side by side and noticed how much better the sony looks. Ignorance is bliss because I ended up spending about 500.00 more than what I origonally planned. To me the xbr sony has the best picture hands down but I don't watch enough tv to justify the cost so I bought the bravia model below it.

I was told that there are only a couple different lcd screens and it is the actual processers that makes the difference. I believe this because my friend that has a samsung said his picture is great until you watch fast action and then the display gets pixelated and everything loses detail, I guess its because the processor can't keep up?? He also has an old school 50" tv, I think its about 7 years old, for sports he thinks the picture has beter detail. Thats sad for the samsung that is suposed to be 1080p.

Stick to Sony or Samsung if you can. The better 40" models can be found on sales for around $1200-$1300 and will look better than the other brands IMO.

When it comes to sports and action, put out the money for a 120hz LCD or Plasma (or DLP).

If you watch a lot of either of those types of shows/movies, you definately wanna spend a little more on that feature.

Also be sure to look at LED LCD's also.

Entry level samsung 4061 of 4661 are very nice sets

Samsung xx65 series is even better and price are lower than many months ago.

Stay with samsung if you can, better lcd panels than Sony and a lower price. Dont buy philips or other brand of lcd if you can. They are cheap but not good quality.

I could explain why if you want, I've had many technical formation with sony and samsung.
