I've got a 705 refurb right now, haven't had a chance to run calibration yet but I like the sound. The problem is I'm getting static and I'm pretty sure it's the receiver. I'm going to try a few more things but don't have a ton of time or my wife's patience to mess with it. I'm thinking about just switching to the Yamaha RX-V663BL. My 705 is within the return limits and it's damaged as far as I can tell (get another or this)?

I think I would go with something else! I have the 805 but with the lip synch issues and the heat I am currently in the middle of a=switching to the Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH! I am going to use it as my pre and I am currently searching for a nice amp! As this seems like the way to go!

When do you get static and how much? Do you get static when you plan an FM station or is it regardless of input source? Does it become louder when you increase volume?

Is there a source or time when you don't have static - is it in both speakers, all 5 if you have surround?

You'll have to do some deduction to find out if you have a real problem or something else.

Let us know.

Thanks, I've introduced a bunch of new variables all at once (wasn't initial plan). I decided hey I'm getting a new receiver let's go to HDMI cables for the Cable TV so that meant a new cable box and new cables (from monoprice). Then my old receiver broke when I was first hooking up my speakers (also new). So I got a new receiver (refurbed) and got new Coaxial, Toslink cables. The only thing constant from my setup before are the TV, DVD player and Belkin Pure AV surge protector. I never had static before, I notice sometimes the sound gets muddy on CDs, and sometimes I do get clicks or fuzzy sound (all my pre-listening modes are set). I've now done the calibration and still there. The static from watching the TV and using the receiver is a little different than the noise from the CD player. I've tried changing the cable coaxial out, it was making a noise when I bent it but still hear the static with the new cable. I'd like to spend some more time tearing it apart and troubleshooting but after searching for everything and doing the initial setup my wife is fed up with me spending time on this. I think my best bet is probably just to return it and go with the Yamaha. It will at least remove the refurb variable from the equation.

Also, I tried cleaning my coaxial outlet to make sure there was no dust and also tried RCA cables and that was actually worse on the DVD player.

It sounds pretty clean for movies, but at certain points I can hear almost a static or fuzz. With the FM I can't really tell if the noise isn't present because the reception is so bad.

Oh and it appears to be coming from all speakers, so I guess I can rule those out. Must be the inputs or the receiver. I've got all new cable wiring from Monoprice as well and all connections are solid. I'm going to try component cables on my new cable box when the wife wakes up from her nap. Still won't fix the CD player though. It will tell me if at least one source is clean or not. I was even considering changing out the cable box if the other cables don't fix it. Next time I'll make sure I don't upgrade everything at one time (except for stuff that breaks in the transition of course....what are the odds).

Thanks, oh and one the 805 issues I don't have any overheating or sync issues with the 705. If it were not for the static and sometimes muddy CD playback I'd be very happy with it. I'm giving up the THX certification with the Yammy but gaining Burr Brown DACs. Also losing 5 watts but getting a new receiver. All the same HD formats are present in both, oh and 1 less HDMI 1 but 2 is enough for me anyway.

I think I may have solved the static when watching TV. Removed the HDMI cable from the cable to the TV and used component. Also, moved the toslink from the TV directly from the cable box. So far so good, also tried my PS2 for music vs. the DVD player but still no dice, even when using toslink. So I've tried, coaxial, RCA, and toslink and the CD's still have static.

Personally bro, I'd take it back and exchange it for the Yamaha. Sounds to me the problem is in the receiver since you've tried different sources and the problem still exists. THX certification means squat IMO. Just some BS standard used for marketing is my take on it. I don't mean to sound biased or subjective (since I own a Yammy) but Yamaha is known for quality on some of their receivers. Also, I don't think +or- 5 watts will make much of a difference. Some folks claim the Yamaha's sound bright but all in all it comes down to preference. Maybe at least give it a listen but if I were you I'd definitely return the Onkyo for something else. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck

I pre-ordered the Yamaha from JR for a great price. It's about $40 cheaper than my refurb 705 and the only real difference is the one less HDMI which I don't need and could get a splitter later. I think I'll call Onkyo for a RA# today. I'm pretty sure it's the receiver too, and have done most of the checking I could.

Also, when I auditioned the Rtis they were hooked up to a Yamaha and I thought the sound was great. I've also seen the comments about them being bright but I guess I like the detail.

I'm running a pair of RTi6's on a 2 channel Yamaha RX-797. Nice detail and balance. I couldn't be more pleased. Take that extra 40.00 and put it towards some IC's or speaker cable. ;)

Yeah I think the receiver will be better, after running the calibration it sounds very good with the Onkyo but interrupted now and then of course with the static. That's the main concern, just listing the price difference for reference.

It's just been released and looks to be a bargain, I considered HK as well but the lack of HD audio in my desired price range was the issue.
