I have an opportunity to pickup some Plats,,so,, these are the ones that came from the woodshed @ Ted's. I'll be asking only what I paid,,which was 895.00 IIRC. If interested please pm me. These will be for pickup only. These are the originals I believe,, with the 2 30 inch ribbions. Thanks for looking. George
EDIT: These need to stay in the family if anyway possible.
They are for sale now,, I'm picking up the Platinums on Sat,so I'll leave these here until then.
Thanks for looking. :)
Price recuced to 800.00

I'm currently running Polk SDA SRS 2's. Can anyone tell me how the Carver's compare with these for detail and sound stage. I'm driving my Polks with a Carver amp rated at 675watts per channel and a Carver preamp, using an Oppo 980h for my source. Would this be an upgrade or more of a lateral move? Thanks.
ohskigod
03-24-2008, 04:29 PM
they will be more open and airy, which is good if done right (basically they will disapear in the room a little better than the SDA's) these will be MUCH mroe dependent on placement than your SDA's though. sounds like you got more than enough power (what carver amp is that? Carver Pro?)
those Carvers are 4 ohm I believe, so if your running amps bridged, you would reconsider that on these. this is a speaker every full blooded audio nut has to try to truly be an audio nut. cant be described is words what they can do if set up right.
bryanj
03-24-2008, 04:53 PM
Thanks for the response ohskigod. I am running a Carver A-760x. It runs 675 per channel in 4 ohm.
TroyD
03-24-2008, 05:08 PM
I'd say you bring enough amp to the table.
The Amazings do not through the sounstage width that the SDA's do. The Carvers are more detailed, soundstage depth, good one I'd say that's a push. Overall, I'd give the nod to the Amazings being better all around IF (and these are big if's) you have enough amp to drive them and some room for them to breathe.
DAMN good price.

the bass response on these is well Amazing, four 12" woofers per speaker, they go subsonic, add that to the space and detail the ribbons deliver and you end up with a speaker that might be your last. The placement of instruments across the stage is awesome as well as the depth, for 895.00 its a true no brainer.

Unless its Bose I am not going to knock anybody's speaker.
These Carvers are speakers you should definetly own, they are outstanding and require very little maintenance, you want to keep them out of a humid environment and supply them with nice clean current. I owned this pair and before me Troy, they were soncially perfect, at some point folks redo the surrounds on the woofers but this set was not lacking in the bass department.
You can spend five to ten times what these cost and not do as well, they are really that good.

But I thought these are flat panel speakers. Do they user woofers? Are the surrounds foam or rubber?
And pardon me for asking, if they are so good, why did you part with them?

Ted,, aquired the Platinum edition,, George is aquiring the Platinum Edition on Saturday,,they have a 60 inch ribbon and have a lesser impedence dip than the originals(2 thirty inch ribbons). Hope this helps. :)

03-26-2008, 03:36 PM
Don't the ribbons or the panels need to be serviced periodically?
No. Most are over 25 years old and work flawlessly. They are sensitive to high humidity, but that's not a problem in most houses and you just need to reduce the humidity to solve that problem.
skipf
03-26-2008, 03:40 PM
But I thought these are flat panel speakers. Do they user woofers? Are the surrounds foam or rubber?
They are flat panels, but not electrostatic. Each speaker has four 12" woofers w/ foam surrounds. Replacement woofers that match the original specs are still available for $35 ea. plus shipping. You can also still get the ribbons re-built with original kaptons.

I'm all set for man-sized speakers right now, but I'm curious as to how sensitive these are to room placement. Best way to situate them? Always wondered that with the unique design.
amulford
03-28-2008, 10:38 AM
Extremely sensitive. They must have clean power and room to breathe.
I had an identical pair for about 3 years and they are "Amazing". They're not as power hungry as most believe. I ran them on a Dynaco ST70 and it had no problems driving them clean and hard. I did however notice my Krells at 100wpc didn't do quite as well.
Nice speakers and someone should grab them up. Great price btw.
If you remove the felt off the rear of the ribbons it really opens up the room to nice filling highs. Very smooth.

Engtaz.....great purchase. I have a set of Platinums and their sound is breathtaking! Very open. I was worried about placement and the only place I had for them was upstairs in the loft. My A-framed sloped ceiling as well as placing the backs of the speakers toward the railing seems to have worked out perfectly......I guess I lucked out but this placement allowed them to be away from the side walls and gave them 30 feet of open space behind them. Made them sound beautiful...lots of breathing space!! I power mine with a Lightstar Reference 2.0 amp. ENJOY!!!
