Favorite 180g-200g Pressings

What is everyone's favorite heavyweight vinyl pressings?

I have yet to buy any heavy vinyl. What is the logic behind them? Do they actually sound better or just last longer?

Heavy pressings usually, but not always, sound better. As far as favorites, that's a tough question because the availability is variable. Usually they are limited pressings. Some of the best I've heard were from a discontinued AudioQuest line of high quality 180g pressings. There are more out there than you can fathom though.

I have lots. I can't say which are my favorites but I do like the Classic Record 200gm, Rhino records 180gm, MFSL, and there are some indie labels that do heavy pressings.

They tend to sound better for four reasons that I know of; 1. heavier is better where dampening stylus energy & airborne vibrations; 2. they use "high performance" vinyl, which pretty much equates to virgin or pure vinyl; 3. the vinyl is left is the press longer thus giving it the proper time to cool evenly thus no snap, crackle & pop; 4. they usually produce a limited amount thus the press doesn't wear out.

One problem with the Classic Records releases is that they stopped using groove guard and thus have a tendency to warp. None of mine have warped but that is a complaint I've read about. From what I understand they've remedied that problem.

I'm sure there are other pluses. One more thing some, not all, are remastered by guys like Steve Hoffman.

I've yet to buy one that didn't sound quiet. I do have one that sounds like a bootleg from video off a cell phone but the music is great so I enjoy the quiet and the music and am less critical of the image and so forth.

It is very quite and sounds very good. The high end is a bit rolled off in this recording on both the vinyl and the CD. I like the music though and SDA's totally disappear when you are listening to it. Gone.
It sounds like your wall(s) are the speaker, and yet you can pin point instruments and hear the separation and layers of the vocals.

MFSL's recording of AKUS "So Long, So Wrong". Sonic bliss, and one of the best recordings I've ever heard. Their pressings of DSOM, Crusaders "Chain Reaction", Aimee Mann's "Bachelor", Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors", George Benson's "Breezin" and AKUS "Live" are good too. Most of the Capitol Japan pressings are excellent also. 180G is where it's at.

My two favorites are probably Alison Krauss "Live" from MFSL and "Disraeli Gears" by Cream ( Japanese pressing). They both sound as good as or better than any other music format I own.

i've only got a few 180 gram vinyl pressings. I like the sound a lot, but the price can be up there to high though. I got Eric Clapton 4 album set on 180g recently.. it's good stuff. covers his entire career.

i read that the Neil Young 180g set is incredible too. that'll prob be my next purchase.

For most other vinyl, i usually just try and find a sealed copy from the original pressing when I can. i would never want all my albums on 180g or 200g, it would be hella expensive and most will never be pressed again.

I am waiting for Fleetwood Mac - Rumours to come out on 180g virgin vinyl . but there is some kind of delay i understand.
