I know, a horse that has been beaten. Lately I've been pretty bored with the sound of my system--not bad, just blah. I decided to mess with placement a little by moving the speakers back about 3" (27" to the front baffles) towards the rear wall. Pay dirt. Just that little change. More impact, more slam, the music is back. This even helped the speakers sonically disappear into the room more. I suspect that tightening all my drivers a couple weeks ago was the culprit to the change in tonal character.
If your system is sounding a little too ordinary, mess with speaker placement--it really is the best free tweak out there.

I have found the following speaker placement equation works best for me:
If (((A+B+C+D) > 0) AND (E>6)) Then "All is good"
A = distance from wall
B= distance from side wall
C= distance between speakers
D= speaker angle in degrees to center of my head
E= Number of beers I have consumed

I think Steve was way past the "E" factor.

Sorry Steve, the 1st rule in "Recovery" is, ADMITTING you have a problem!
You're just trying to go 'cold turkey' on us. It'll never work, MUAHAHAHAHA!!!

I failed Algebra. But I passed BASIC computer language.
10 Turn up volume
20 IF volume is not loud enough THEN GOTO 10 ELSE 30
30 Drink Beer
40 GOTO 10
50 END Program

I know what you mean, Steve. A couple of weeks ago I moved the right speaker over a couple of inches and had to listen to all of favorite CDs again because some of the subtle nuances change. It may not sound "better," but it's definitely different and I enjoyed it. Then a week later I added subs in between each speaker and the audio rack. The presence of the cabinets alone altered the sound, so my frame of reference for my reference music changed again. It's amazing how you can manipulate the sound in such simple ways.

This a very true method Steve. I've tried it with my old RTA-11's and it did wonders at the time. I've finally gotten my 1C's in the best position and they aren't moving. It took some tweaking but they sound great.

Tonight I decided to moved my speakers outwards a few inches and it changed the sound of things. Then I decided to toe them in a little, wow. They're imaging so well it's hard to believe there's no center channel there.

good deal Steve, when I move them myself I also give them a hug, a kiss and a little hump, just so they know I still love them.

Ditto on your discovery. As my CS2s breakin I have had to readjust their room placement several times.

You get so caught up in upgrades, cables, ect, sometimes you forget the basics. I didn't realize how close together my speakers were--thinking they were 8ft, the tape measure revealed they were actually about 6.5' apart. Last night I increased them to 8' with my listening chair at almost 11'. The combination of closer wall placement and wider seperation really made a big difference.

i have recently been a big believer in speaker placement. If mine are a little out of wack the whole thing sounds like hell. If the wife moves them for dusting i can tell right away.
