found a pair of sansui sp-200 locally for pretty cheap. why do i keep buying these old azz speakers? i love the cabinetry on these old things. i am trying to think of reasons not to buy them, and figured i would let you all tear them apart for a few posts, lol.

Reminds me of the Realistic Nova's and Pioneer 88's. The lattice work grill are a classic touch. I think they're a great buy and I firmly believe the 1970's will return. At least I hope they do. I lost a lot of stuff back then, mostly brain cells, and I'd like another chance to find them.:D

i think i actually DO have an iron butterfly 8 track. yes, i am serious. have a whole box of them, and a panasonic quad set-up, complete with "thrusters". IIRC, that moniker is even trademarked. hey, there are lots of patents filled with suck.

also, i do have at least one black light tube.

but all i have for reverb is digital. wont that ruin everything?

yes, i am letting these slide, EVEN THOUGH i no longer have the realistic mach I's or the criterions with the ribbon tweeters, or even the series I 501's that LITERALLY got eaten by mice in my storage shed. like i said, i dunno why i keep buying these old azz speakers.

I have a pair of SP3500s that a friend gave to me. I too love the look. Although they are far from great speakers I don't think they are nearly as bad as some people believe.

I have to agree the cabinetry was pretty cool back in the day. I love those grills.

I like them much more than the Pioneer CS series from the same time period. They typically are a bit bass shy but have a nice overall sound.

And BTW, Cubdog is correct here. I can remember hearing thoae Sansuis in the Audio shops back in the day and they were very competative with the American products selling at same price point. Later, I had a Sansui 9500 that was a tremendous receiver too. If you could find a set with good surounds and no problems, they would make a great set of garage speakers.

Large Advents? Way over-rated IMO but everyone hears things differently. Speaker sound is not as black and white as that.

heh, surrounds were good, but ive got plenty of garage speakers. my... uh... utility room has this pile of relics in the corner, including the garbage-found mitsubishi DS-251 mkII (an interestingly "classic" sounding sealed design). additionally, there are three other pairs of speaks in the closet to the left. yes, the craftsman battery charger is plugged in, lol.

i have much love for the receiver on the second shelf, a lafayette LR-5555A. my pop bought it brand new in 1973 or '4. i also have the matching turntable, but the belt is fried (halfway down a long list of "i need to's"). this platter is a cheap yamaha YP-B2 that i have had for many many years.
no worries; polk is represented, if only by a lowly pair of monitor 4.6. gotta love switching for 3 sets of speakers. that is osibisa woyaya on the top. highly recommend osibisa to those who havent heard them.

heh, i am a maven of mediocrity. i am and have come from the working class. unfortunately, given my chosen interests, that isnt terribly likely to change.

truly, i think that having lots of set-ups to compare with gives a better representation of what your "A" system can do. also, since i do a lot of recording and mixing in my modest (mediocre?) home studio, having several sets of speakers to listen to really helps me in getting my mixes to translate well (or at least, better). as you well know, they (the speakers) all sound different.

i could not begin to tell you how much duct tape i have used in my lifetime.

I had a pair of those, with a old technics reciever and a tape deck....cant remember what kind, but it was the old console type where the loading and the controls were on the top of the unit.

that was my first "system" for the most part.

better part of 24 years ago by my count...I was in frikkin grammar school!
