View Full Version : Affordable Hdmi Receivers?

I haven't been keeping up on this and I am wondering what are the receiver offerings now that will do HDMI audio PCM or even the new HD surround formats. Are there any reasonably priced ones out there?

I got my Onkyo 805 for $650 from Amazon, you could probably find a 605 for less the $400.

+1 on the Onkyo. Wife's friend asked me for recommendations & it's hard to beat.

Onkyo TX-SR605 has 2 in/1 out on HDMI with upconversion if that interests you. They can be had pretty reasonable right now since the 606's are coming down the pike pretty soon and have 4 in/1 out I believe.

Yamaha 663 can be had for under $400 as well. Stacks up well against the Onk 605 some would say it has the edge. Haven't seen much on the Onk 606 yet but would think they have stepped it up or why release it. So if your not in a hurry it should be looked at.

Hmmmm. So what would you guys say to a 605 paired up with a Hsu Ventriloquist system for a budget set up?

I also need a receiver, I have an Outlaw 950 pre/pro and it lacks HDMI and I want to access these lossless tracks with my PS3. I just don't want to spend a lot because I eventually want a pre/pro but there too darn expensive right now so a receiver will have to do.

Wing - Just an FYI, you have to step up to the onk 705 to get pre-outs..... Might be worth the price increase for that alone (over the 605). It would be for me anyway.

Good luck and definately share what you end up getting and what your impressions are when it comes in.

I am actually thinking about trying a Yamaha RX-V663.

Has HDMi (only 2 inputs though),
Will send all inputs via HDMi - including the on screen display(composite and component only go at 480p, but via HDMI)
has pre-outs for all channels (and 2 for the sub)
can be had new for about $350.

I am sure the amp is not that great in it, but since it has pre-outs, I have that side of the house well in hand... May be worth at least trying out.

Nothing to worry about with refurbs. I read somewhere that they have a lower return rate. I bought all my Onkyo direct from Onkyo. The only problem I had was with the CDP and they swapped it out with another. Very good cust service. You need to join Club Onkyo to get the $299 price. Original price was $364, not bad savings for 10 minutes of time.

Just joined up, $299 is a good deal and it comes with a 1 year parts / labor warranty. The only bummer, no pre-outs, I run all seperate amps. I'd have to step up to the 705 and that's $499. I may go with the 605 and just use that for a year or two until I can find a pre/pro for a decent price.

McLoki, the pre-outs is what did it for me. Also 4 ohm rated (for the front mains only) will decode True Hd, DTS master audio and DTS HD Audio. Pure Direct for 2 ch. and believe it or not the amp does not sound all that bad for
<$400. I have a B-stock Emo LPA1 heading my way, so for $399 + $399 I think I have probably scored my best audio deal of my life.

wingnut It sounds like you are looking for this to use as a pre-pro for a short time (maybe I misunderstood) but I don't think that Pioneer has pre-outs either. Haven't heard the onks but a lot of happy people with them, I always kind of liked the sound from the older Pioneer's, this is my first Yamaha, and so far very pleased. (+) No HDMI hand shake or compatibility issues, no heat issues, (-) the remote is kind of lame IMO, the manual will leave you shaking your head and re-reading, for some the fact that 1080 component in can only be passed component out is an issue but did not effect me.

Ron-P
04-21-2008, 03:49 PM
I think I'm going to order up one of the refurb 605s and give it a go. I don't want to spend an additional $200 for just pre-outs with the 705 as it's a short term investment until dedicated pre/pros drop in price.

unc2701
04-21-2008, 04:25 PM
Also 4 ohm rated (for the front mains only)

4 ohm with a grain of salt. My LSi25's shut down my 4 ohm rated RX-V2200 at moderate volumes, so don't expect too much.
...bu that's what the pre-outs are for :D

I understand your feelings on the wait time Ron. Here in Hawaii free ground shipping isn't an option. I always have to pay extra for Fedex or UPS and sometimes it can be expensive. 2nd day service is the cheapest option available to us.

I thought about paying the almost additional $50 but it'd only shave off a few days so it's not worth it. It's due to ship tomorrow so I'll have an update then.

I really am looking forward to this. My HD-A1 had pre-outs so I was able to listen to a few TrueHD tracks on some of my HD-DVDs, the difference is amazing. Having this will allow me full access to all lossless tracks on Blu. Very exciting.

Note that with the 10% off sale at Shop Onkyo that Danny mentioned, the net delivered cost of the factory refurb 705 would be about $439(with the $10 credit for registering for "Club Onkyo")and the 805 about $619. As a bonus, I left home around 5 and went to Disneyland, the UPS faciltiy is only a couple blocks away. While there I got a cup of coffee, walked around, and bought my second Tink figurine for the theater...

Those you can find anywhere online, besides, it's sitting on the coffee table while I demo all the gear in the theater. I'm going to revamp it all; the PS3, Onkyo 705, 2 Monster HTS-2500's, 6 Adcom amps and a 250 watt plate amp for the sub. Lots of gear to clean and relocate. It'll be a few days before the rig is up and running again.

On top of that, I'm taking off all the doors to the screenwall so the gear is exposed and visable. I'll have some cleaning and fabric work to do to the framework as well.
