All,
I am looking into these two, right now leaning towards Tilt (HTC 8250) over iPhone because of QWERTY, 3G, and GPS features. Anyone use Tilt? reliability?
TIA

Ha! Doubtful.
This is the problem with Apple fans, not only do they think their product is the best, which is fine, but they insist that everyone thinks exactly like them, and everyone who doesn't is dumb or stubborn for not loving their product.
Sometimes people just want something else.

I've seen and tried enough iPhone, and I do like it. However, the GPS feature of most smartphones today is also a consideration. I was hoping that iPhone next gen is ready to be rolled out along with 3G, but it appears at this point, it might not happen till end of the year. I can get the Tilt for $150 refurb/$300 new compared to $400 of iPhone. Currently I am using the Nokia Communicator 9500 and has been pretty content other than its weight and size.
The Tilt has MS Mobile, which I am sure it's like using mini Vista version. Apple iPhone software is about 10x more user friendly (as always).
Decision, decision...

Tilt is very bulky (as compared to iPhone and other phones in the category) and doesn't have full web browser and GPS nav software off the shelf (you have to buy these separately).

So, decided that the price is too good to pass, I went with Tilt and wait for iPhone to include GPS and 3G in the future.
Izafar, I read that the Tilt can use Google GPS map for free. So, we'll see in a couple of days when I get mine.
Btw, I've been using Nokia 9500 and soon Tilt. Bulkiness is what I am used to..:)
But, the nice thing about these bulky phones, it allows me to leave my laptop at home, when I have to make a day trip up north (which I do a lot).

I have the tilt. We use them at work. The GPS software sucks, and you have to purchase it separately. For a PDA it's great, but for a phone, it's terrible. Voice quality is bad, and usually it locks up every 2 o 3 days and you have to boot it thanks to Microsoft. Also the keybd is awkward to use if your hands are larger.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your honest feedback, Paul. I guess I have 30 days to test drive it and see if I like it. I thought GPS through Google Map works and it's free?
How about internet speed over 3G?

1st of there is no problem other then you making it one. There is a reason Apple fans love there apple stuff, it works exactly the way it is suppost to. Can't say that about Microsoft products and is the reason I switched to Apple.
The Iphone IMHO is the best phone on the market. It does everything I want it to do and alot more.
Saying WE want everyone to think like us is FALSE. I could care less what you or anyone else uses. I like everything I own thats Apple made, you need not own anything but what you like.

I feel stupid because all I need/want my phone to do is store phone numbers and call people. I have no desire to type/text and could care less for doing anything internet related on a 1.5 inch screen. I'm not even 30 yet but feel like an ol' timer when it comes to phones.

texting is wonderful, for me. It allows me to tell people that I don't really want to talk to, to text me....:)
How many times did you feel compelled to call someone because that person call you and left you a message on your VM? texting allows me to let him know, got your message, thanks. done. I don't owe you a call. It's just me?

In all honesty, I would definitely give the iPhone a 9 out of 10 for its cool factor, and I'll get one when it's ready for those features that I care.

The IMHO part is important.... I'm glad you love your phone. I love my iPod, and yes I own one. I don't, like MANY of your compatriots (maybe not you, it wasn't meant to be a universal thing), think everyone who bought a different MP3 player is a dummy, or that the iPod is the greatest and only thing that will ever be able to play MP3s.
Saying WE want everyone to think like us is FALSE. I could care less what you or anyone else uses. I like everything I own thats Apple made, you need not own anything but what you like.
Maybe it's false for you, but again, listen objectively to some of the other Apple fans out there, they're obnoxious fanboys who say asinine things like "the iPhone makes all other phones obsolete".

Objectively is fine. Form your own opnion leave well enough alone. The Iphone is the coolest phone I have seen and owned. I love it so much. Real Internet is insane not the cell phone way, the computer way. Thats way cool. Not to mention really useful when your out and about and need info.
Let the fanboys talk, it's easy not to listen. I will back them up on Apples products are top notch, that still doesn't mean anyone else should buy them unless they feel those products are right for them.
I also love Dynaudio and feel they are the very best speakers in the world. From the bottom of the line to the extreme high end, they are what proven themselves to me to do both jobs both music and movies to my standards. They are the longest owned speakers I have had in the past 10 years. I still plan on owning them for along time.
You can call me a Dynaudio fanboy but I don't care. You also have the choice to buy your speakers of choice.
So go enjoy your cell phone and I'll enjoy mine. I think Polkatese should have got the iphone but he choose to go another route for his reasons. I still respect him.

If I don't want to talk to someone, I don't talk to them, period. :D
I could see texting being useful if I was in college sitting in lectures for hours everyday as you could send/receive relevant information without disturbing others in class. However, I'm old and have a good job where I can do as I damn well please. If it was important enough for me to text, I'd just as soon call.
I dunno... beyond the college thing the whole concept just doesn't seem to be useful to me. I guess if you are in situations where you can't actually talk it makes alot of sense. I'm just not really ever in that situation so it's not useful for me.

The speed over 3g is fast. I live in Upstate NY by Albany, and when I can pick up 3g it's quick. As for Google and gps, it's ok. You get what you pay for. We use the application that came with the phone. Telenav. We track our time and service calls through it, and some guys use the gps for directions. TOM TOM makes a card and has software for the for around $100. That is MUCH better, but my company didn't want to buy 15 copies.

Also texting is ok once you get used to the keybd. It's not a bad phone, just overhyped.
Also one thing to note is there is no headphone jack for playing mp3's. You have to get the usb to 1/8th jack adapter.
Just trying to help.

Just wondering if you've considered the Blackjack II? Got one a few weeks ago and really like it. Suppose the screen is a little small, but it has great resolution and allows you to edit office docs.

Dan, you raise a few good points, but I still agree with Bob conceptually.
Maybe it doesn't apply to you or people that you know, but what he is saying IS true. The same can be said of fanboys of many products, but it does seem to be quite a bit worse with Apple fans. PS3 fanboys are almost as bad.
You probably don't see it as much, but trust me it IS there. This is coming from someone who owns both an Apple product AND a PS3, so it's a fairly objective point of view.
My Blackberry RULZ, anyone else who things something else is better is obviously an idiot :D

ok help me understand. Apple products are great at what they are suppost 2 do.people rave about them and that's fine. Honestly its refreshing to see things work correctly. The ps3 is an incredible source.its still the best blu ray player and not to mention the very fastest loading/start up by a long shot. It like apple does everything its suppost to do very well.people dig that including me. No one is forcing anyone to own any of these products. Yousaid u own them 2. So I'm not really getting the point.

That's what I was trying to say I guess, that you're not getting the point. Yes they work great, noone including Bob is disputing that. However on many of the forums that I visit (it's not quite as bad here with Apple, but check out some of the XBOX and PS3 threads, especially around the time that HD DVD was sinking) the endless constant raving of people who own their products gets a little tired.
Apple products are the best, there's nothing better, and you suck if you don't own their stuff. The first part I'm good with, the second is taking it a bit far, and the third is where the line is often crossed IMO. The fanaticism is taken to a near religious level with many people, it's like the Jahova's Witness standing at your door telling you you're going to burn in hell if you don't convert, except that everywhere you go, restaraunts, cofee shops, etc - there's a hundred more of them telling you the same thing...

This line of arguing reminds of an old movie quote. Something along the lines of:
I don't have a God complex... I AM God.
bobman1235
04-24-2008, 01:59 PM
It's Alec Baldwin from the movie Malice (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107497/) :
I have an M.D. from Harvard, I am board certified in cardio-thoracic medicine and trauma surgery, I have been awarded citations from seven different medical boards in New England, and I am never, ever sick at sea. So I ask you; when someone goes into that chapel and they fall on their knees and they pray to God that their wife doesn't miscarry or that their daughter doesn't bleed to death or that their mother doesn't suffer acute neural trama from postoperative shock, who do you think they're praying to? Now, go ahead and read your Bible, _Dennis_, and you go to your church, and, with any luck, you might win the annual raffle, but if you're looking for God, he was in operating room number two on November 17, and he doesn't like to be second guessed. You ask me if I have a God complex. Let me tell you something: I am God.

So, I just picked up a tilt today after some low life swiped my POS nokia just-a-phone. The browser seems to work OK, the GPS was dead on for the drive home but the sound quality, although better than the old nokia, is still kinda weak. It's such a hastle trying to understand some long winded conversation in a noisy place.
All I really want is a phone with superior sound quality like my 30 year old Bell Telephone kitchen land phone. Does anyone make such a phone??????

This is my quick impressions of the Tilt, after 4 days of activation:
Added 4GB of Micro SDHC card
Internet speed: Very fast on 3G, fast on EDGE
Push Mail feature: works great with Yahoo Email, Verizon personal, and Corporate Exchange Server
Internet Messaging: Good
GPS: Google Maps is very close to spot on, and it's free
Keyboard: Adequate for my tiny fingers
ActiveSync: Downloaded MS Mobile Device Center, works out of the box and able to sync every contacts I have on my personal Outlook
Music: Good and comparable to iPod sound quality
Video on Demand: Good
Bluetooth: Works as advertised, can have a maximum of 6 BT devices. Work with my BT Handsfree in my car
Applications: MS Mobile Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (come standard with the unit), work as advertised. IE is ok, will check out Opera Mobile as an alternative.
Overall Impressions: Pretty stoked and impressed of this mini laptop that can make calls.

Greetings from humid and hotter than the hinges of the doors of hell kuwait.
I like my tilt, I got from the US, and yeah, I did pay good duckies for it, and yes, some software I can not use, but I tell you what, I have downloaded some freeware gps, and it works fine, let's face it, when you are going from point be to point oh hell where am I now, you must have a gps, and I have used mine and as I said before it does work well. I had a bit of a problem with the extreme sunglare that we get in these neck of the sands.....So, I got me a screen glare protector and it is cool now, I can see clearly...!!! Done and Dusted. I like it when I go to meetings and the Imates, and the Iphone's dudes look at me working on word mobile and using my keyboard, they go wot the BLEEEEEP!!?? But hey, to each its own, whatever gets the sand off your boots. WIFI works daboMB!! Plays my music very nice, and I can also use my finger to move from screen to screen....
Cheers
