SDA-1A Loud Beeping Noise

I am the proud new owner of a pair of mint SDA-1A's and a new member to this site - good site it is.
My problem is that these speakers didn't come with a interconnect cable so just to test that the SDA system is working I jammed some wires into the jacks making sure the the same wire went to both large blade sockets and the same thing with the smaller socket jacks. I know this is crude but I just wanted to make sure the system is working before fitting new sockets and making a new cable.
All went well for a couple of minutes then all of a sudden a very loud beeping sound was coming out of the speakers, I then quickly switched off the amplifier and am now waiting for some feedback on what would cause this. The amplifier I am using is a VTL Stereo 90. Before I go I must mention that after this happened I pull out the wires to the interconnect sockets and play the speakers as normal. The speakers played flawlessly, no probems at all.

:eek: Take a look at any of these schematics pertaining to the blade/blade models ( Yours included ) , and tell yourself you did a bad bad thing. http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55888

With the blade/blade shorted out , you gave your amps protection circuits a really good workout...and hopefully didnt ( Although I dont see how it didnt ) fry crossover components.


Edit...I read same wire going to both large blades...If in fact you were actually blade to blade in a pin to pin configuration ignore my post....unless they somehow accidentally shorted after your " Couple of minutes "

if your speakers use the blade/blade cable.. polk still has them in stock. not much money either. just get one and don't eff up those speakers

As you all know the 1-A's use the blade /blade plug/socket interconnect arrangement. The interconnect cable is like any other cable, that is the large and small blades are commonly connected respectfully eg large blade is connected to the corresponding large blade at the other end. I made sure that this connection arrangement was carried out when I temporary connected the wires. The inverted signal is carried out internally as per xover schematic.

Correct, the "swap" is done with the inside wiring coming from the blade/blade to the crossover. The actual IC cable is straight blade-to-blade. The problem must have been caused by a short, or by a non-common ground amp.
