View Full Version : Chicken grease on my CD's?

OK,
So most of my CD's and DVD's are pristine. I do have a few "Favorites" which have finger print residue as bad as pizza or chicken grease on them that have since been sitting in the dusty house or on the floor of the Blazer. How do I clean them? They are beyond blowing off with compressed air. I'm thinking a warm bath of water with a little bit of dish washing liquid, wipe with wet cotton towel, rinse and then air dry. Any suggestions? I sure would hate to use the wrong procedure and cause additional harm to them. I should have thought about it before letting them get this way but you know how it goes...
Thanks!

Dawn and warm water would be a good thing, as long as you don't then get all ambitious and try to use a Scotch Scrubbing Pad to clean them. :D
Whatever you use, don't use ANY sort of oily cleaner as that'll burn the hell out of your cd or dvd player......

CDs are made of polycarbonate, which is also used for spectacle lenses. Use spectacle cleaner and a soft cotton or microfiber cloth that has not been washed with fabric softener, as that will cause smearing. Same way you would clean your glasses.

I remember laughing at this thread title back in 2002.
6 years of Club Polk later, being the more educated "audiophile" that I am now, I know that some greases and oils can act as a CD "enhancer" improving the optical clarity of the surface and reducing jitter. Instead of chicken grease I like to use a light coating of German Castrol 10W-30. Just don't put it around the center "hub" of the disc. I learned this the hard way. I'm sure Chuck figured it out years ago.

A Stoner product called Invisible Glass will remove all oils including human oils. This will give the CD an OEM finish. If not, follow the advice above if you are skeptical.

I use steel wool and a little Briwax to clean them. Then I sell them on eBay.
