View Full Version : What Classic Car Would You Drive ($5k-$10k range)

I'm always a little surprised when I see what look like pretty decent cars on craigslist for not a lot of money but then it disappoints me that I don't see that many on the road. Sure they're all gonna need a little work and take up a space in the garage and then there's the WAF (Willing Accomplice Factor) to consider. I've got mine already but thank goodness I don't have any more room for more than one. Otherwise I might end up with 5 or 10.

Just wondering what everyone would buy if they could. Remember that on many models for $5K-$10K, you may not get much except a rusty non-running project car.

No rules, discuss anything you want about classic cars, post pics, post CL ads, questions, how to's, project progress, etc.

1. 1966 Chevrolet Impala / 2dr / 327 with A/C - $1 (Heights area)

http://houston.craigslist.org/car/657572140.html

Here is the deal on the impala. I bough this as a project. It has a 327, the original from what I am told. It has working a/c and the electronic distributor. I have clear title for the car, but it is not inspected. It still needs a couple of things to get to that point (turn signal switch, horn). When I got this car, I started to slowly replace this and that as needed. Each time I replaced an item, I would take the old one off, clean it up (either by sandblasting or sanding / engine parts) and then repaint and replace that part or metal around the part. I have replaced the starter, water pump, battery, hoses, and belts. I started cleaning up the engine compartment, trying to make it look nicer, but I got stopped due to an injury. As it sat, while my injury was healing, my wife told me that she wanted it to go. Now that I am back at work, my schedule has changed leaving me little to no extra time with the car. It is not a piece of junk, but does need work. The car sat in OK for several years until about a year ago. I bought it from a guy in Dallas. I also paid him to redo the front end and set the alignment. The car has new generic tires and wheels (nothing fancy, but nothing has has to be replaced soon either). The car drives straight. There is some surface rust around the car with some rusting in the quarter panels, around the back window, and in the trunk. This is normal for these cars. The interior will need to replaced at some point.

These pictures were taken back in May, I think. I have invested over $6k, but I am open to offers. I will accept highest bid over $4500. I can't go too low though. Momma would have my hide.

Thanks for your interest.

2. 68 chevy Caprice Coupe 327 - $10000 (Cypress)

Either the AMC Gremlin, or the AMC Pacer.

It would depend on whether I was looking for power or style.

Hahahaha. As do I. My all time favorite classic muscle car would probably be a tie between the above Camaro, this

and, though it's in a different category, this:

5 to 10K ain't much for a classic. I guess I'd probably get as much Vette' as I could and call it day. Maybe a Porsche 928 that hasn't been beat on too hard.

You ain't getting a drivable classic for that much anymore.

As for me, I'd take one of these in a heartbeat!

http://www.aa1car.com/blog/64_jaguar_xke.jpg

This ranks up there on the list too!

http://www.aa1car.com/blog/67_corvette.jpg

There are any number of Ferraris I would want but this one springs to mind readily!

http://www.automotoportal.com/media/images/vijesti/060915001.7.jpg

But hands down, the one I want the most is, of course, a Ford!

http://www.ritzsite.net/AC_Cobra/1968_Ford_GT40_Mk_I.jpg

That's a '68 but in '67 A.J. Foyt and Dan Gurney were doing 200+ MPH down the Mulsanne Straight while handily whipping Ferrari and well, everybody else for that matter. The Straight did not get the chicanes installed until 1990 when the speeds that the GT40 was reaching in 1967 were deemed "unsafe" because the entire field was averaging around 250 MPH on the 3.1 mile straightaway. Yeah, that is a bad ass car well ahead of it's time. Imagine what it could do on modern rubber?

Oh and BTW, if I had any one of them, I'd drive the wheels off!

Well, if you're looking for power:

Those Gremlins were also chick magnets, as seen:

Now, if you're looking for top-of-the-line eloquence, to impress your lady after a night at the opera:

33005

Eloquent, yet functional, for when you need to tend to the thoroughbreds down at the stables:

Yes, AMC had it all.

1965-67 Sunbeam Tiger

The West Coast Sales Manager of Rootes American Motors Inc., Ian Garrad, realised that the Alpine's image was that of a touring car rather than a sports car, and he set about changing its image, using the recent success of the Shelby Cobra as a guide. He and Rootes' Western Service Manager Walter McKenzie measured up several V-8 engines and determined that Ford's new 164 hp (122 kW) 260 CID (4.3 L) Windsor V8 engine would fit nicely between the frame rails.

Sunbeam asked Carroll Shelby to produce one functional prototype on a budget of US$10,000. Shelby's prototype was fabricated by Shelby employee George Boskoff, and the result was judged to be good enough to send to England for production evaluation.

Production of the Tiger only lasted from 1964 until Chrysler purchased Rootes in June 1967. Chrysler could not be realistically expected to sell a car with a Ford engine, but had no suitable engine of its own with which to replace the Ford — Chrysler V8 engines all had the distributor positioned at the rear of the engine, unlike the front-mounted distributor of the Ford V8, making it impossible to fit the Chrysler engine into the Sunbeam engine bay without major, and expensive, revisions. Thus the Tiger was cancelled.

The final year 1967 saw the Tiger get the 289 Ford motor w/200hp. Only 536 "289" versions were made before being sold to Chrysler and the plug was pulled.

That is true except some of those mentioned are reasonably priced and attainable today as runners. $5-10K won't get you much, let alone a true classic.

Hey Brock, My brother had a '67 Tiger with the 289 back in the day. That was a runnin' little sumb!tch.

I would love to own one today. Easy to work on, easy to find parts, nice traditional coach work, Caroll Shelby lineage, and a classic engine.

Ok, trying to keep within the $5-10K range.

This was another childhood favorite and my best friend in highschool had one of these.

Fiat 124 Spider (later named the Pinninfarina 2000 Spider)

The engine utilized in the Spider and Coupé was a double overhead cam, aluminum crossflow head version of the sedan's pushrod unit. It started in 1966 with a capacity of 1438 cc progressively increasing to 1608 cc in 1970 (although this reduced to 1592 cc in 1973), 1756 cc in 1974 and finally 1995 cc in 1979. Fuel injection replaced carburettors in 1980.There was also a supercharged model called Volumex offered toward the end of production, but these are rare. This family of engines was designed by ex-Ferrari chief engineer Aurelio Lampredi and in one form or another remained in production into the 1990s giving it one of the longest production runs in history. The double overhead cam (DOHC) version was the first mass manufactured DOHC to utilize reinforced rubber timing belts, an innovation that would come into nearly universal use in the decades after its introduction.

The Coupe and Spider were first sold in the US market in 1968. In 1969, the Spider was one of the few affordable cars with 4 wheel disc brakes, double overhead cams, hesitation wipers, steering column mounted lighting controls, radial ply tires and a 5 speed transmission. It's convertible top could be raised and locked in place in 15 seconds. With a MSRP of $3250 (Car and Driver, 1968), the Fiats compared favorably to the Volvo 122 ($3000) and Plymouth Barracuda (with the 340ci engine, $3200).[citation needed].

Late in its life, Fiat abandoned production of the Spider as well as the X1/9 — to have their production assumed by their respective carozzeria. An early special version was the 124 Spider Abarth which incorporated such things as an independent rear axle, hardtop, different seats, interior etc and only came in 3 colours.

Notably, the body of the Spider remained unchanged for its entire production run, with little modification.

Pininfarina did the styling and the Spider never really looked outdated, even integrating 1970s federal “crash bumpers” without much disruption. The arms-out driving position was too Italian for most, and despite a padded “back seat,” this ragtop was a 2+2 in theory only. But the five-speed gearbox shifted crisply, instrumentation was thorough, and no sports car had a soft top that folded easier or sealed better.

The 96-hp 1.5-liter enlargement of the 124 engine boasted a new twincam head with toothed-belt cam drive, a world first. Displacement and tuning fluctuated during the ’70s to meet U.S. smog rules. The car reached its ultimate form by 1981 as the Spider 2000, with a fuel-injected 102-hp 2.0-liter. Fiat fled the American market in 1984, but transferred Spider production and marketing to the coachbuilder, which sold an upgraded edition, the Pininfarina Azzurra, for another year or so in the United States.

"It’s a highly refined sports car with appealing styling, excellent ride and handling, and rather modest all-out performance,” said Road & Track in 1976. “It isn’t as new as tomorrow by any means but it has survived the test of the years to become a classic in its own time.”

Greatness doesn’t require a sports car to gain stature after it retires. That it was great in its own time, on its own terms, is quite enough.

I'm thinking Volvo P1800, perhaps a 164e or a 544. Lotsa COOL vintage Volvo out there. The 1800's can be pricey but you can get them reasonable as well.

A 70's 'Vette is in that range too.

Yep, TR7. I grew up and my dad raced MG's and Austin Healey's in late 60's. The TR8 was the ticket, same coachwork more or less as the TR7 except with a V-8 shoe horned in there. Classic British car.

That's actually not even that great of a deal on that Cougar. Most likely you are replacing every belt, hose and gasket. The gas tank probably needs to be replaced along with the fuel pump.

Even in excellent condition, these aren't worth ALL that much.

I had a 1970 Mustang in that color scheme! I had the 429ci (I believe it was either 428 or 429ci) in it. The yellow is a dark yellow that did fade/oxidize out sometimes to an orangy hue.

I have a friend with one, he put a newer sciracco engine and suspention stuff on it, it sits about 2" of the ground and rides like a shopping cart, scary little car.

Another guy I went to high school with that never grew up recently bought his dream car, a calloway turbo scirraco, yeah I thought they only did vettes but he has the factory scirraco, why I don't know;)

Yep, I had an original Scirocco and a friend in Cali had a full Drake racing turbo Scirocco. My GTi was also lowered 2" and had an ultra cool sounding exhaust. The suspension on my GTi was so stiff that when I went to sell the car I noticed a few small stress cracks in the paint around the strut towers. Meaning the body was flexing before the suspension was. It really was overdone looking back, but that was a slot car if there ever was one. Beat the hell out of me on bad roads.

Aftermarket parts as well as technology has come a long way since the late 80's and there are alot more options. My current VR6 GTI has all the aftermarket performance goodies on it but it's a much more civilized car than my '83 GTi with essentially the same upgrades.

For 10K (often much less) you can get a very nice piece of Italian design. This is a 1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 Maratona edition (1 of 150). I drove one of these for around 10 years and have nothing but fond memories of this car.

Yep, live right here in the free state of Maryland. I live in Lexington Park, about 40 minutes south of Waldorf.

I've had several British cars. This is the best I've ever had. I've had it about 10 years now and still only has 36K original miles. I'm also restoring a 59 TR3A which is in 1000's of pieces right now. That is on the back burner for a bit since I just made an audio purchase and the wife wants a new patio!

What a beautiful car this is !! Star Chief hardtop with stock 279 V8 & 2 barrel for better mileage, power steering, New standard drum brakes, stock 4 speed hydramatic & stock highway gears. Beautiful Ruby red & white paint(3 yr. old) with a very few minor dings as it is a DRIVER..Near perfect stainless & chrome...(hood ornament & taillight bezels should be replaced). Runs & drives GREAT. All stock instruments work except clock. All lights work & will pass state inspection. Vacumn wipers should be replaced with electric..I think the Chevy aftermarket wiper unit will work. Near perfect Gray tweed interior. NO rips or tears. Alpine stereo. After market air with Sanden compressor. NEW American Racing wheels & New Kumho tires, , 17" front 18" rear give it a to die for stance. Underside is VERY clean & no rust issues. VERY reliable, start up & go anywhere, anytime cruiser..NOT a show car but won't embaress you at the show & will take some "also ran" & people choice awards. More thumbs up than any classic I have ever owned. NADA average is $19,100.00 plus 15% for hydro & A/C..You will have to agree with me that this car is at LEAST average !!
$16,000.00 CASH or BANK wire & worth every dime.

Impala SS for sale. I started a frame off restoration and I do not have the time to finish it. The car is completely disassembled. The body and frame are primed and ready for paint, it has a new gas tank, trunk pan and floor pans, and the body 100 % completely straight and just sitting on the frame, all the glass is good. This car is for someone who wants to build a show winner, just pick your color and put it back together. The work that has been completed thus far was professionally done and very expensive. I have a clear TX title; the car is a true numbers matching SS. I am the third owner; the second owner purchased the car in 1969 for a Chevrolet dealer in California. The car still had the California black tags when I purchased it. I paid $6500 for the car and I have invested over $6000 in the work done thus far. As you can see from the before picture (car was painted a copper color, car is now primer) the car was nice before I started the restoration. I do not have to sell the car, so please only serious inquiries. I can send more pictures upon request.

You know Candyapple,

There are things such as web space and blogs where this crap would be much more relevant. Posting word for word CL ads is plain stupid and clutters up CP. No one is discussing anything on this topic and you are just cutting and paisting information NO ONE but you cares about.

Get yourself a nice little piece of web space and start a blog for those who care. This thread has no redeeming value whatsover since you just started copying links into it. Let it die and do CP a favor and stop clogging the forum because you're bored.

You

waaaaaaaaaa

look at all the rude and obnoxious posts I have to ignore and you want to whine about a car thread or a bumper sticker thread roflol

The mods can see right thru your last ditch games to get me banned. The mods are most likely tired of hearing you whine. It's not that hard to ignore someone's posts or threads but you aren't even trying. Like I said I have to do it all day long and it's not that hard if you try.

have a good day. I know I am :D

Never said anything about the BS (bumper sticker thread). Atleast it has some discussion going on in it.

Not playing any games....just pointing out the complete lack of relevance of this thread. I agree others post irrelevant things, but they die rather quickly and are forgotten. But, because you're bored (whatever the reason) you keep cutting and pasting publicly available information which is only useful to a very small portion of the CP membership if they are even the slight bit interested.

I have Led Zeppelin blog, I could easily do what you are doing and cut and paste crap about LZ in a never ending thread. But since not everyone is interested in hearing about my passion for LZ I put a link in my signature. Yes, I have a large Karma thread going, but unlike this thread people are actually interested and post positive comments about what is available to them.

You should do the same (start a blog) for your CL listings you seem to be so passionate about.

I'm not baiting you or playing games anymore. It was just my suggestion, a light handed one at that. I'm sorry you are so paranoid to think every little point of criticism is designed; in your words "The mods can see right thru your last ditch games to get me banned. The mods are most likely tired of hearing you whine."

In fact other than the "Ears bleeding thread" this is the only thing I've posted that remotely has anything to do with you. I'm flattered to no end to think I have such an affect on you and your time here on CP. Hope to see you at PF '08 ;)

Never

I said my piece. You can continue debating this for another 5 pages if you want ;)

and by the way I've never opened your lz thread or if I did, it was only one time to see what it was all about. That's called self-control and I make an attempt to have the best I can.

excuse me while I drive my air conditioned 66 to lunch. Hopefully someone in their brand new 09 beemer won't plow into me. The 40 year old ps pump is starting to leak so that's my next project once the weather breaks here. A new reman. pump is $50 with exchange.

Back to the topic:

The second generation Corvairs were lovely to look at but, speaking from experience, I wouldn't recommend driving one. And as for the price qualification, you could probably get a few for $10K.

You are such a dumbass...

The point is, you keep bumping a thread that NOBODY but you is posting in. You are so dense that you can't figure out that nobody but you gives a shit about it. Let it die.

I could care less about you being banned. I actually think that if you'd pull your head out of your ass, you are probably an ok guy. Your problem is that you are so in need of attention and to stand out from the crowd that you don't mind being the scourge of the forum to do it. That's sick. If you would just be yourself, you would get along fine.

Here, Carl, I will properly quote his post. Quit being an a$$hole by truncating posts when you quote them. If you are going to minimize what they have said as if it isn't important, don't bother with the quote button. It is a blatant sign of disrespect.

1964 Chevrolet Impala SS hardtop.

327 engine, 4 speed, numbers matching.

no troubles. smooth easy ride. no oil leaks.
i have had to do no major repairs in the 4 years that i have had it. i changed the wheels but still have the originals which will go w/ the car when it sells.

i'll begin showing the car to any interested parties NEXT WEEK.

pics are at http://www.sendpix.com/albums/08091008/5x24irv4jd/?p=1
cut and paste this link into your browser.

$14000 price is firm.

nada values this car at $10,463 for "low retail," $19,575 for "average retail" and $33,480 for "high retail."

this car is fairly priced. i don't absolutely have to sell the car so the price is firm so i would appreciate it if you wouldn't contact me if you aren't looking to spend that much.

odometer reads about 35000.

once again, i'll begin showing the car to any interested parties NEXT WEEK.

thanks
