GTA IV Gameplay Thread (Funny stuff or Mission Questions)

Okay so I just got it for the ps3, and first off I have to say I was a little pissed off because when you first load the game it takes literally 10 minutes to load. I guess it loads a crap load of files so the in game action plays more seamlessly. But man it blew because i just wanted to jump in and play.

Okay on to the game. First off the cars are hard to drive. Really erratic, but after an hour I am getting used to it. Saw a Banshee but I was in the middle of a mission....man I was pissed about that. Drove some funky convertible, looked like a BMW, had a ton of high end torque, but the ass was all loosy goosy, could be a good car to use for a fast get away.

One quirk for me that has not been fixed is the in-car driving noise. Personally if I am in a car I want to listen to the radio, not the roar of the engine. I know you can turn it down, but it is really annoying to have to do this...again. Why not have the engine as a faint background noise, with talking and radio as the priority.

Funny thing is, I went to the apartment to save the game, ended up turning on the TV and watching like 30 minutes of TV..... then I realized...wtf am I doing. Here I am playing a game and I am watching Liberty City TV. So freaking odd....BTW- Bas Rutten is a hoot. Went on a date, I think I pissed her off. Oh well nothing new there.

Overall this game is keeping my attention way more than San Andreas was. I will not give this any type of rating until I am at least 25% through. I figure at that number I will be at least 15 hours into the game.

Okay so the first laugh out loud moment just happened to me and I had to run down and type it out.

I left the apartment and my ride was gone. (Despite them saying it stayed there) Any ways whats a man to do with no ride. So I try jacking one car but he was driving and I fell, so I got up turned around and there were a few cars lined up trying not to run over me. So I decide to jack the first one I see, Well for some reason I end up taking my time getting in the car. By the time I get in the car, the owner drags me back out and starts kicking my ass, along with some good deeded citizens looking out for the common man. I start to panic and I run to the passenger side of the car get in and procedd to make a hasty exit.

But wait whats this on my door? Its the owner of the car clinging to the door as a speed off. The man is screaming his head off for me to stop. I start spitting coffee out at the absurdity that I am watching. The guy seriously will not let go. So I take a corner real sharp, the door swings all the way open, impaling the guy to the front corner panel, the door then proceeds to whip back around flinging the guy off like a hot bag of poo, and slamming the door shut.

Oh man I have not laughed that hard in a long time. I wish I had a video of it.

My take on the game so far...
I never really got into any of the others, yes I played them, had fun.
I have not read the instauctions yet not the Guide/walkthrough book I bought. I am just starting to really understand how this game works. I do find the driving sloppy and that the car spin out of control too easy. Some parts of the game I find very dark and hard to see. I also think that there are some glitches, I drove a hummer and parked it on a guys car, thinking that would make it impossble for him to get away in it, well after kicking the crap out of two guys we tirn to the car and the hummer is gone and the car is in mint condition. I know I will like this game even more as I get into it. Right now I'm just trying to get used to everything.

Dont worry about the knife, just try to beat the living **** out of him. I too tried to take the knife, I ended up running away and regrouping, came back for him and just started punching and kicking him. He went down fast.

that stinks. Just after I picked up the PS3 I also got Final Fantasy XII (PS2 game). A couple times it froze on my right in the middle of a long session (hours of time wasted and unsaved). I was soooo PO'ed. It was weird though, I could still hit the PS button and bring up options to quit the game and whatever so I guess it was an issue with the PS2 compatability. But I have a 60GB model.

There's nothing worse than completing a bunch of stuff in a game and then having it freeze on you before you can save.

I don't have any consoles, so I just get to play the waiting game with GTA4. I find gaming a lot better on the computer with mouse control and I can use it for other things. I have been considering is the Wii, but just for the sports and Maria games.

Oh man Willow that sucks, It sounds like the 60gb models are getting hit hard with this. But there are some with the 20gb that are getting it too. I have the 20gb model, not one freeze. But this is seriously the first time I have really played the ps3, it has been more of a media server and blu-ray player the last 3 months.

Got the game today...played for about 2 hours.....very fun stuff..... went on the date..I sucked at the bowling..and when i got a gutter ball...me and Niko said the same thing..and it rhyms with hit.....with a S the front.......and then the cousin was cool with me not picking up the phone call for a date with a girl.....and as I was walking outside...some dudes were pissed because they had to smoke outside, even though they can do meth inside...


I was too mesmerized with the TV in the apartment....one show was about fallen celibrities who hit rock bottem and stayed there...

Fun galore is the SIXAXIS tutorial, I did great on the motorbike and the boat but crashed the chopper in the ocean... Fun as all hell. The tutorial is in your phone menu at the bottom. Enjoy !!

OK say you are standing in front of the shop facing the other side of the street. cross the street and go left, at the next side street turn right, you will end up behind buildings. There is a pile of junk and you will see the guide arrows and you will be told how to pick up the brick.

It's finally over. I got home and played a good solid 5 hours of GTA yesterday. My impressions:

Game is amazing. You can't go for 5 minutes without something crazy or funny happening. Here is one of experiences:

I was walking down the street minding my own business (admiring the graphics) when a car swerves off the street and hits me. I was mad so I get up and jack the car. I start to drive away and the guy won't give it up, he chases me down and since I was stuck in traffic throws me out of the car. So I start fist fighting with the guy not wanting to shot him and attract the attention of the cops. In the middle of my melee three more civilians decide to try and help this guy out. Then one of them whips out a shotgun! So I run trying to find some cover before I return fire. Meanwhile the cops happen to be passing by and saw the guy open fire on me. They get out and open fire on him! I find some cover and turn around to find that a battle has erupted between the cops and the civilians that were after me. I watch for a while then steel the car of the cops that helped me. lol

Nothing but GTA could provide such a moment. Simply walking down the street provides more entertainment then I could ask for.

I haven’t even gotten to the 2nd or 3rd sections of the city yet. Downtown is going to be a blast!

It wouldn't let me punch it for some reason. Near the trash cans on the street, there are tin cans (least that's what they look like) lying on the ground. Grab one of those and give it a heave (just press L1 a lot around the trash to pick one up.) The odd thing is, I don't think you can run with it in your hand, or the object disappears...at least thats what happened for me anyway.

I am with Mutelight on this. First starting the game it is very overwhelming. It's not like the old GTA's where you jump in do some unique jumps, grab a taxi to make some quick cash, maybe do a mission or two. This game and I think Rockstar in general looked at that and did the exact opposite. Making you want to play the story line, and ignoring the side stuff you would have done in the past.

What I found odd, and I did not realize until last night is that I rarely change the radio stations (except for the vladivostock station) It seems like the radio is very in tune to the environment. And I think we get a new radio station once we hit a new island. Integrity 2.0 with Lazlow is not to be found, yet I have heard commercials about it. Unless my eyes are decepting me, but I keep looking for it.

Oh and not cool being killed by a cop shooting you through your windshield!! LOL. Nice added and much needed touch by the Rockstar team.

My son helps me a lot while I play, but I did find that looking at your circular map will give you a ton of in game/mission help. Once I started looking more at that everything became more easier.

Just like in the asian mission, I was wondering around looking for something and not finding it. My son was like "How come your not going to the blue circle on the map?" DUH! Hit the blue circle, found the abandoned lot, and the bricks. I tried picking up a trash can but could not.

Okay so another odd thing today. Took Michelle on a date, dropped her off after getting rejected again, and I was heading back to my apartment. On the circular map I notice a small green figure on it. I head over and there is this guy motioning for me. I head over and talk to some whacked out dude and he gives me a hundred dollars.

So now I am thinking these are the new "hidden packages". So a few days later (game days) I exit the apartment, and I see he is on my map again, this time just around the corner, so i head over thinking I get another hundred dollars, only this time he drops me his name (Brian) and I have to take him to score some more drugs.

Not sure where this is going (dont tell me yet willow). But it was kinda cool how all of a sudden this side thing just popped in. Reminds me of the phone missions in GTA3.

I dissed michelle on our first or second date, but later called her and I've hit it a couple of times since. She noticed and made a comment about me wearing the same clothes as last time. Something doesn't seem right about that girl though, I'm looking forward to "dating" someone else. ;)

The physics for the cars is a bit lame. A lot of the cars handle the same, and handle like crap. The story is better, and adaptive.

I'm looking forward to unlocking more of the game.

I have done it successfully a few time but I recommend taking a cab because if there is a cop nearby they will light you up almost immediately because you involuntarily swerve. This game, for what it is, has a much stronger moral code than the previous ones. I am still floored by how amazing this title is. :eek:

It is funny how she doesn't mind if you hit pedestrians while driving as well.

My take on the game is it is freaking amazing. Multiplayer is great too.... I didn't even like the other GTAs that much, but with the story being this good I'm really getting into the world. It also is adding an extra level of morality for me. Like, I will often just call for a free cab instead of carjacking if I just need to get from point A to B. Your cousin's cab guy is hilarious.

I got a couple of achievements on the 360 version by jacking the helicopter and exploring. Survive a 6 star rating for 5 minutes, and escape a 4 star rating. (it was actually a 6, I lost everyone after falling out of the chopper into the water, and jacking a boat. 6 or 7 minutes of cruising the waves and I was out of the radar and cleared the stars.

Drove a dump truck, a delivery truck as well. Have you picked up a hooker yet? pull up to one honk your horn. Then you take her somewhere and choose your service, use the select button for views of whats going on.

It seems as though a big majority of people are having issues. And there are some really dumb A$$ people out there with suggestions and reasons, ie put your PS in the freezer to cool it down, it's because of the DS controler, it's because of internet connection everything I read sounds rediculous. I hope they come out with a fix soon cause I love this game and can't get enough of it. I'm just very dissapointed that it's not working as it should and that Rock* has nothing about it on their website. Off to play COD.......

Somehow after loading it yesterday my wireless internet is all messed up. Initially I lost connection with the PS3. I restored it and now I have connection with PS3 but when the PS3 is on my laptop connection is down?

I am with you on the connection issue. Ever since I started this game my hard-wired ps3 will now lose connection to the psn network and I will have to restart my router again. This has now happened at least 4 times. Now my son says his computer has lost internet connection...so it is off to reset the router AGAIN.

Not sure what the disk is trying to do to mess it all up, but these disks have some real problems with them.

On to the game, I did the truck mission too, that was a lot of fun. The next three missions after that were just crazy. Will not spoil it for anyone, but they are very intense.

Funny story...well funny to me. I started doing Brucies car missions. Which are just fantastic BTW. Any hoo, I grabbed his first car the PMP 600 (Which I feel is one of the better handling cars) So I ditched the police real fast and just started cruising with this car. Loved the physics of it, and for some reason I had Beat 102.7 on and there was a pretty jammin Rap tune going down.

So I get back on the bridge highway at a fairly high rate of speed, not realizing what I am doing I blow through the toll booth setting off a 5 star criminal beat down. Immediately the helo is right above me, and the cops are thick. I get off the highway and start doing my thing. Everywhere I turn there are more cops waiting. Well I get on the long straight away that leads to the "champs de elysees" looking thing. Now you of coarse can go around like a good citizen should and would, or you can blow through the middle like Niko always does. So I hit some more gas and hit the lip in front of the "champs" and got massive air. Now I have never noticed the cement barrier poles in front of this display, but I proceeded to land, (perfectly btw) hit the cement pole head on, of coarse Niko flies through the windshield screaming like a whore on nickel night. I stand up only to be hit by the cop car that was right behind me. Needless to say the cop car had no idea I was ejected, he never slowed down, and I was immediately launched about 100 feet in the air, and was rudely met by an unsuspecting group of people who I took out like bowling pins. Needless to say I died. But one of the best deaths I have ever had in GTA.

Yes. That's what happened to me. My laptop stopped and the PS3 would work. Now I can't get the PS3 to work wirelessly even though all my settings are correct. Not too happy here.

Perhaps they shouldn't have released the game on that platform, but I guess they'd have been chewed out no matter what they did. Might as well just make money and take the whining.

Okay So after all of this my son said his game would not load. No loading at all. I tried my game...same thing. Turned off the ps3, unhooked the wired ethernet, rebooted ps3, all games will load now. Not sure if it will work for everyone but it worked for me.

Wingnut, try disabling your wireless connection through the ps3 while playing GTA, then re-enable it when you want to lay COD.

Perhaps they shouldn't have released the game on that platform, but I guess they'd have been chewed out no matter what they did. Might as well just make money and take the whining.

why is it everyone else can make games without issues, yes I know there are other games with some. No excuse as far as I'm concerned.

Okay so all of you know, and I confirmed three times with my 20gb PS3, it will not load any game save with the Ethernet connected, at all. It goes through the pictures and starts to load your last game save and just hangs up at the black screen. I disconnect the cable from the ps3 and it loads every time. So if any of you have this issue unhooking your hard wired ps3, or disabling you wireless internet through the ps3 should do the trick.

They need to get a patch for this. I have no idea how I will get the patch to work if I cannot get on the internet during the game.

I have both versions solid squal, except my 360's are being fixed now. So I cannot play the 360 version until later this week at the earliest. Here is something interesting that was released in an interview from Take 2 yesterday....

I got my wireless working again but when I try to play multiplayer in GTA4 it keeps saying it can't connect to Playstation online and reverts to the single player version again. My COD4 is fine and I have been playing that online still.

Well I got it to work. What I did was disable internet on PS3 along with deleting all the saved GTA games from the PS except the one I was actually playing. I noticed it would freeze if I saved the game when I laid down in the bed. But if I let auto save do it , I have had no issues. Since I have done this, I have not had any issues..knock on wood.........:rolleyes:

Mini mission, I was at Faustino's place then I was being chased by cops around his house. I dove into the water escaped the cops... I walked up to a house and saw a glowing pigeon I decided to shoot it and it popped up I had more to kill it said 1 of xxx.

The Sixaxis thing is kewl. I did the tutorial. The helicopter is tricky though.

Willow...you probably wont catch him...he'll eventually meet up with 4 more motorcycle gang members..and you'll go into a grassy/park area..there...you'll just pick one off at a time from a distance....cause if you get too close..they have shotguns...and as you know..shotgun packs a punch, 1 shot..you are dead.....

Wingnut....if you go to the part of town where the strip club is...same as the 2nd safehouse after your first one burns down.....you'll find lots of hookers...they dress the part...and make sure you pay for the highest possible one....its funny when they say "now thats a soul pole "

ya.....Im starting some missions now in the main area of the map....get to drive around in the Times Square area......really cool stuff.....there are even some new clothing stores where you can buy suits for your guy............before I got to this area....I did one mission where you meet a gay guy in the diner..and you have to kill him......so after I killed him...I took out all the witness's for good measure..shotgun works really fast :D

Too funny man! I love it when the GPS is on and the voice is telling you when to turn then you hear the "ding-dong" and she tells you to turn again. Except one time (and the only time I have heard it) the lady voice actually says "ding dong". It was so random and it catches you so off guard that it just makes you laugh out loud. My kids are still talking about it and it happened three days ago. Never heard her do it again.

Yeah, Kate an Kiki (who I'm keeping). Kate is McCreary's younger sister and won't put out. You just have to keep her happy and you'll get the goods eventually. Btw.. she likes semi nice jean, not your carhart or wrangler style or color. She also likes white shoes and the top doesn't really matter. Try driving a Banshee (Viper Knockoff) or the one that start with an I - but looks like an Infiniti. She's easier to coax in that way.

Well, it depends on how you play and what you've completed in th past. I'm currently @ 13.8% completed. The heli mission called "Dust Off /UL Paper" is far in the game. If we follow the missions, you are much further than me. Does that help ?

Complicated how? I would seriously make the suggestion that if you are having problems with controlling issues, the best thing to do is go to your safe house, and save. Then get in a car and just start rampaging, running from cops, shooting vehicles then chase them as they drive away, stuff like that. Then when you come back to the game and the story line, everything is much easier, or it will seem that way. One thing I love to do is get as many wanted stars as I can, and see how long I can survive. Drive through a toll booth at a high rate of speed will give you at least 5 stars.

Really overall GTA is for the most part a very easy game.

This game is complicated.

I agree it can be complicated. The GTA series has always been harder than most games if you're actually following the story line. Hard may not be the right word - tedious might be the right one. You have to travel back to the mission start and sit through all of the loading screens again. That's my only real complaint with this entire series. As you get to the mid to later missions in the game they will often require you to do them a few times or more before you complete them (assuming you're not using cheats).

Oh yeah! Just about the first thing I did!

And if you get a good burnout going, then left of the brake just long enough to get moving, then get back on the brake and modulate it, you can do a continuous burnout all the way to wherever you're going! :D:D:D

Last night I did the Bank Robbery with Packie......it was a long mission...but very fun...lots of action....and at the end of the mission..it paid off really nicely $$$$

Has anyone completed the "Wanted" mission. I'm having a hard time there as well as a side mission for LJ, I go to deliver the drugs 2x and there is no one there.
I am really getting tired of Michelle, she's boring and I hooked up with her enough times.

You may have fulfilled the cabbie requirement for 100% completion. Thats probably why it disappeared.

No I have tried the mission5 more times and can;t seem to make it. The problem is I don't have enough weapons, so I must go out and buy some, Yes I know there are some lying around, but I like to go in there ready with tonns of ammo.

Get a cop car. Go on a few of the local crime missions and you will pick up plenty of weapons from the people you take down.

Brucie is one of the most hilarious characters in the game, because we all know that guy.

What opens it up is finishing up the Little Jacob line > Manny Escuela line > Elizabeta Torres line that Roman's GF tells you about after the first 2 Manny missions.

If you want to laugh at something stupid: Drag a friend into free roam, both of you get helicopters, find a really tall building you can land on... then get your friend to hover as close as possible next to it while you jump off the building and skydive into his rotor. It slings like like half-way across the city! Freakin' HILARIOUS!

We were curious just how well water works in the game... so we set up experiments the other night. For instance, I'd grab a fire truck, shoot a friend's car until it catches fire, then as he got out of the car running around in flames, I'd put him out. :)

We also learned that shortly after you blow a fire hydrant away, you can use that stream of water to extinguish yourself when on fire.

God... I've spent more time screwing around online than playing the single player. :D
