View Full Version : MIT Terminator 2 Speaker Cables-DEMO
Ricardo
05-03-2008, 07:29 PM
This demo consists of two pairs of cables:
1 Pair of old MIT Terminator 2 speaker cables (8 ft, spades both ends).
1 Pair of MIT Shotgun S3 RCA interconnects (1 m).
The terminators are mine and the Shotguns belong to Ted (reeltrouble1). We are offering these for polkies to demo in their homes with their systems. These cables are expensive so if you want to participate you need to follow some rules:
-You must have positive feedback from transactions in our flea market, and participate regularly in our club for at least 6 months. All applications will go through approval from Ted and me :)
-You'll have to pay for shipping (and packaging if needed) when you send them to the next in line, with insurance as follows:
Terminators: $200
Shotguns: $400
Signature is recommended
-If there's any damage or cables are lost, sender will need to lead and follow up the claim with the carrier.
You can choose to opt out from the Shotguns; in this case the Shotguns will be sent to the next in line, and stay there until that person receives the Terminators.
Process:
-Demo will last no more than 4 weeks.
-Sender owns coordinating communications with the next in line (request address, check if SHotguns will be included, and if not, get address from the next....)
-Name in bold means cables are either on their way or in his/her possession.
-Ted and I want to be informed (via PM) when the cables ship, and when they are received.
-It would be great that once you are done, you post a short review here, saying if you found any differences with other cables, be it better or worse.

Does an MIT terminator cost 10,000? I think you are joking?
The MIT magnum speaker cables cost $8,000, which is lower to the top of the line Oracle.
BTW, as of this writing.... there is a MIT terminator 2 (12 feet) pair speaker cable in ebay with a buy it now for $250.00!

These are great cables, and as soon as Ricardo sends me a PM with an addy off they go to the next person. Turns out in order for my rig to get the synergy it needed, I had to switch to silver cables, otherwise these would have found a permanent place in my rig.

I just finished a 3 week demo with these MIT 2's and want to share my impressions. I noticed an immediate difference compared to my Signal Cable Classic speaker cables. With the MIT's the higher frequencies were more forward and they sounded brighter than what I'm used to. Very detailed. For HT applications this was awesome and enjoyable. I prefered them over SC. For music I found some peices too bright for my preference. By the end of the three weeks my ears had adjusted and they didn't seem as bright as they did at the beginning.
Doing this demo was the best because I got to try out some new cables and expand my experience without having to purchase anything. Great idea Ricardo- thanks again.

I am loving these MIT speaker cables. I had been using some AQ Type X speaker wire that Tweeter sells. The difference was very noticeable from when I first put them in my system. The over all spectrum is improved with a noticeable improvement in my soundstaging, seperation of instruments and vocals. There is a noticeable improvement on the depth of soundstage also.
To sum it up in a nut shell my system now sounds more natural and realistic. There seems to be a great synergy between Musical Fidelity, MIT cables and Vintage Polk speakers.
My next goal is to purchase some MIT speaker cable. I am thinking the Shogun Type 3 and hoping they will work just as well.
My plan if it is OK with the others in line is to ship them to the next lucky person @ the first of July.
I will post more thoughts then if I have any more to ramble about.
Thanks again Ricardo.

I am in possession of these currently. I had forgotten I signed up and was pleasantly surprised when I got them.
I have been listening to them the past few hours and right out of the box I notice a bass emphasis. Haven't determined if that's good or bad yet. My system has never wanted for proper, well defined bass. Also the SDA properties are much more apparent on some songs and the MIT's seem to separate the instruments/singers a bit more.
Just some initial off the cuff impressions, more to come as I compare and demo :)

There is a funny story how H9 received these MIT cables. It was my mistake but it all worked out.
I am currently burning in my new pair of MIT Shotgun S3s speaker interface cables. Thes cables are very impressive in person much more so than what you see on the internets. They are more than "speaker wire' hence their "speaker interface cable" designation. Construction is MIL spec. if not better and yet they are still flexible enough to go around corners etc.
I ordered mine from Joe Abrams on A-gon. Top notch CS and communication.
I will have to post my listening findings later because they are still burning in which MIT calls 2 and 2. 2 days of burn in to get to 75% and 2 weeks to 100%.

I have to say these are very engaging cables. There is a crispness to the upper frequencies that is quite addictive w/o being harsh or strident or grainy. The hi-hat and other cymbals have a sparkle to them I notice more and more. The bass on certain songs can be just a tad overdone, but nothing to complain about.
I'm enjoying these and it's going to be hard to let them go. ;)

I miss these already :p. They are packed and ready to go.
The amazing thing to me is even in my modest system I can hear such a difference between cables.
Currently I'm using a pair of IXOS cables with sturdy banana plugs on the end and they really sounded good compared to some others I've tested. The MIT's certainly take it to another level. The bass is much more solid and the highs have a crispness and air around them that I like very much. The sound stage has opened up even more especially the depth and separation between instruments and singers.
With this hobby I have tried hard to stay on a strict budget because I really do enjoy my system, but it's times like this where I now know if I splurge and spend some serious $$$ on cables they will make a positive difference.
I still need to figure out if the "extra" bass from the MIT's is some sort of slight coloration or if it's the "real" thing. Time to do some extensive research on the MIT network box.
Seriously Ricardo, let everyone who wants; have a chance. Since these are now on my short list, I'd like a shot at them again in a new environment to see if I come to some of the same conclusions. I'm in no hurry since it will take some time to settle in to the new place and start some different impressions of my current system in a new listening environment.
Ricardo, what should I insure these for? I'm paranoid now after UPS screwed the pooch on my LSi 7's. I almost feel as if I should make these "signature required" as I'm responsible for them until they reach SKsolutions.

Good question on the insurance; just go with $100. I think that's the included coverage with UPS, Fedex, etc...... isn't it?
On the network box, those old ones only have an inductor on it. I know because one came apart when I got them. I understand the new ones have more components.

OK guys, this thread has tickled my better side and is a definite throwback to a time when the Club Polk Nation was being built by Polkies helping Polkies.
I am going to coordinate with Ricardo to keep this demo running smoothly and running in order, what I am going to do is add a set of Shotgun S-3 1meter interconnects to the demo. These are my personal cables. In order to participate in this demo you will need to be participating in the Terminator 2 speaker demo. You can run your rig with each set individually and then together or what have you, you will need to know the input impedance of the piece of gear receiving the signal as these cables have a simple switch to adjust them to fit your gear.
Again you must participate in the Terminator 2 demo and you must post in this thread about your experience. Everything else would be in line with what Ricardo is doing and of course I reserve the right to have the cables sent where and to whom I want. The person doing the demo will be responsible for shipping costs and insurance for 400.00 for this set of interconnects when sending them to the next person. If you do not want to demo them then let the person sending you the Term 2 know and these will go to next person who will hold them until they recieve the Terminator 2 and complete there demo. Please keep me advised of where the cables are and who has them.
I will need the addy to send these to the member who is getting the Term 2 from Brock.

Stop complaining Steve....:)
Ted, that is a wonderful idea. One thing I learned in my MIT journey is that there is some synergy and added benefits when using both their IC's and speaker cables. Shotgun S3 is what I have in my system and it seems they will stay.
I think that everyone should try both; the insurance requirements will make shipping a bit more expensive, but it will still be the cost of a couple lattes.
Mark, I hope you are reading so that you can update the first post ;)

My MIT Shotguns S3's have burned in quite nicely. They are quite a step above the Terminator 2's. I highly recommend the Shotgun S3's. They are a very sonically balanced cable IMO. I have plenty bass now compared to my previous AQ speaker wire and the top end is just so smooth. Sound stage is wide and deep.
MIT SHotgun S3's made even more of an improvement than redoing my crossovers with Sonicaps and Mills resisters, and that is saying a lot.
You will not be dissapointed.

I'll try to make this readable and coherent. . . . not a strong point of mine. I did not have a huge amount of time with these, because I got real busy on a project (I posted some project pics in the picture thread, so I hope that gets me of the hook a bit). I have some mid-fi gear, in an medium sized room, with above average room acoustics. It's the original lathe and plaster from 1930, with the 8.6' ceiling being sheetrock. It's open at the back to a central landing so that the front wall will pressurize, and no reflections come from the rear. Very limited standing waves. The speakers are 4' out from the wall, and 3.5' from the sidewalls with 8' of separation. Seating is 9' from speakers.
Gear > Cable:
Cambridge 540v2 player> Ben's silver IC
B&K ST1400mkII amp> 1m AQ Copperhead
HK pre> 1m AQ Copperhead
Polk LSi9's, 31" stands> AQ Type 4
Above gear and cables with Terminators in the speaker postion
The speaker cables came first, and I got them right on, and gave a listen. They were replacing the AQ type 4, which replaced a Canare. I was immediately aware that there was more top end. I let them play, and went to work.
Pro: Bass was as good. Top end was superior. Stage was larger. I loved the sparkle without any glare, and the extension that these had.
Con: Some midrange drive was missing. The sound was there, and it seemed to be neutral, but some energy seemed to be missing. It's like the curve followed, but the amplitude didn't track for this certain frequency. I would hear the notes, but not feel them as much- if that helps. Also, for whatever reason, with the associated gear, I got listening fatigue for the first time. If you note, all the gear is on the 'warm' side, except the CA player.
Shotguns in pre to amp position, all others as listed above
When I unpacked these, I was impressed. Great build. All the cables remained as listed above.
These had the similar top end extension that the Terminators had, but it was a different flavor. The bottom end was steady and articulate, and overall it seemed to be very balanced and flat. The soundstage seemed to widen, but I lost some reference to center, which, when combined with the higher extension, localized the 9's more in the room. There was a small amount of detail retrieval with these that I didn't get with the AQ cable.
If I'd had more time with it, I would have tried repositioning the speaker to see if I could have made it work better in my room. As positioned, and even with the extra detail, the AQ gave me more of what I wanted and how I wanted it.
Together
I then tried them together right before I had to ship them out. They do play nice together, but I still got some fatigue. I wouldn't assume that it's the speaker cable. It may be a combination of the room, gear, and cables. I have some silver in the system as well, and CA players aren't all that forgiving.
To sum up. I dug them both, but would not be able to keep the Terminators without changing other things as well. The Shotguns, I think, gave me a better idea of what their 'house' sound is.
In the end, and for now, the AQ and BWaudio cables stay. When the amp and pre are changed out this fall/winter, I may try this again. Solid core sounds better to me right now, and may be hiding some of the weak points.:)
Thank you Ricardo, Ted, and all those that come before and after me on the list. It's been very cool.

Believe I follow Phuzz in the list if that's still ok. This is coming at a perfect time for me. I've got no money but getting a new demo at no charge is perfect.
I look forward to hearing them and giving some feedback. I've passed on my addy to phuzz.
Thanks!
Rich
I've gotten the PMs, and am keeping an eye out for the cables. Looking forward to this! Thanks!

Rich, yes you do follow Phuz. Anthony (amulford) was in line before phuz but he could not take delivery, so that's why I am asking if he wants to go after him. Of course if he cannot take them the cables will go to you ;)

Got it. Thanks.
Got them today. They're hooked up and warming up. :)
Question: I've never seen or known about the imedance matching feature in the interconnets. What should this be set to? Or how do I know what to set it to? Any documentation would be helpful.
Look in your pre's owners manual under specs, input impedance.

Phuz,
You need to know the input impedence for the gear the signal is going to, if you cannot find out set the switch in the middle.

I The bass is much more solid and the highs have a crispness and air around them that I like very much. The sound stage has opened up even more especially the depth and separation between instruments and singers.

Check this out someone is using my review in their add on ebay

MIT audio cables to me are the best! One reviewer on the Polk Audio Forum explains it this way:
"...the bass is much more solid, highs have a crispness and air around them, the sound stage has opened up - even more the depth and separation between instruments and singers..."
This is taken straight from the body of his ad. Wonder if I get 15% of the sale?

Knock knock, is this thing on? Who's next, and where do they go? Please PM me. I'm just sitting on them right now waiting on info. Thanks. :)

I sent my addy back on the 6th but just resent today via PM.
Thanks
Rich
Sorry Rich had forgotten about that PM. They're on their way. Should be there on the 6th.
When I get a minute I'll try to write something up. I will say I really enjoyed the cables and they did make a difference over my Kimber 8tc/Hero combo. Considering overall synergy I'm thinking I'll maybe upgrade my pre and/or amp before I go on a cable binge though.
Thanks for this opportunity guys. When I get a moment I've got some stuff going up for Karma so keep an eye out...
