I have a pair of 25 year old speakers that I used during college. I think they are monitor 5's or maybe 7's? One question: how can I tell what type of speakers they are? I don't see any identification numbers anywhere.

They sounded great but I blew out a mid on one of them. I'm putting together a home theater. Should I repair these speakers or just get new ones?

Thanks for any advice.

Repair them for sure. Polk Monitors are classic and sound great! There are a fair amount of people who still use them for 2 channel and HT.

PolkSDA.com (http://www.polksda.com/ebay.shtml) has a whole list of the different Polk speakers if you want to "polk around" and see if one of them matches what you have. Keep in mind that many of the Monitor series had sub-models.

The monitor 7 has a 10 inch radiator. Montor 5 had an 8. Both with one tweeter and one 6.5 midbass. Drivers are always popping up here and on ebay.

Pull out the bad driver, look at the back of it for the model number. It will begin with MW. Call Polk Customer Service and order a new one.

Actually (and not to muddy the waters) the ORIGINAL Polk Model 7 had an 8" PR. But they are not common. The cabinets of the 7s are considerably bigger than the 5s or 5jrs.

The very original Models 7 and 10:

A Monitor 5(B?):

A Monitor 7A:

An original Model 10:

The midbass drivers of all of the above are 6-1/2" in diameter.
