Picked up a pair by accident. Looking for some rta 8tls, checked craigslist and stumbled on these for $125.00, from the original, owner ten minutes from my house. Wow. All the bottom corners are dented, oh well. The grills need to be recovered but aren`t broken. All drivers are sweet. Oak finish. What is the best route to recover these? Upholstery shop or special fabric?

Grill material is available from PartsExpress.com or your local fabric store.

Thanks. They will replace my sda 2b`s as surrounds. I will list them as soon as I get enough posts. They are super clean (the sda`s).

Please, we don't do that "score" stuff here.

IMO, you should keep the 2B's, a much better speaker all around.

2B's are a better speaker.

Perhaps the SDA's are better, but he just might want to reclaim some real estate with the RTA's.

Congrats Dacoupedeville!

F1, your being a little hard on him. Half the posts in this section are about scoring a set of vintage Polks.

dacoupedeville,
Check the internet and see if you have a Hancock Fabrics store near you. If so, you can get some excellent grill fabric there. Its called Ponte Knit Cloth, get the black color of course. I recently used this to re-do my RTA-11T and it worked great. I used a glue called "amazing goop" that I would highly recommend. I picked up the glue at my local Ace.

If you don't have a Hancock near you, then I'd go with the regular black cloth from Parts Express.

Cathy, the size difference is minimal and since you can keep the SDA's closer to the wall than the RTA's, the SDA's are going to be less obtrusive.

Bill, it's not the finding of a piece of gear, it's the word "score" in the title. It's so AK'ish.

Ok Jesse. I just see the SDA's as too wide, I wouldn't have room for them. The depth might be fine though. How come they can hug the wall & the RTA's can't?

The RTA's have a rear-firing passive radiator that sounds like poop if you get it too close to the wall.

Congrats on the RTA-15's Justin, even out away from the wall a little bit, you might achieve a higher WAF with the 15's. I just got done modding a set of these, and they sound really nice now.

I just thought the rta`s would be better as a surround applcation for music. I am a huge SDA fan and would rather see them used as mains or a stereo pair. I expected a bump, not a zing. My bad. Either way, that was the advice I was looking for on the grill cloth. Thanks.

Probably, although the RTA 15's are the pickiest as far as positioning goes. And perhaps overkill for surround duty :p. SDA's are pretty much wasted in surround application, IMO. I know there are those that have done it.

Now you can use the 2B's in another dedicated 2-ch system. You also just won a pair of 3.1TL's on ebay; correct?

Yes on the 3.1s.

In my second system I run a Mesa Tigris tube integrated to a pair of lsi15s. It sounds amazing.

Maybe I should move the rta15tls to fund the tl upgrade to the 2bs and silk domes for the 3.1s. The 2bs are in 9/10 condition and the 15tls are about 6.5 (need restoring). Its not like I want rid of the sda 2s (that would be crazy).
