So I bought the Best of Kansas - remastered for $3 used, and the disc is fine and all... but it seems like they really pumped up the highs on this remaster. It's pretty detailed to me..

is this common for them to extend the highs so much on remastered CD's? I wish I had the standard issue to compare it to.

*Kansas sure didn't have many hits did they? :p

Yes Al it is fairly common for them to bump everything up with remasters. Actually I don't know if it has been bumped up or cleaned up, but I pick up on things that I never heard in the original disks or it was so badly done that once I get the remastered version the old one goes into the trash!

If I'm looking for an old album the first thing I look for is if it has been remastered.

Yeah, I love that title too, The "Best" of Kansas, like they had a lot.

Liked their hits - I think only "Dust in the Wind" & "Carry On My Wayward Son."

Most of the remasters that I've bought are better than the originals to which I've compared them. I've heard more details because everything's just cleaner & clearer. My only crumby remaster is the Mamas & Pappas Greatest Hits. Horri-stinkin'-bible!

I picked up Metallica's And justice for all the other day & THAT really needs to be remixed & remastered. I love to listen to music loud but this is the first time I have ever really experienced ear pain from loud music for 15 mins. Their DCC remastered cd's are awesome though, & even older than justice for all.

I agree, the DCC remastered recordings sound great!

I find that most current remastered CD's suck, the levels are pushed to the max. Victims of the loudness wars. MoFi (old and new) and the old DCC remasters are generally the best. However, SACD beats them all.

Loudness doesn't bother me, I just turn down the volume.

The problem with remastered, too hot to handle, CD's is they lose all dynamics and their musicality.
