I've recently purchased:
Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely - 8.5/10, I really dig this album
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas - 8/10, I listen to this album nonstop but might not be everyone's cup of tea
I've heard some good buzz about Vampire Weekend but haven't heard much of their stuff yet. I've been listening to some Modest Mouse and Interpol recently as well, both good bands in my opinion.

The Vampire Weekend album is stellar. I've had it on repeat for weeks now.
Interpol is one of my favorites. I've been lucky enough to catch them in concert several times. Excellent shows.

picked up this yesterday:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41N9T43D1FL._SS500_.jpg
great record and well recorded. also features some big names,
and
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41-d-GhGi%2BL._SS400_.jpg
a strangely abbreviated yet thorough compilation--- featuring the best players. besides, HH kills.
also picked up a couple of dave brubeck records, pat metheny "american garage", and mott the hoople "rock and roll queen" on used vinyl, and jack johnson's newest on new vinyl. also a sealed copy (ahh, NOS lol) of the soundtrack for "siesta" (miles davis and marcus miller) from '86--- pretty interesting stuff, i must say.
in this bush economy, i should really stay out of record stores  .

Vampire Weekend

Release Date: 1/29/2008
Recent college grads get an A- in Advanced Rock Chic
Reviewed by Ben Sisario
In “Oxford Comma,” Ezra Koenig ponders a question straight out of a preppies-behaving-badly Whit Stillman film. “Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?” he sings over a staccato organ riff, coyly angling for a nerdy, flirty debate. Addressing a lover whose blood is as blue as his, he’s referring to a finer point of punctuation, and as the song swells with angsty, Afropop-tinged guitars, Koenig shouts out both Lil Jon and the Dalai Lama.
Fond of showing off their bonus-miles-worthy worldliness (“Spilled kefir/On your keffiyah”), this quartet of blog-hyped Columbia University grads pick up the thread of 1980s world beat exemplified by Paul Simon, Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel. Though they know their Congolese soukous and vintage calypso, they never lose footing in their taut, hook-heavy pop tunes. “M79” follows an impressionistic bus trip across Central Park (“pollination yellow cab”), its harpsichord and chamber strings—arranged by the group’s instrumental mastermind, Rostam Batmanglij—given bounce by a cool early-ska lilt. Koenig’s slippery tenor is boyish but not innocent; he sounds as if he’s asking questions he already knows the answers to, whether on a date or in the classroom.
Musical explorers run the risk of becoming simple tourists, spicing up their material with hints of exotica. And the endless hopscotching—from Dharamsala to Hyannisport to NYC—is steeped in leisurely privilege (they jokingly call their sound Upper West Side Soweto). But Vampire Weekend’s version of globalization is too tightly and smartly woven to be mere dilettantism, and at times Koenig is emphatic, even desperate, about escaping white-bred familiarity. In “Walcott,” he urges a friend: “Don’t you know/That your life could be lost?/Out of Cape Cod tonight.” In other words, find new places, new sounds.
A few new CD's added to the collection;
Jack Johnson - Sleep through the Static
Colbie Caillat - Coco
Within Temptation - The Heart of Everything
Andy McKee - Art of Motion
Malher (St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra) - Symphony No. 5

Yes, Rush "Moving Pictures" well above par recording. http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67348
Also, Evanescence "Anywhere but Home" great recording and good tunes. LIVE album. Set the volume, grab a beer, sit down and enjoy the concert. This one parks in the CDP often and loves to be played loud.
All the other CD's I've purchased in the past two months are just that. CD's, or normal to badly recorded music.

If I remember correctly, you're a bit of a Paul Simon fan. You'll definitely find shades of him all over the album - in particular, Graceland.
NIN's new release, "The Slip" is a improvement over anything Trent has released in the last couple of years.
Free download too, even in 4608 kbps PCM, which is between CD and SACD quality.

I am not a Simon fan per se but Graceland is one off my top ten favorite albums of all time. Soooooo .... In spite of the fact that you like the Sugar Cubes :p I just picked up the VW album.
Actually, the Cubes grew on me too. :)

I just watched Stevie Ray Vaughans DVD from his boxed set and loved it. Now listening to disc 3. Wow, haven't listened to these since I upgraded. I'm listening in the all channel stereo mode on the Onkyo 805 now. Tried unplugged and 2 channel but like the all channel stereo for now anyway. Any thoughts? I brought the Extech digital sound level meter from work and it indicates I'm listening at around 105 db. Am I deaf or just too much scotch? :D

I second the Vampire Weekend recommendation. That's probably the best CD I've bought in a while. I really like Panda Bear's Person Pitch, but gotta warn it's a little weird (kinda like trippy Beach Boys).
I'll have to check out the new Raconteurs album.
June is gonna be a great month for new music: Wolf Parade, My Morning Jacket, The M's, Weezer, Radiohead (best of), etc.
What can I say?
I love Jason. Why, I may even make love to him now that he's single again.
But man, I don't get your taste in muzak.
"Neon Bible" made me want to hit myself in the crotch. I had to beat kittens in response to Interpol's latest pile. Vampire Weekend was OK - although after listening to a few tracks - I felt the urge to stab my eardrums with a set of chopsticks. Instead however, I opted to throw the disc under the lawnmower.
I hopes this doesn't change what we've got bay-be. But I felt it better to be direct and honest. btw: you can have your chopsticks back.

I bought 18 a few years ago, and it was enjoyable. Not something I would get stuck on, but pretty mellow music.
I have been listening to Across the Universe soundtrack alot. Last cd I bought was Jimmy Eat World, and I liked it, was the one with Sweetness and A Praise Chorus.
Someone mentioned Silversun Pickups. I only know one song, Lazy Eye, but it was really good.

I'm listening to the new Death Cab for Cutie album. I'm only through song 6, but it's pretty solid so far.
Oh, and I know I've already given a shout out for Silversun Pickups, but I listened to their album cover to cover last night and it's definitely worth a listen. Lazy Eye is very good, but there are a couple I like just as much (Well thought out twinkles may be the best).

My best CD purchases so far this year have been:
The Loved Ones - Build And Burn: A great rock album with a bit of Americana thrown in for good measure.
No Use For A Name - The Feel Good Record Of The Year: In my opinion, the best album they've ever done. A nice evolution from their old punk sound.
Punch Brothers - Punch: Nickel Creek's Chris Thile and friends playing some amazing bluegrass with a little jazz/classical vibe thrown into the mix. The album was basically mic'd and recorded with everyone in the room, giving the mix a very "you are there" feel. My only complaint is that Thile's vocals are slightly more in the right speaker than centered, but it's a minor niggle compared to the musical excellence you'll hear on this disc.

hmmm, lets see... i just had my 500 gig hard drive die on me.. what if I had had all my music files on there and I couldn't recover them? Do you think I would be pissed losing all that download money? Uhhhh yeah!
CD's last a lot longer. i rip it to a MP3 file, then I still got the CD should my hard drive die again.. no paying for it again. capiche!

agreed. IMNSHO, itunes sux.
i find i almost cant even listen to mp3s anymore, especially the low bitrate ones that seem to permeate a lot of ifolk's icollections. too much weird crap up top.
as far as $20 on a disc.... nope, not me. well, maybe on a rare occasion. if you do a little homework you will find that you can buy almost any cd for half of that, and lots for less than that. then, there is the used market.
i do find it interesting (and a little unsettling) that cds have basically stayed at the same retail price since they were created  but i digress.
then again, the last $30 i spent on new music was on *new* vinyl, so there you go. i am lucky to have a reasonably decent record store within blocks of the 'crib.

Though its seven or eight months old, I just got Radiohead In Rainbows.
I know that Radiohead fans will have strong opinions about the pecking order of their CDs because, unlike Coldplay, each of their albums has such a distinct sound (OK, well maybe the new Coldplay sounds different from the previous three). Anyway, having spun it several times now, I think that In Rainbows is their best work since OK Computer, which I still regard as their finest album to date.
The other two albums that continue to astound me recently also date from 2006/07: Cat Power The Greatest and Iron & Wine The Shepherds Dog. I've been listening to each for several months now and am still enjoying them more and more.

Moody blues - To our children's children's children
Found it at the thrift store $2 but everything in the store was 1/2 price that day. I was out the door and almost to my car and decided to go back and get it. I had trouble finding it again since they have a ton of cd's because no one wants to pay $2 for a used cd. This one was like new with no scratches. I've been listening to it continuously now for a couple of weeks in the car.

Nice, I dig it! The Greatest on vinyl sounds damn good. Listening to In Rainbows as I type and fuking love it. "I don't wanna be your friend, I just wanna be your lover." Thom Yorke sounding like Prince...dig it. About time that dude cheers up a bit.

Thom Yorke sounding like Prince...dig it. About time that dude cheers up a bit. Rock steady.
And perhaps vice-versa....Now that you mention it, I have a 7-minute clip (not quite the full song) of Prince covering Radiohead's "Creep" at the Coachella concert this April. Its certainly not a professional recording (some background audience noise is present), but its good enough and there is this absolutely AMAZING falsetto that Prince projects in the middle of his rendition of the song, not to mention some very nifty guitar work (lots of folks tend to forget how fuckin talented that guy is with a guitar). Anyway, if you (or anyone else) wants the live clip, just send me your e-mail via PM and I can send it to you as an attachment.
I think you and I have discussed the merits of Spoon before. Just recently I picked up tickets to see Spoon open for Beck at the Hollywood Bowl in late September. Can't wait...I'm hoping both live up to my expectations as live artists. Its rare that I'll muster up the energy to go see a concert among the crowds these days, but aside from these two bands I think Prince would be at the top of the list.
