Be it Pilsner, Ale, Stout, Lager, Black-n-Tan, Imported, Domestic, or Micro...what's your favorite brew?

Its been while (mid 1990s) since I've explored tasty brews, and I thought others may have particular selections they'd like to share.

Not having tried anything new in a while, I'll put down Newcastle Brown Ale as mine. (But I seem to recall one by the name of Blackened Voodoo -- if I'm not mistaken -- that I always meant to try, but never did. I just thought it had the coolest name, not having any idea what it might taste like).

The world is full of some very good beer - as rich and complex and satisfying to the palate as a good wine (but seemingly doesn't get the same amount of respect...)

I enjoy most every type - depending on the actual brewer.

But - in general, my favorite type of beer is Porter - darker, richer than ales or lagers. My favorite Porter is Fullers London Porter.

Mmmmm...http://erikt.cts.com/Pictures/beer.gif

My favorite beer? FREE!

If I gotta pay, Yuengling.

Favorite seasonal stuff is from Weyerbacher. It's supposed to available year round but I can't always find it. Their India Pale Ale is incredible. Beats out anything else I've ever had and even puts the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale that everybody raves about to shame.

There is a brewery in Vermont called Shed and they have a Mountain Ale that I can only get if I visit my sister or she comes down and drags a 3 gallon growler with her. That lasts about a day and a half.

Those are my favorites.

no two people in here will agree on the best beer. it's impossible.. just like the cable debate.. no one wins.

with that said.. i like a medium bodied beer... I used to go with like Kokanee.. but I find that to light anymore.

Right now I like Blue Moon

The beer is orange-amber in color with a cloudy appearance due to the fact that it is unfiltered. It is also spiced with coriander and orange peel in addition to the hops found in most beers. Blue Moon does have a more pronounced orange flavor than many other beers of the style. The grain bill for Blue Moon includes malted barley, white wheat, and oats

Way too hard for me to decide. I agree with the comment about anything by Rogue. If I had to choose one, I guess it would be Anderson Valley Brewing Company's Hop Ottin. At the Great American Beer Festival last year, Firestone Walker had some of the best beers I've ever had, but I can't buy any of their stuff in the midwest.

Very good stuff! My favorite vodka.

Most people don't realize that it's Polish though. Nothing Russian or Swedish about it.

Nice thing about it is that it is a single grain vodka distilled from rye. Gives it a smoother body. On top of that, unlike alot of the Russian and Swedish "ultra-pure" vodkas, it's not excessively filtered. It's distilled for a fairly long time. I think it's distilled 4 times over. The distilling process mellows it out and make it smooth. It also strips a good deal of the water out which makes the alcohol really concentrated. So they blend it with water to get to a better proof rate somewhere south of gasoline.

It didn't get here to the states until 1996 but the distillery is using the same methods for something like 600 years. My grandmother has bottles of vodka from the distillery that are a few decades old celebrating a 50th anniversary. Since she used to go back to Poland to visit relatives on a regular basis, it was easy to get booze that we couldn't get here.

My favorite is Guiness.

However, that could change we I go to Germany for vacation in a few years. Guiness has long been my favorite, but accoriding to my wife who lived in Germany for a time - we don't see anything with respect to German beer as the "real stuff" is not exported to the US.

On a recent trip to Ireland I was surprised at the amount of Heiniken being sold. It was almost as common on tap as Guiness in the republic (Harp took its place in the North). Finding Heiniken generally disgusting in the US, I caved on night and had one on tap over there, and surprisingly it was pretty good. Nothing like the swill in a bottle you get here.

Where do you live?

If this was a "suggest new beer for Norm thread", answers might have been more towards around.

Some stuff that has been suggested is regional like the microbrews and even Yuengling is regional which is a good reason that alot of people don't know about it.

I live in Los Angeles. But my parents live in Virginia and I make it back there a few times a year. When I was living in Virginia, about a decade ago, I recall that Yuengling was very popular (its still my brother-n-law's beer of choice) and I swear that I recall seeing Rogue and even Blue Moon for sale at some point, though I could be mistaken.

You're right; I could have probably used a better title. However, I figured that there might not be too many Polkies living in SoCal -- maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I wanted to keep it as open as possible for future reference.

Even if there aren't a ton of people from here in that area, a bunch of us have been through the area or spent time there.

My personal local favorite is pretty much anything from Stone Brewing Company. We can't get it out here on the right coast but they have an awesome I.P.A. and their E.S.B. is quite good also. The Arrogant Bastard Ale will kick you in the teeth and if you like that sort of excessive hops thing, that's right up your alley!

You should also be able to get the Kona Brewing Company's offerings in SoCal. For them, again, their Firerock Pale Ale is their version of an India Pale Ale and it is light, clean and refreshing. Everything a Pale Ale should be. Also, the Longboard Lager is surprisingly light and goes well as a dinner beer. It matches well with damn near anything and is my beer of choice while in Hawaii.

You should also be able to get Maui Brewing Company's offerings out there too. They also have two excellent Pale Ales in the Maui Pale Ale and the Big Swell IPA. But there are three that stand out for me from them. First is the Red Cock Doppelbock which has an incredible finish and aftertaste that is sweet like candy. But the Doppelbock lager is a dark, heavy brew with smoky and fruity hops heavy flavors and aromas. I'm not usually a fan of Doppelbocks but I like that one.

They also have Hemp Man Brown Ale which is alot like other brown ales I have had but it's not as heavy. Lots of citrus flavors and it took some getting used to but it was a good beer for having with native Hawaiian dishes.

But the one that surprised me the most was Pau Hana Pilsner. If you like Pilsner Urquell, you'll like that one. As good as any I ever had from Europe or even the old German and Czech brewers in Milwaukee. Very good summer beer for sitting in the heat and watching the Phillies kick the crap out of the Dodgers! :)

Those are some suggestions that should get you started on some more local brews that aren't big, corporate giants.

And I'll tell you something about Yuengling. Every one whom I have had visit from the left coast or Hawaii have come out here and we go drinking with Yuengling. They all go back and start emailing me asking how they can get it shipped out there.

Libertyc

Jstas, much thanks for the additional recommendations. I have a follow-up question for you or any others who wish to weigh in: What sort of places do you guys go to find these specialty beers?

In L.A., most of our chain grocery stories (e.g. Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons) seem to have very limited selections (typical stuff ranging from Natural Light up the scale to Amstel Light) and even though we have Trader Joe's out here, their selection seems to be quite limited also, even if they carry some less known brews not available in the big supermarkets. Would I have better luck at a place like Whole Foods or something like that? (I'm not much of bar-hopper so I was hoping to find six-packs rather look for it out on the town).

Yuengling lager is half as good as Sam Adams Boston Lager. A fresh Boston Lager keg and proper pour is stunningly good.

Yuengling is KLH and Boston Lager is Polk Audio. Yuengling is Def Leopard to Sam Adam's Led Zeppelin.

Brooklyn Lager is very good. Long Trail Ale is even better.

On pale ale, see Sierra Nevada and Harpoon.

Local breweries often produce very good pale ales.

Norm,

You should have no problems finding good beer in SoCal. Green Flash Brewing Company is from San Diego (IIRC), you've got Sierra Nevada, Stone Brewing. You should also be able to get a lot of fresh stuff from Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho that we can't get on the east. Rogue is a damn fine brewery, as is the company that does Fat Tire.

The best beer bar I've ever been to was in San Francisco, called Toranadoes. Front and back of a page with Belgian beers in a font size similar to a newspaper. This is in addition to about 25 different tap handles.

Tecate is also a direct import from Mexico. It's not brewed under license like alot of other Mexican beers. It's imported through White Plains, NY though.

It used to be an independent from like the late 1800's I think it was? It was bought in 1955 by the same company that brews Dos Equis and a bunch of other beers that don't get exported to the States. They had a whole, detailed history on the website for it but it's all gone and "Under Construction" notice is up. Otherwise, I'd verify the names and such.

Tecate is one of my favorite imports and makes a GREAT summer beer! I also like it with spicy food. The light body and taste compliments a fiery fare well. Alot of people don't like it. It's like Rolling Rock in it's acquired taste status. Well, not so much anymore because Rolling Rock sucks now that Anheuser-Busch took brewing away from Latrobe and sent it to it's plants in Newark, NJ. I dunno what it is. Rolling Rock was an acquired tastes but it was never "bad", just different. It used alot of corn and rice in the recipe so it had a harsher taste reminiscent of a cheap, un-aged whiskey. Now, it just tastes and smells skunky all the time. At least Anheuser-Busch did one thing for the Rolling Rock brand and that was make it consistent, even if it is consistently bad.

Oh, I also heard that late in 2006, City Brewing Company purchased the Latrobe Brewing Company plant. City doesn't have any of it's own brands, at least none that are widely available outside of Wisconsin, it's just a contractor plant at the Latrobe location. So now, Samuel Adams beers are brewed there.

It didn't used to be though. I would hit a skunky one or two or sometimes a whole batch every so often but I drank it enough that I had many more good ones than bad ones. The pony bottles and cans tended to fare better than the 12 oz variety. Besides, it was a beer that wasn't a light beer and was always on the dollar specials at the local bars when I was in college.

I was always bewildered how people could like Heineken for this very reason. Rolling ROck tastes like ambrosia of the Gods compared to the skank-ass skunky taste of Heineken, yet everyone seems convinced it's awesome? I feel like there's Bose-level brainwashing going on there.

Looks like you have a good selection from Dogfish Head out there, nice!

I have not tried the black and blue yet, I see it was released in April. Will have to ask the beer guy if they can get some.

I'm pretty luck to live close to a Grocery store that has an incredible beer selection. They emphasize on craft brews and special order a lot of stuff.

I have yet to really find a dogfish beer that I don't like. Most are pretty strong, but they do a great job on masking the alcohol taste. Can't wait to try the Immort Ale tonight.

The next one looking forward to is the World Wide stout that comes out this fall. Had it last November and it is probably in my top 5 stouts.

I think the "orange peel taste" is what made me like the hoe. hehe. it's relaxing after you've down several Heinies (since apart from Tiger beer, that's the most sold beer in places where I work) then all of a sudden glance at the beer list and see a hoe. the change in taste is such a welcome treat... for me. hehe.

OK, had an Anchor Steam which I haven't had in a while and honestly, it reminded me alot of Yuengling. So for those of you left coasters that never tried a Yuengling, Anchor Steam's lager is very similar. Has more of a manufacturer taste if you could call it that. Dunno why.

For those that recommended Fat Tire, I had the Amber brew tonight and was quite pleased. Best beer I ever had? No, not at all but it was very good and in the top 10 of beers I've had. Kinda hoppy with a weird, almost charcoal after taste but smooth texture and presentation and easy going down. Strong too. Up there with the strength of the brews from Stone Brewing Company.

Had a couple in Vermont over the weekend. But don't go looking for them outside of the area, you are not likely to find them.

First up, Long Trail Ale. This is a simple brew and while Long Trail has a pretty wide selection of brews, this is simple and just flat out good. It's smooth, finishes clean and has the perfect amount of hops. No weird fruity aromas or after tastes either. It has a bit of a floral aroma but it doesn't translate to taste. So in essence, as with many craft beers from brewers whose brewmasters think they know what they are doing but in reality don't have a clue, this one is done right and it doesn't taste like you are drinking the runoff from a compost pile. But seriously, if you can find them, Long Trail is totally worth whatever it costs. By far one of my favorites from the Vermont brewers.

http://www.longtrail.com/home.html

The other one is Switchback. These guys are increasing the distro but still, pretty much only local. They are out of Burlington, VT and most of the brews are available in bars and restaurants. They bottle but it's damn near impossible to find. However, the Switchback Ale is my favorite. It's clean and light enough that it can go with any meal or just pounding them back watching a baseball game on the back deck on a pleasant Saturday afternoon in late August/Early September (like what I was doing last Saturday!). Again, like the Long Trail, hopped perfectly and finishes very clean with no goofy citrus flavors or anything. Actually, the after tastes kind of remind me of a Philly soft pretzel and that's not a bad thing. So if you're in the area up there, grab a big bacon cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, onions and peppers and a Switchback Ale and go to town!

They ain't got a website but they are on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/switchback.brewing?_fb_noscript=1

Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale, Rogue is pretty good, Chimay is an excellent choice as well. I love Corsendonk and a good Framboise Lambic on certain occassions. Shiner Bock gets my vote for best bang for the buck with Stone Brewery coming in a close second.

That's a good one.

I'm just giddy with excitement this time of year!! :D

I love going to BevMo and picking up 4 six packs- all different Oktoberfest, then just have an Oktoberfest beer orgy...;)

Spaten's Oktoberfest is good too.

There's a local San Diego brewery called Karl Strauss which has another good Oktoberfest brew....

Any other Oktoberfests folks like???

I agree; very good point..:D

I actually do not like ice in my beer. However, I find that if I pour at an angle for most of the beer and finish with a center pour, it minimizes the ice floaters.

Grabbed some of that Noble Pils from Sam Adams the other day. I grabbed a 6 pack last night too.

It's better out of the tap. The bottle hurts it but if you pour it in to a glass, it gets close to the tap. I found I had to put a decent head of foam on it to get it right.

Overall, it's a slightly bitter brew. It's heavy too. Heavier than I expected a Pilsner to be. But it has a sweet and sour type of deal going on and leaning to the sour side with the citrus hints. The after taste is clean and fresh, very earthy and sweet, like a whole grain bread. The after taste lingers too and it's a good thing. It's easy to drink but it's a fairly strong brew too.

I thought at first it would have an overpowering hops flavor to it. I can't do more than 1 or 2 pints of really hoppy beer. Starts making me sick after a while. This has a strong hop flavor to it but it mellows out quickly. I don't think it's much of a spring brew though. More suitable to the crisp autumn weather. Either way, give it a try. The liquor store guy told me it's been flying off the shelves around here so get it while you can. I got lucky and my favorite dive bar has it on tap.

Man! This hasn't been updated since February!

Grabbed a 6 pack for a "try and see".

This is from Atlantic Brewing Company out of Bar Harbor, Maine.

It's called "Bar Harbor Real Ale".

This is so dark it's almost a stout. Not real hoppy. Chocolaty though. Finishes with a hoppy flavor though. It's light too. Lighter than I expected. It's creamy and supports a good head. I like it! I dunno how much of a regular brew it is but if you can get it near you, pick it up. It was worth the $9 for the 6-pack.

OK, I'm headed back to Virginia in the next couple of weeks and I can't wait to get my fill of Legend Brown Ale. I believe its brewed in Richmond, VA.

The Quilter's Irish Death can truly be awesome. A few years back at one of the Seattle area beer fests it was my favorite out of some 25+ I tasted (luckily I wasn't driving home that evening!). Lately it seems their quality can be a little uneven, and I'm sure it doesn't get much if any distribution outside the PNW.

My favorite in wide availability would have to be Gordon from Oskar Blues. Man, that stuff is good. I don't even know exactly what style it's supposed to be. It just says "Big. Red. Sticky." on the side of the can. I would call it an imperial IPA, but OB just started selling a real IIPA called Gubna in this neck of the woods. That stuff is truly gawd awful. Just nasty!

Thought I'd dig this up from the dead.

Currently watching "American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior" and sipping on a Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA.

<object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uf-Q2okZoSI&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uf-Q2okZoSI&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

It's good stuff. Very strong hop flavor but it's balanced. It has a definitive hoppy aroma to it, almost flowery. Some earthy smells too like what a freshly harvested wheat field smells like. Yes, I have smelled that before. Has a peaty smell to it, almost like grass but more nutty. The taste is more chocolaty which is a bit odd for an I.P.A. but, you know what? It works. The hop flavor comes out and finishes as well as hanging around in the after taste. The chocolate comes from the malt and it's there but it's more like a baker's chocolate with a more bitter taste.

Either way, the taste isn't obscenely bitter and if you like hops, this is a good one. Worth a try if you can get it. It's honestly, a very good American interpretation of a classically English brew. I've given it to friends from beer snob countries like Germany and Belgium and they were all impressed with it and seek it out now when they are here for a visit. If you think Americans can't make beer then stick this one in your snoot and try it. It'll change your opinion.

BTW, dunno what that video is about but it was on Dogfish Head's website when I brought up the product page for the beer. I'll watch it later.

Oh yeah they use orange peel. Hell, every other belgian beer in existence breaks the manlaw in that case. I think the fruit ban should be reserved for girly fruits like watermelon, raspberry, and apricot. Right now I'm drinking a New Belgium Sahti, which is brewed with juniper berries. I wouldn't say it's a favorite, but it's definitely not a girlie beer (7.2% and hoppy).
