I would have to take:
Chris Squire - Yes
John Entwistle - The Who
Both wield them as well as almost any lead guitarist.

Duh,
John Paul Jones is the most underrated bassist in history, IMO. With Jimmy Page and Robert Plant to focus on JPJ tends to get lost in the mix. After listening to several bootlegs where JPJ playing is emphasized he is just one of the most talented and creative bass players I've heard.
Check out Tal Wilkenfeld a smallish female from Australia who in her 20's is a fantastic bass player. Most recently she has been touring with Jeff Beck and the set he plays at the most recent Eric Clapton Guitar Festival (DVD) she is smoking hot!!!! She just started playing bass a few years ago if she keeps up at this pace she will be a legend. Jeff Beck doesn't just play with any old musician.

Evan Sienfeld---doesn't really impress me at all especially after seeing the reality show Super Group. He's not bad just nothing special IMO.

John Entwistle: His ability to keep the rhythm while Keith Moon was going beserk is testament alone to his abilities.
Stanley Clark: Anybody remember "School Days"?

John Entwistle was definitely the man. He did a solo during 5:15 when I saw them doing Quadrophenia that blew my mind.
Geddy Lee's no slouch either.

Victor Wooten is one of my favorites
I don't believe it took 27 posts before someone mentioned him. Either keeping up with Bela Fleck or playing solo, he's absolutley amazing.
What, everyone's forgotten about Jack Casady? No other human can play like he can.
I've never seen a tighter combo of guitar and bass then when he plays with Jourma in Hot Tuna.
I'll add 2:
Willie Dixon
Charles Mingus
Both incredible bass players and composers.
Music Joe

Willie Dixon - Already mentioned
Jack Bruce - Already mentioned
James Jamerson - Motown Funk Brothers Bassist
Bootsy Collins - Bassist for James Brown in the 60's
Larry Graham jr. - Bassist for Sly & the Family Stone, he may be the first to adopt the "slap" style!
David Hood - Muscle Shoals Fame Studio Bassist played on numerous Atlantic Records hits, this guy was GREAT!

While I've been going through the lists I've noticed some missing folk. I was wondering if the whole is greater than the sum of the parts?
Paul McCartney - Beatles
Bill Wyman - Rolling Stones
Sting - Police
Adam Clayton - U2
Thoughts?

Most if not all of my favorites were mentioned, but since Jaco was only mentioned once, I'll throw his name in the hat again
Jaco Pastorius, partucularly with the Word of Mouth big band and Weather Report.
however, If I had to pick any bassist in any all star band, it would be Nathan East, that guy could blend in and play with a pack of wild frikkin Hyena's and he would make it sound right :p

I would say speaking as a bassist myself some of my favorites for all different reasons would be:
Victor Wooten - He's just all around amazing
Flea - His rock style bass playing is very unique and great
Paul McCartney - I just like his simplicity and all around solid playing
And i wish i could remember his name, but the bassist from Dream Theater is quite amazing as well.....I don't care for they're singer, but musically they are great!

It's been mentioned twice, but Les Claypool. Completely his own style and self taught...Been a fan of his since 1992 and named my cat after his first band. It doesn't hurt that I really love the music he makes in general. Primus is one of my favorite bands.

Ya know, I was listening to a couple of Morphine CDs earlier today and realized that the late Mark Sandman might be worthy of this list of outstanding bassists. If you have never listened to Morphine, you are missing out on a very interesting mix of jazz and blues which feature Mark doing vocals and playing a 2 string slide bass most of the time. Its also one of the few bands that use a sax in a way that doesn't come off cheezy.
