Well made an impulse buy on fleabay and picked up a hk247 for 215.00.
How will this power my rti10's and surrounds. Will I see any improvement over my onkyo cheapy?
What should I expect now. Will the 10's be warmer? Do the set up mic do anything special?
Ron where are you buddy, you always said that the HK is good.
This one has the pre-outs so I can now get amps.

I have an HK-245 (basically same specs as 247) and it's a great receiver. Does sound a touch warmer than Onkyo's I've tried. That said it's still not enough to drive the RTi10s. To make those babies sing you need an external amp. I have an onkyo M282 (100wpc) that I threw on the bass terminals of the RTi10s and WOW did it make a difference.
I later upgraded to an Emotiva LPA-5...it sounds fantastic with my RTi10/6/CSI5 setup. I really have no use for that onkyo...I should probably sell it but I barely used it for a month lol.
But I digress...the HK247 will sound better than your onkyo but once you get an amp your whole world will change. You don't even need a 5 channel...just a 2 channel to throw on the bass terminals of the RTi10s will do you right.
Cheers

I used to run an Onkyo 605 with my RTis and found the combo to be too bright. Replaced it with the HK 247 and found it to be a good match for the RTis. I ran RTi8 mains though and they're not a difficult load to handle. You're gonna need a beefy amp to really make the 10s sing

Must get an amp to push those 10's. The HK was a great get!!

I think you're going to like it alot in comparison. You'll hear it right away. As others have said, you'll also get another kick when you a separate amp on them. Congrats on a great price.

I just hope for now that the HK will push the 10's just as loud as the onkyo I have now. Its plenty loud for me as of now but I do hear the brightness sometimes on various materials.
I got it direct from HK via fleabay. Didn't think I would win with such a low bid. Now comes the suggestions for the amp. I would like to have an amp that covers all 7 speakers. Or sould I buy seperate amps? Whats the con's and pro's?

Disregard the power specs on the HK...up to a point. It's got more balls than the little Onk and you'll hear it immediately. However, it won't take them to the absolute top end of their volume capability. I doubt you'd be able to stay in the room anyway. You should be able to get 100dbs + in most rooms without clipping. I wouldn't try for 105 without a sub though.
The best deal for a $/watt right now for a new amp is the Emotiva XPA-5. That would cover 5 channels letting the AVR handle the back surrounds. The pros of a multichannel are pretty obvious. All in one box. All channels being driven by an amp of identical characteristics, etc. I use multiple 2 channel amps because I aquired them over time fairly cheaply. Started with an Audiosource Amp One, then a Carver, then A/Bd Adcom and Luxman before deciding which had the most synergy. The negative is rack space, but I had it for 3 smaller form factor amps rather than one big honking multi that weighs 80lbs.
It's up to you buddy, there's a case to be made either way.

Ron, what about the LPA-1, do you think it would be an improvement over the 50 watts per channel of the avr-247? I think someone said that you only get a 3db improvement when you double the wattage.

I think someone said that you only get a 3db improvement when you double the wattage.I'd say most probably :D. There's a few here and many elsewhere that love that amp. I'm sure it will be cleaner and give you some headroom. I think Early B had both Emos for awhile, he can probably tell you the difference. The only negative I've read was from Kex, who hasn't been around in awhile...who couldn't tell the difference between the LMC/LPA 1 and his HK 147 driving his RT55s. Generally, folks notice amps and pres right away if there speakers are going to improve. Certainly, it could have just been him.

I still have to finish off the basement theater so I will invest in that when its complete. As long as the 247 give me the same as the onk then I will be happy. It was an impulse buy but then again this is all impulsive lol. I did need the option to upgrade to an amp which the 247 gives. I did read about all the bugs with the amp but I see ways around it by not using it for video and the fact that I don't have 1080p right now. I will get a PS3 in the future and will by pass the amp but use it for audio as I see it can be done. But if its a real problem I hope that HK would have solved that problem by then or it may have to be sent in for the proper repair by them.
I think it will have a better sound as I read that most people think that HK gives a more laid back sound that will tame the 10's. I also have fxi3's to put in the mix. Right now they are in storage waiting for the theater to be built. I think its a modest set up and I will be done with this whole quest.
