I just received an email from another member with this link warning about the new Doors LP Box set and thought I'd pass it along.
http://messageboard.thedoors.com/showthread.php?t=20065
I'm checking mine out tonight.

A thorough visual inspection revealed no issues with my set. I am going to treat each record and play them over the next couple of days to make sure there is no unseen damage to in the grooves.

Hey Joe, I would request a replacement no matter what; even if you can't find anything, why take a risk?

On your advice Rico, I emailed Dr. Rhino and the elusivedisc.com as to what measures I need to take to get a proper replacement.
Thanks Bro.

Joe,
I opened my Doors Box over the weekend. All appears well, but I really did not inspect it closely. I was bowled over by the sonics!! My impression so far is that it was masterfully engineered. Larry

Joe,
I would not treat the records, once you do they may be yours for good.

Ted I wrote to both Rhino and elusivedisc.com and they have no problem with it. Besides, if I can't treat them they don't get played on my TT.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Joe,
You are truly obsessed. There is no cure yet on the horizon for AMOD....analog madness obsessive disorder....:D:D Maybe that's a good thing.

I don't want all the mold release compounds and factory grime getting all over my platter and stylus. The junk gets welded on and with the downforce of the Clamp it embeds in the delrin platter.
So I'm obsessive . . . that's is truely no secret!:D

Hey Joe,
Four of my covers need to be replaced as they have marks from shipping. It would have been nice if they were individually wrapped so they didn't rub during shipping.
I'm not sure if I will be playing mine until the new TT arrives.
Let me know what you think of the sonic characteristics.

I've listened critically to most of this box set now. Verdict: 6 Stars!!!!! The clarity and depth of this recording are incredible. I have long been a fan of Bernie Grundman's recording engineering genius. This is a must for auditioning on SDA's. :) Joe? Have you played Strange Days yet?

I got mine from Acoustic Sounds, but Elusive Disc has them as well, but I think the supply is running out as they pressed only 12,500.:(:(

Yes, I listened to it tonight. Although I felt the title track was recorded a bit too much on the hot side, the rest of the LP was breathtaking, especially, "When the Music's Over."
I wasn't that impressed with the first album, "The Doors." Although I do realize how hard it is to make an image out of a master tape that has two instruments coming from one channel, two from the other, and then image the vocals in between. The first track sounded muddy but the rest was as you say, "incredible clarity and depth."

I have the DCC Steve Hoffman gold CDs of the Doors first two albums and I was wondering if anyone here has compared them to the boxed set? The DCC cds are by far the best sounding cds I've heard of these two albums..any thoughts?
Edit: Analog97 thanks for the heads up!
Where would one go to buy this set???????
Amazon has the box set for a lower price than others.
OK guys, after hearing your descriptions, I guess I will play these sooner rather than later. I might wait for the periphery ring clamp to arrive first so I can retrieve the most from the LPs.
NOTE
If you have the box set and don't have any problems, please look at the end of the first post in the linked thread. All purchasers of the box set can get a 45 of 'Light My Fire' sent to them IF you contact Rhino.
Additionally, Rhino is making a limited edition 7-inch vinyl "Light My Fire" single (mono/stereo) which we will supply as a free gift to all purchasers of the Doors Box Set who contact Dr. Rhino or www.thedoors.com.

Someone tell Dr. Rhino, when you complain about his vinyl problems, to put The Doors out on SACD. No warps, no groove damage, no rubbed covers, no pops or ticks and better sound to boot. :D

One word . . . WOW!!!
This is one of the best re-engineering and mixing jobs I've ever heard on vinyl. I had goose-bumps running up and down.
The seamless holographic – 3 dimensional sense of spaciousness was absolutely startling. We got the sense that we were on stage with them with Morrison 9’ in front of us, in the middle and each instrument could be picked out clearly in the sound field. The soundstage was huge and the depth perception was as much as the drummer being 7’ behind Morrison (16' from us) on most songs and slightly elevated.
In "Not to Touch the Earth" the bass player started out his solo in the middle of the stage and then you can hear him move to the left to give way to Morrison.
The "Unknown Soldier" was incredible. In the marching passage you could hear the firing squad parade start marching far to the left and march across the stage to slightly right of center and the soldiers spread out in front of you. When the rifles fired you could hear what sounded like five rifles going off from the left speaker to the right seamlessly.
This is so far the best record of the first three. It is truely breathtaking even if you don't like The Doors, you'll appreciate the magnificant sonics.
Man I can’t wait to get to the others. Can you imagine what “L A Woman” is going to sound like?

Joe, you are correct on all counts. Stunning is a word I would use for this recording masterpiece. It's interesting to note that Bernie Grundman was the original recording engineer on "Waiting for the Sun". It stands to reason that better techniques available today by Bernie Grundman, when he re-did his original magnificent recording would result in another improvement. I went back to the original and played it for my comparison. Wowee! What a difference!! In addition to what you so accurately described is the addition of an extra bass octave the engineers deiscuss in the insert in the box. Oh, yeah... me thinks you will enjoy "LA Woman"!! :):)

Don't get me wrong, I love SACD too but it can never sound as natural as vinyl.

You have to admit, however, SACD has a weighter sound to music where vinyl sounds more open and airy.

I have box 3470. All the LPs have been cleaned and I started to listen to them yesterday. Listened to two and both have significant surface noise. What a big dissapointment!

This was clearly audible along with all the snap, crackle and pop!
I am not amused. Just about all the used records I have play better than the two noted above.

Wowee! Something is wrong. Mine are about as good as it gets. Could something be awry with your system? What fluids did you wash them with? Did you use a RCM? Is the stylus clean? If it's definitely shown to be the LP's, then you understandably should not be a happy camper and get $$ back or a new set. Maybe just play a record without washing and see?:confused::confused::confused:

Four of my covers need replacing. When I sent a message to Rhino, I also asked if I needed to check the LPs as there have been reports of LPs with lots of surface noise. They suggested I check each record due to the complaints.
All were cleaned on the 16.5 with Tergitol and Vinyl-Zeme, then rinsed with ultra pure water just like the countless others before. A new 180g copy of Jazz At the Pawnshop cleaned up wonderfully and sounds amazing; about 2-3 pops etc. per side.
Its not the system!
I am glad yours are fine.
I will go through the remaining LPs and contact Rhino again ...

You convinced me!! I think you should be really ticked off. Only time will tell to see what percentage of the pressings were bad. I did not hear anything about surface noise complaints until your report. Geez. What a shame!! :(:(

John, Larry, I had very minor surface noise from time to time and I attributed it to dust. When I did a sweep again the surface noise was not present. John Rhino will replaced anything not up to snuff including the LPs, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrive once reported.

Sonics are off the charts awesome, however, the LP is a mess.
It is warped and has something burned into it on both sides. It is very visible on the runout grooves. It looks like the multi-colored holograph water marks used on driver's licenses and the such.
I tried removing it with a chemical well known for removing mold release compounds and factory grunge but that didn't remove it neither did the rest of my cleaning routine. There was lots of surface noise and mucho pops and ticks.
I have 00816/12500. Four LPs and jackets are being replaced. I also asked to have the literature replaced due to wear marks on the front.
