View Full Version : Surround Speaker Placement

I've recently finished everything for the audio part of my home entertainment centre. . . I've been buying things seperately... and even made my surround speakers. Despite what lots of people say about making their own speakers, they sound really really good. They have 10" 250w pyramid originals, 40-25k HZ, and the tweeters are your radioshack special.
Now my question.. i've read that rear surround speakers should be placed at ear level, pointed TOWARDs the listener.. the speakers are pretty large and heavy though.. (about 2 1/2 feet tall) well, there not huge but I havent seen stands or anything for these type of speakers
im not sure where i should place them.. should i make a type of cabinet that they can sit on. (easy enough. . . carpentry is a hobby) or tilt them up towards the listener.. im not sure what to do.. if anyone doesnt know what im talking about.. which im sure you dont.. ill post some pics of my problem if you need them..

if your a carpenter, id recomend, build two identical shelves, put them directly behind u or directly beside u
wolves10
12-28-2002, 08:52 PM
ok.
that i can do, but once they are on the cabinet thing, which direction should they be aimed?
(they would have to be directly beside me..room isnt big enough to have anything behind the couch)
...should they be blasting right towards me, or towards the front of the room.. i've actually seen both of these ways done in friend's home theatres but i'm not sure which way to actually do it.
thanks

im telling ya, just put them on the side walls - or u could try infront of u...before u put the shelves up, place the speaker on various spots on the wall to see which sounds best to u..
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-28-2002, 09:21 PM
I use to have my surrounds in front, if u have a small room - u wont notice the difference
ohh yeah, welcome to the forum, beware its addictive
wolves10
12-28-2002, 09:57 PM
oh theres plenty of room to place the speakers on either side of the couch... they dont need to be in front of me..
is that what you mean?
you still havent really answered which way the speaker should be pointed.. oh.. see what sounds best..
hmm.. what direction are the speakers (rear surrounds) aimed in the majority of home theatres? like towards the tv, straight forward, or straight toward the listener
and mount them on the walls? hmm i dont think that will work. i was thinking more along the lines of making an actual cabinet thing.. like a stand.. yeah.. a stand :S
thanks for the welcome. . . and yeah i can see how i just might be here often.
thanks for your responses too :D

If you have plenty of room on each side of the room, build stands - and put them there..lol! Then if it dont sound right, slowly move them along the wall until u get them to sound right...(to your ears)
My surrounds, just fire towards the mains, but my room is so small - i wish i had them firing towards each other on the side walls...In other words, towards the front of the room or to the listener (whatever sounds better to you. yeah, this place is fun - lots of 'Wise' guys here..lmao! no problem
ohh yeah, to see how others have theirs setup, look at the system showcase for a couple of examples

mine are mounted to the ceiling, i like the sound better than ear level because the sound is above u and it really makes it all sound around u, above u and so on

The surround speakers (either Side or Rear) should NOT be pointed directly at the listening position. Keep in mind that sound from the surround speakers are basically for effects and ambience. Try WWW.Dolby.com for more info or even this link;
http://www.polkaudio.com/home/faqad/advice.php?article=placement
A neat little trick is to use a couple of 6' step ladders as temporary stands and try different locations to see which sound best to you.

listen to the old guy, i agree -- all the way wit em, hey mid fart, so your saying it bad to tie a string to each top of your speaker, hang them from ur head and let the drivers fire into ur ears? DANG! i knew that was a bad idea....well id say this, just skip all the ear level crap - and mount them suckers on the top of the wall and get it over with..lol! their out of everyone's way and they make ur entire soundstage sound really effin weird

Sid,
Don't forget your amazing "Belt-o-Subs" and your back pack mounted "Wall of Amps" for that real 3D effect!
Don't make me get the Stun Gun again!!
I'm warning ya!!!
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-28-2002, 11:28 PM
LOL! belt-of-subs....lmao! I decided not to do that...;), but i might buy me another M&K later on down the road...
Wall-Of-Amps...well dang, i done purchased one, I got 2 more to go....lol!
******PLZ NOT THE STUN GUN*********! I PROMISE TO BE GOOD! LOL!
To go ahead and tell ya my future purchases.....

thanks guys for all your help.. but as much as i would want to mount these on the wall above everything.. there pretty big... i think ill go with the front firing placement.. towards the front spkrs.
hmm... just another question that comes to mind. how much of a difference would it make if these speakers were on stands, at ear level.. or just sitting on the ground... not at ear level... is it really noticable? like.. worth building stands to get these things off the ground a bit? thanks
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 01:01 AM
it'll sound like s***! lol, the bass will over power the speakers, and treble will be flat - from what I have heard with other speakers
wolves10
12-29-2002, 01:09 AM
hmm thats no good. heh.. i guess i need them stands...
oh and i've been reading up on www.dolby.com and.. from the little pictures it looks like the speakers are aimed directly at the listener.. heres a few examples
http://dolby.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/dolby.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=x6jNgXxg&p_lva=&p_faqid=135&p_created=1013441850&p_sp=cF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTcxJnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=
(look at the pictures at the bottom)
--and yeah i cant find any more little pictures.. :D
im now pretty confused..
aimed towards the listener?
aimed toward the ceiling?
aimed toward the floor?
aimed toward the tv?
aimed toward the back of the room?
aimed toward the window?
aimed toward the cat?
aimed toward the stain in the carpet?
aimed toward the centre of the room?
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D that was fun
but still.. where should these rear surrounds be aimed (on a stand which yet have to be made).. ear level... bleh.
thanks

wolves10, I try not to damge people - much. But your $150 Panasonic reciever won't "move" those 10" 250w pyramid originals which are probably 4 ohm anyway. The distortion and actual power on the rear channels of that reciever would make a bose cube sound even worse. Sorry but huge waste of money man. You say u made 4 of these things, are you using the other two as mains? Honestly I am not being mean just want to HELP.
A very cheap set of satillite spreakers would have done a fine job for ya. Hope you are not compinsating for lack of bass responce because a better sub would have fixed that problem. Anyway - hope ya find what your looking for.

the wall-paper was picked out by me.....7 years ago! the posters and junk were picked out by me.....if u want to take the wallpaper down, then reconnect my shelves, then all my posters back up (before u do all that repaint my room), be my guest, and go right ahead and brake a leg!

first of all making these speakers was damn cheap.. had all the materials already.. someone gave me the speakers and stuff, all i needed to do was make them and put it all together...
i thought the same thing your thinkin right now, but thought i didnt have much to loose, so i made them, and bought the reciever.. they sounded pretty damn nice and i impressed myself a LOT.. so anyway, i invested in the subwoofer.. which btw, is a 200w dual 5 1/2"
twas 299$.. also sounds really good.. i mean.. it shakes my house..
and about "not moving" the pyramids.. i ripped the suspension in my 150w pyramid (the rears are 150, but they can go lower than the mains) im lucky i had a spare.. (that was an accident btw, turned on music while reciever was at 0db)
and right now, when i turn it up.. i should send you a movie on how much they "dont move"...
either you have an explanation for this, or you think im lying.. but either way ive gotten good out of my money.. havent noticed any problems or anything
oh, and when ive got it cranked up.. theres little to no distortion
MxStYlEpOlKmAn

old fart over there is mixed up - if u have a 7.1 setup, u want di/bi-pole on the sides, and regular speakers in the back - but u want the surrounds, in my opinion firing at you if they were ear level, then calibrate it where u dont hear it as much! but I just skipped all that junk, and hung them on the wall! lol! Just build stands, then connect the stands on the walls (make sure there is a 1/4 inch strip higher than the floor of the stand so the speaker dosnt vibrate off) and hang it at the ceiling, im telling ya - it'll skip all the confusion and frustration..

haha i see...
well.. mine doesnt sound fine it sounds great :P
but yeah thats weird.. did you have it cranked up to a crazy volume or anything?
ok.. ill do that then will have to make some stands or something..
82.50? hmm well this sub was 299 USD which makes it like 500CND maybe theres a difference there

speaking of shelves, i got to get a equipment rack made for my adcom....i have NO where to put it....unless it'll fit on my current shelf.....BACK TO THE DRAWING board

my sub is an M&K, i had it half way in volume, -33.00 on receiver playing good ol eminem, and his POS recording FINALLY kicked in
my subwoofer is also 14 years old...

oh.. just reading at
http://www.polkaudio.com/home/faqad/advice.php?article=placement
looks like you were right.. preferably have speakers mounted on the walls, aimed directly towards eachother, over the listeners heads.. well, i cant mount on the walls, and i dont think im willing to make a stand 4-5-6 ft high.. so i guess ear level, or just above will do....
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:12 AM
yeah.. i dont have a TV for this audio setup yet, but when i do i dont think the stand that comes with the tv im looking at will be big enough to house all my audio equiptment.. here comes another project...
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:13 AM
lol, i really need sleep -- If your really desperate, order wall mounts, that can hold the weight of ur speakers...newayz im bored -- and speaking of a board, i just got back from the drawing board, and heres what i came up with....
well dang, i just noticed i messed up on some angles..
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:17 AM
i designed a home theatre/desk unit -- cut the desk off and the HT center is huge, add shelves to the sides...and top...etc
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:19 AM
oh and heres a picture of my speakers...
the red, smaller ones are my rear speakers
red suspension 150 w - woofer 30hz - 4khz
dome tweeters.. im really not sure what these are, when i had them given to me, no box, nothing.. all i know is that they've stood up pretty well at high volumes for clarity and stuff
purple suspension 250w - woofer 50hz - 4khz
tweeters 4khz - 20khz (i think.. no box but it says on the back of the tweeter.. haven't seen it in a while.. its around there somewhere)
subwoofer
200W Active 20hz - 200hz
centre
CSi30 look at polkaudio.com if interested
--seems like a pretty mixed and matched setup.. but thats becasue i got the drivers and crossovers for the surrounds for free.. so i constructed the cases themselves with some wood lying around
tell me what you think
p.s i whited out the background so you couldnt see my wall paper :D:P > MxStYlEpOlKmAn

wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:27 AM
jenson cabs and drivers eh? really.. when i made them i wasnt really following any templates.. just following the basic guidelines (what guidelines) of an oversized bookshelf speaker.
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:29 AM
well as long as they dont sound like jensen, ur doing good...
i have a 25 inch tv on mine...works fine - has atleast another 10 inches to spair or so....
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:30 AM
hmm i see.. you ever followed your plans and built anything? prolly wouldnt be half bad.

im also going to have to think up somthing for these stands.. what you recomend for those speakers (the ones with red woofers)

oh yeah.. i see.. all one piece i saw that drawing a bit earlier.. thats really neat.. your room must be a pretty decent size for all that..
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:35 AM
yeah.. i had sort of the same problem with my pyramids.. not as bad as you make it seem though.. but anyway thank god for my adjustible crossover in the case.

12-29-2002, 02:35 AM
nope, 11 by 11 - 6 by 6 walking space, the desk is there to stay until i move out and have to move it - it weighs around 200 pounds, and stretches 6 feet across the wall, and 3.5 feet the other way...its big
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:37 AM
yeah i almost bought a pair of jensen speakers to just have a speaker to play loud and not care how it sounded or if it blew....lol! they had HUGE speakers for only 130 a pair
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:37 AM
yeah thats big..
i hate your mouse, btw..
do you have 5.1 in there?or what..
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:38 AM
5.1, 7.1 if i overdrive my amps, i love my mouse - best i have ever had, no problems and its really easy to operate after i get use to it...my subwoofer is....
if i were to move my surrounds to the front again, id have a wall of sound

MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:54 AM
and speaking of building speakers
i designed a pair of speakers that are ver unique, i wont say why...but they just are...lol
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:55 AM
yeah.. im going to have to build something...
how high you suggest i build it??
then with the front channels.. i think ill just get some nice black rubber doorstops and aim them up a little bit..
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:56 AM
yeah.. those look actually pretty nice.. if you could get that off the drawing board.... hmmmmm
mine are just pretty simple.. i didnt really know how long to make my port though... right now its around 4-5 inches back
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:56 AM
id just build em, then get someone to hold them up for u...sit down in the listening area, and tell them to keep highering/lowering them till the sound suits u....
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 02:58 AM
well the speaker i designed, i picked out every thing itd need, i have everything itd need down in my computer drivers, components, pieces -etc...the only thing that seperates it from the rest is the fact that the speaker is technically split in half, it has two crossovers - and it would take a 4 channel amp to run a pair...lol
wolves10
12-29-2002, 02:59 AM
yeah thats a pretty ok idea.. but right now my rears dont really have that much volume coming out of them.. im just using pro logic with the pc hooked up to the reciever
F1nut
12-29-2002, 03:00 AM
SiD,
You might think about going to work for Polk......when you're old enough. Interesting speaker design!
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 03:00 AM
run 5 channel stereo when listening to see which is better for u...thats what i'd suggest
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 03:01 AM
thank ya f1!
i would explain the entire design...but sure...*that would take ALLLLLLLL the fun out of it....*
wolves10
12-29-2002, 03:02 AM
yeah...i was thinking that too
yeah.. and you should work for polk.. certainly is interesting..
when i do this though what should i mostly be looking for in the sound..
just clarity, and balance with the other speakers? or what.
F1nut
12-29-2002, 03:03 AM
Build them and see what you think, then tell us. I'd like to know.
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 03:03 AM
actually run it in pro logic -- if u hear the surrounds more than the mains, THEIR toooooooooooooooooo loud...turn the surrounds down, try again. If they blend, u hit the jack pot
F1nut
12-29-2002, 03:04 AM
Seamless blend is what you're looking for.
MxStYlEpOlKmAn
12-29-2002, 03:04 AM
can i have 800 dollars f1? thats how much itd cost with mid class drivers, when i become a millionare, ill build them with vifa tweeters, focal drivers, and some reallllllll good crossovers, the design in it self is weird, but awesome - it'll get rid of everyone's WAT issues...
wolves10
12-29-2002, 03:04 AM
oh for sure.. right now.. i dont even notice the surrounds are there.. but polk says.. you dont WANT the rears to attract ANY attention to themselves as to being producers of sound

wolves10, you and the 13 year old Mxst need to get a room or call eachother. Makes me wonder how old u are?????
I was trying to help u out. Believe me that little reciever you have is putting out a distorted wattage. Look at the (thd) on the rear channels. I bet it is a least 1%. And if you are blowing 10" surround speakers. You have a huge problem. First of all your reciever is not capable of that and second if it was your ears would be bleeding. You sound as silly as the 13 year old. Many of us have good knowledge on this forum and some serious Polk sound. Don't belittle yourself. Ya I looked up your subwoofer and it wasn't worth bagging on you again. You paid way to much for two Panny 5' woofers ($300). That is embarrassing man. Polk forum - think about it. You want to see my sub - OK
Buy some Polks and get your knowledge on.
wolves10
12-29-2002, 07:44 PM
whatever it doesnt matter what you say because when it comes down to it... all that matters is how it sounds.
and you can't just judge them by what i say. espescially if you've never heard them
i didnt blow the rears i blew the fronts. thats when they were the 150ws blah
no i didnt want to see your sub
and youd be glad to know i paid 99$ canadian for the sub.
scottvamp
12-29-2002, 07:50 PM
Canadian's usually pay more for audio equipment. Sooo that sub in the USA went for $50 - sweet buy - . I not judgeing - it is just common sence. So all you have is a Polk center that is with four ratshack project speakers. OK - Very Nice.

people on this forum have alot of problems with people under 14 for some reason...do u think everyone under 14 is stupid or something?
wolves10
12-29-2002, 08:25 PM
yeah no kiddin age doesnt matter... theres some incredible geniuses out there. look at gauss he discovered that math thing and he was only 6
scottvamp you really shouldnt talk so much stuff about things you dont know about
heres the reason it was 99 dollars
http://www.futureshop.com/ accidently marked the price too low.. my freind told me about it, he got an MD player for 70 bucks.. a whole lot of items were marked down accidently and my sub happened to be one of them
plus you saw yourself.. 299 USD
-thats their thing.. they will give you the price that they mark. so i printed it out and went to buy it.
i dont see why you think just becasue somethings cheap that its junk it really isnt true..
having said that.. im not saying there isnt junk out there..

Hey now! let's not get on that dead horse again...I'm tellin' ya I'll get the stun gun out.
Next thing ya know this guy is gonna say that the other guy said this about that and that ain't what was said cuz what he meant was something that was different but nobody took the time to read it right so the other guy showes up and piss in your ear and tries to tell ya thats it raining, but the suns out so you know that he's full of crap, meanwhile Micah's gettin all pissed cuz of the nude pictures of him are shown up on the forum....It just gets worse from here...really!

lol......Ol' Frank
i dont think i am the only person that thinks this...but the psw1200 or whatever has got to be one of the ugliest subs i have seen, now whether it sounds good or not...i dunno

Mx, this is what I am talking about, u are making an ass out of yourself. I do not have a problem with your age - its your maturity man. The 1200 is the mother of all Polk subs. As for looks - you got to be kidding man. Uglyest sub u ever seem.
Grow up.
Wolves10, You must be a child also but if not prove me wrong by being mature. My explanation had nothing to do with the freaking price man. It is a pathetic Panny sub with 5" drivers. This is what is used in "plug and go" systems. Once again this is a POLK forum. Get it.
wolves10
12-29-2002, 09:22 PM
um
i must have overlooked the rule where it says im only allowed to talk about polk products.
what reciever do you use?
not polk audio? oh.. goodness.. maybe you should get one of them.
oh my, they dont make recievers.
looks like you should stop belittling yourself
and, i like my sub.. sounds good and its 5 1/2" actually..
i dont even understand why you would want a sub of that magnitude.. i mean really.. when was the last time you cranked it up..
if you listen to music with that thing cranked, you've got issues.. becasue when i crank my 'pathetic panny sub' it ruins the song
NOT BECASUE it sounds bad, becasue theres too much bass.

WOW!!!!
You made alot of progress.
Hey, I can give you some other HT forums were u can make an ASS out of yourself also..!!!

yeah is that your solution for everything
calling people asses
you remind me of a lot of people i know: just becasue they have it, they automatically think its the best of everything

I have one thing to say about that, if u have reguards to how i post, and act - simple as 1-2-3, DONT READ THEM! i never seemed ne sub, i think the PSW1200 is a nice lookin sub, the thing that i think makes it look ugly is the HUGE bottum firing power port, too big - makes it look like oversized piece of furniture with 5 inch stands attached to the bottum...but this is my opinion, and if im an @$$ for it.....then so be it
ohh yeah, what does what i think a sub looks like have to do with my maturity??????????????????
wolves10
12-29-2002, 09:44 PM
scottvamp, if your so mature why dont you stop this petty little argument?
oh ok.. leave it to the 13 year old right?
sheesh

Wow! I hadn't read this thread until now as the answer to the original question is an easy one. Whatever sounds best for you given your speakers in your room with your likes and dislikes. When I first hung my rears I used paper clips and poked about a dozen holes on each side; whether side wall or rear, before I found what I liked. Ironically it was where I tried them first!
I have Polk speakers in my laptop computer. Even if I get rid of my mains (fat chance), this alone gives me as much right to be here as somebody that buys the current flagship for every room. So long as you have Polks and play nice you are welcome and encouraged to post on this forum.
wolves10:
I've been into audio equipment for around 20 yrs. My current favorite speaker is also a DIY with Radio Shack drivers. I applaud your effort and enthusiasm. Considering the size of these rears, I would try to put the behind you with a "strong" toe-in. The shelves are a very good idea if you have the room. Make sure to connect to studs and leave enough room so they are not flush/parallel with the back wall. Ear level is best if your room is big enough. If not, tilt them both in and down. I've done the doorstops. This may have already been covered in this thread. I read quick as I jumped to the last page first and wnated to quickly find out where things went crazy.
Welcome to the Forum!
Mxsty...(Sid):
Some day I'm going to ask you what drawing program you use. I like it and would be interested in something like this. I say someday as my Win95 POS is overtaxxed as it is. Good draws!
