what kind of head phones to buy

I don't know what kind of head phones to buy i would like to spend under $100 dollars. Unless head phones that are good cost more than that.

Good selection and pretty fair advice. I have had a headroom "desktop" headphone amp for several years and can attest that the amp greatly improves the quality of the phones. I have heard that the "mobile" line, however, really does not add too much.

Having owned a wide variety of headphones(12) I will take my Sony MDR-6v over any of them. They can be found on amazon for around $70 I believe.

You mean the Sony MDR-V6 (but not the MDR-V600, a whole different animal). I have been meaning to get a pair of these; I used to use them when I was involved at my college radio station. This headphone is one of those studio standards and has been in production for over 20 years. These are closed-style, so external sound will not leak into the earcups.

Otherwise, te Grado SR60 and SR80 are also great headphones. Some say they're uncomfortable but they work fine for me (I owned my pair of SR60 for over 10 years).....although I changed the pads to pads from Sennheiser HD-414's. Open-style headphones, so external sound will leak in and others will hear you as well. Chunky cord....definitely not phones for portable application.

I've had a pair of Grado R-1 ($1,000 plus) and the new AKG-701s beat them out of the water. Best cans I've ever heard. I bought a pair on eBay for $240 delivered. (retail is $495)
