Of to Portland Oregon again - what to d there?

I have to go back to Oregon on business (Hermiston OR is getting a new wind farm, woohoo) - Sunday flight and leaving to head back on Wednesday, I think I will have Monday and Tuesday afternoons to look around Portland.

Any resturaunt, activities, stereo shops, must see places, give me some ideas,

Shopping is always good there because of the no sales tax.

Take a drive out to Astoria. On the way back stop at a few of the vineyards. Oregon is well known for its Pinot.

Also, if you have to return for a follow up visit. The Portland Brewers Festival is excellent chance to taste lots of beers. It's a competition. All Breweries that enter are only allowed to enter one beer. It's a great time with live bands down on the river. It starts Jul 24th this year.

Ships from the US Navy, Coast Guard, Canada and occasionally Japan have made the rose festival an annual shore leave event since 1907. Not coincidently those dates, over the years, coinicided with an increase in preganancy rates.

The festival ended Jun 8th this year. :(


I was there for the opening day (I think it was opening day) on my last trip, went to the carnival down at the river.

Second vote for Jimmy Mack's. Everytime I go to Portland I always stop by and have a great dinner and listen to live Jazz. Always top quality musicians.

Also, you can check out Audio Specialties if you are interested in vintage gear. It's at NE 102nd and Halsey. He has a very nice set of Luxman tube mono blocks with correct tube preamp now ($3,500). Tons of mint late 70s Japanese receivers.

If you get in Sunday before too late, stop in a Salty's on Marine Drive just north of the airport runway on the Columbia River. They have an aclaimed Sunday brunch that no self respecting traveler on an expense account would pass up.

Sorry, you've just missed Rat Dod and Gov't Mule. No fix for that.

Hit Jake's Crawfish downtown for dinner. A Portland landmark.

Henry's across Burnside has a great happy hour. It's in the old Henry Winehart brewery.

One block away from these two establishments is Powell's Books which may be the largest bookstore in the world. You can loose an entire day there.

If the weather is nice and you like being on the water, try the Island Cafe on Tomahawk Island (Jantzen Beach exit on I-5). Or go to the Tom McCall waterfront downtown for a stroll and people watching

Portland is famous for craft brewing. If you buy a single beer made in St Louis or Colorado (including flat tire), I can't guarantee your safety. There are several hundred if not thousands to choose from, so don't drink the same one twice.

The nightlife is concentrated downtown. Monday and tuesday are slow nights. If you can't stand cigarette smoke and want a nightcap, head across the river to Vancouver, Washington where smoking is taboo.

The drive along the Columbia river is pretty sweet. In Maryhill, Washington just across the river you'll see a replica of Stonehenge. it's pretty cool. but you'll have to cross the river to get to it, but it won't be to far out of your way. There is also a Museum in Maryhill.

I don't live near Portland, so the other's will be of more help.

To bad you don't have more time.. a trip to the Oregon coast is spectacular and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes a little slice of heaven now and then. :D

You are correct, it is a 3 hour drive. I am in Portland now, will drive to Herminston in the morning for a meeting, then drive back Monday evening. Then meeting here in Portland on both Tues and Wens. and then a 2pm flight home, whambamthankyoumam

1. Visit Echo Audio, one of the truly great new/used shops in the country.
2. Go see Ft Clatsop. Lewis and Clark's second winter home.
3. Drive down hwy 101 about 40 min. from the fort and have lunch in Cannon Beach
4. Drive another 45min. and have ice cream at the Tillamook Cheese Factory.
5. Visit the Air Museum just south of Tillamook
6. Stop in a some of the wineries.
7. See the Spruce Goose in McMinville.

The best selection of micro brews around. I have friends in Portland and every time we are there we go to a different pub. Great beers to choose from. Better than Seattle by far. The rose garden is beautiful. Never been to Echo Audio, will have to someday. Have fun!
