You never know what lies around the next corner. I recently got re-connected with a very old friend of mine (Rob). It's been great to finally figure out where he ended up--prior to finding him, last contact, March 1982.

Anywho, we've been talking via email for nearly a year now, off & on. I decided to send a pic of my new passive (he was a bit of an audio nut too) and made mention that I've scanned ebay for years to find a pristine Pioneer SX-780--my first piece of hi-fi gear.

Rob emails back "today is your lucky day, oldest and best friend of mine, I happen to have a mint condition SX-780 in it's original box in the garage for the low, low price of.....shipping, and a photo of it in it's new home."

Now that's truly an old FRIEND.

How do you say no to something like that? I promised him the SX would stay in the family. It touched me, seriously--not because of what it is, but what he did.

here's the actual email from Rob:

Well, well my oldest & bestest friend, today is your lucky day....My mint-condition SX-780 (who you already personally know) just happens to still be nicely packed in her original box, in my garage, just waiting to be appreciated by someone trusted who would truly enjoy her for her retro purity, classic beauty, and priceless memories... nothing would make me happier than for that to be YOU!And, I'll make her yours for the low, low cost of..... shipping, a picture of her in her new home, and a beer...(see attachment)

He sent this pic too...

We used to listen to this receiver in his room when I was a punk-ass bitch, flippin burgers at McDonald's and zits all over my face. I remember he had some type of Marantz speakers--they were nice, much larger than bookshelves, but not towers (popular in the 70's); and a Pioneer CTF-750 Pioneer cassette deck. I think we bought both of ours at the same stereo show down at the Checkerdome in STL during one their stereo expose things.. Just frickin awesome.

I had to google it, nice old receiver. That looks like something my old buds and I would listen to while doing the things young adult males did in the late 70's.

absolutely great story, 'cept for the zits part, the original box  might be one of the last in the country, enjoy it the second time around, like anyone has to tell ya that.....

You must have lived in STL when I did in the 70's, I saw Zeppelin at the Checkerdome in '77, I never saw expose things though, I was only 15.

Once a year they would have a big stereo blowout at the Checkerdome. You could get stuff 50-75% off, it was very cool. I remember seeing some Pioneer HPM-1100's made out of acrylic..badass. IIRC, I bought my SX-780 and my Pioneer CT-F500 cassette deck that day.

I was 15 in 1977 too.

Knowing how anal Rob was/is, I'll bet the SX is mint.
