Okay my friends car craped out so I spend most of my day yesterday getting the stuff out. He was so upset about not having a car and having a nice system he told me if I want to use any of the stuff until he gets a new car I can. WOW what a friend. So I borrowed his kenwood 10 inch sub the box and the alpine amp. My question is this until I run my REAL power wire can I use speaker wire to power it I will not be cranking it rely loud. I know that I have to install a fuse as well. It's street wire. This is the stuff.http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=183450&i=211UCT12&tp=1359

IMHO, 12GA's kinda thin for you to be running your power through it. How many amps/watts (whichever you prefer) are we talking about? If I were you, I'll just wait till I get proper power wires. Better safe than sorry.

It is a Alpine MRP-M450. Here are the specs. http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=120&i=500MRPM450&tp=115

going through the link you posted, even the guys at crutchfield recommend a 8GA power/ground wire...if it were me, I'd stick with that.

i wish you would have asked me that question a few weeks ago.

... but you can usually find 8 or 10 gauge amp kits pretty cheap.

@bigaudiofanatic
I'd like to volunteer too but I'm offshore, my extra wires' at home and home's half-way around the world from you. good luck though.

tip: patience. ;-) it's almost "next week" already anyway.

Just save some $$, buy a "good" amp kit. Then take your time and install the kit correctly, leaving the extra wire for when you get your own stuff...

Dont use speaker wire to power your amps. Its not designed to handle that much current and besides, its way too small. Walmart has 8 gauge wiring kits for like $20. No excuse not to use one.
