View Full Version : preparing a poll on best CD players under 1k

OK, so what I'd like to do is conduct a poll on best CDP that retail new for less than 1k (much like SteveinAz polls on interconnects and speakers cables)
But before I put the poll together, I'd like to compile a list of candidates. I will definately be putting these three in the list of contenders:
a) Rotel 1072
b) Cambridge Audio 640 v2
c) Rega Planet
Please let me know of other contenders that should be put into this poll. (I believe that I can have a total of up to 10 (???). SS and Tube (though I don't know if any tube players retail for less than 1k new) are both OK.
While I do plan to buy used eventually, I thought setting the new price perimeter at 1k or under was the easiest way to come up with a target list.

You don't need no stink'in poll. Just buy a Jolida 100 CDP if you like playing with tubes, or a Rotel RCD-1072 if you don't.

Add the Rega Apollo to your list if the first post doesn't answer your question.

Don't over think it; just go and buy something, used. Listen for a while, if you like it you keep it, if you don't you buy something else. The beauty of buying used is that you can sell for about the same, sometimes more.

I would also add the Consonance cd120 linear in there as well. Just seems to do everything right by my ears. I prefer it over the jolida myself. It isn't as heavy a hitter as the jolida but it is much smoother and more amalogue sounding. It also has excellent separation of instruments for an inexpensive player.
Good luck,
Mike

Jolida JD100 with EI Gold Pins.
You can play with the tubes to tailor the sound to compliment your equipment and or room.

Out of everything listed here, my choice would be coin toss between the Arcam and Rotel. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the responses thusfar. I'm still going to give a little more time for folks to chime in before I put it together. Maybe I don't really need a poll, as some have indicated, but I'm going to go ahead and make one so as to give as many people as possible the chance to give their input. Then, after voting, they can provide additional commentary, if they like (especially, they have directly compared any of the models on the list and what their impressions are).

Maybe you should do a poll to see which ones to include. :)
I'm not sure what I'd get but the Jolida would be high on the list.
