frustrated at finding a cab that would hold all my ever-expanding stuff and still be mobile. finally decided to design my own.

for your amusement Here's a rough image:

OK, so it might be BFuggly - but finally a proper home for my CSiA6... and likely enuf air space for new Onk 875

Here's my plan for wire routing -- really would appreciate any better idea's you'd have as well as possible attaching accessories (besides the ever-venerable velcro)

What's not apparrent here is that the cab back (and thusly rats nest) is the first thing you see when you enter my house.

On the cab you need to add an extra set of wheels, and move them to under the vertical pieces of the cab. If they are left in the center the will warp the cabinet.

hi BEN: very astute - old drawing misleading, metal plates of wheel tops actually 1/4" from edge, on a thick half-lapped (1 1/4 solid maple) trolley designed to distribute weight, (as well as transfer some to outer corners) but yes if I just screwed to cab underside at location shown, I'd definitely have probs. probably should show pic, as this was oddly hardest part of design since also had to be careful mid-underside didn't sag.

The weight from all the shelves will be focused where I drew the arrows. I know maple is a good solid wood, but it is still something to be considered, and maybe mentioned to the builder. Ii look forward to seeing the finished product. I personally think racks are ugly(I see flames coming:eek:).

I personal think maple is a solid wood.I suggest u to go for maple its a wonderaful idea to have wheels for the cab because we can move it were every we can place without any effort. The weight from all the shelves will be focused where I drew the arrows.

SARAH: yes maple is a solid wood, more importantly it's Hard wood, and one of the densest at that. (really fabulous stuff)

Sarah - don't worry: i know where the weight stress points are. I didn't want to go with 8 casters as this can seriously impede pivoting.(vital due to myplacement). Building a very strong dolley will prevent sagging + allow weight to transfer. Trust me on this, I was a professional designer/woodworker for 15 years.

thanks for your input.

PS: take a look at this cabinet:http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?I=6318527E&g=281850&mybuyscid=1480528389
I've seen the underside, base doesn't even have crossbars, those are really just 3 independant extrusions with 1/2" wheels, the cabinet is MDF (not ply&solid as mine)

Reported.
Used part of Ben's comment in her(?) own reply, very poorly written for a 1st post-- not to mention the blaring signature link.

Would never have guessed that from such an amatuer stick drawing
Of course I'm kidding--Actually I'm impressed-Very well done. :D
I love when you can see the end product in the design phase before you even get to work on it.
Awesome!

Just curious, have you looked into the Salamander designs? Apparenlty they're modular and quite flexible (I've been looking into them)
I saw this shot on the gon, which I thought was pretty cool how they handled the two Mono's.

Apparently the cabs, doors, shelves and bridges are all swappable, etc. So you could design what you need.
Another shot with a solid top, but still a space for a center.

Both of those designes appear to be built off the S30 or S40 foundation.

Just curious, have you looked into the Salamander designs?

Yes: I've been lusting after these for some time - I like them for features you mentioned, flexibility in particular - but they're really pretty damned pricey. A rare case where custom is actually cheaper.
I nearly managed to buy a unit off someone here, but turned out that shipping was just too prohibitive. (might acct for hi-cost of salamanders)
Would never have guessed that from such an amatuer stick drawing
Was actually pretty embarrassed to post the rendering (used to do serious ones for clients) but it's extremely time consuming to fuss with wood-mapping, proper lighting and edge-detail - so for myself I just rough it out to get an idea of what things would look like - & work out some construction details.

Are the units you pictured still up on audiogon? If so, any links?

The one with the two mono's (http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?accsrack&1224891191&/Salamander-Synergy-Maple-w/CD-) its in Huron OH, 250 lbs-looks like he'd ship it freight only

And the Black one (http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?accsrack&1224960224&/Salamander-two-S30-stands-and)

Actually I think just search for Salamander you find a few.
Yeah shipping is going to be the kicker.

I hear ya, yeah I tried for one myself, but it appears that I lost out-I was ready to drive up there and all. Oh well. :(. I've seen them in Best Buy-Magnolia-apparently thier on clearance-check it out-however it may only be the display models and the one's in Delaware were pretty messed up on the top.

Xandra, how goes your search/design for the cabinet?
Can you repost the pic of you're wire routing plan? I can't see the one you already posted.
