Own a OPPO 980?

I'd like some input before I buy one of these PLEASE!

How does it handle Music CD's?
Had yours for long.....how is the reliability?
Will it still upscale to the 720p my TV does with composite?

My TV has HDMI but Receiver does not.

I know I'm full of questions but I'm playing catch up here....so be kind! :D

It's a great player for $169 but for a little bit more you can get so much more!

The problem is that I think a lot of people have caught on because it's really hard to find a Denon 3910 used now. When i bought mine for $400 there were dozens for sale all over the place.

I just did a forum search and what I read isn't too impressive.
Maybe I'll stick with my older Sony 5 disk DVD till it dies?

Sit back and enjoy your player and watch the Blu-ray player wars begin! With new manufacturers getting their own players out along with some company's releasing their 3rd or so generation players its should get extremely interesting and competitive; Denon, Pananasonic, Pioneer, Marantz, Yamaha, Oppo, etc.

Once some of the prices fall you should be able to go into the market and get a nice entry level player for hopefully 300-350$ once all is said and done. Therefore rather than perhaps having an incremental increase in picture quality you can hold out for a true leap in picture quality.

Is Blue ray backward compatable?

A blue ray player should upscale standard DVDs to match your TVs max res.And Ive seen that dennon 3910 on audiogoN.(You can also get a nice hotrod board upgrade for it for 199.00.)

Are you looking for a player to play mostly DVD's?

I hardly use mine for DVD's, Actually I never put a DVD in it yet since I have for the past 3 months.

I use it primarily for regular cd's (redbook) & for SACD playback.

You may be waiting a long time for your sony to die, I have a single disc Sony ES played I bought 14 years ago, It still works fine. But when I hooked up the Denon the change in sound was amazing. Much better detail, better bass, less distortion.

I'm so happy with my 4-Year old used $400 Denon.

FWIW, I have a 981, I like it for HT, and I feel it does a good job upconverting. It's hooked up optically for audio, and hdmi for video, and in that arrangement I don't like it at all for 2 ch music.

I like the sound I get out of it for HT, just not 2 channel listening.

I also just replied to your other thread. I just picked up the 980H a couple of weeks ago and I really like it. It plays audio great and the video DVD playback is great also. I highly recommend it.

I believe the Denon players are overpriced. I used to own a Denon DVD-1920, before it got fried in an electrical storm. The 980H is half the price of my old Denon, and I tell you flat out: - the Oppo player is better. Now, I don't know if the Oppo player would be better than a 3930CI, which is Denon's highly regarded current model, but the 3930CI costs $1400, and I think that is an awful value compared to the Oppo. I had chatted with someone in the AVS forum regarding the 3930CI, and he regretted getting it. It just isn't worth the money. A 3910 is an older model. If you get it for $400, you're still paying a lot more, for an older piece of equipment, than you would for a brand new Oppo 980H.

Oppo made specific audio tweeks to the 980H player with the help of Nuforce, a high-end amplifier audio company.

You mentioned that you searched forums and you didn't read good things about the Oppo? I don't know where you looked, but I researched the Oppo unit extensively, and I found very good reviews all over the place. Now that I have it, I concur with those reviews. (it was in my research that found out all of this information).

I have a 3 year old 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV - that has 720P max resolution. DVD movies on the 980H look better on it than from my older Denon DVD-1920.

I hope the empirical evidence I offer is helpful.
