Surely that's based on album sales. Billboard and all that...
Or possibly time spent on the Billboard chart?

I would think so since artistic merit is soooooo debatable.

Bing Crosby sold more records than Elvis I believe. I didn't see his name on the list and also James brown should be at least in the top 10 his songs did well on the top 20 and 40 charts without very much top 40 airplay and that's unbelievable.

That's a good observation. Bing had the biggest selling single of all-time until Elton's remake "Candle in the Wind" for Princess Di.

I believe Elvis' sales, on a worldwide basis, represented about 10% of all recorded music.

I'm so glad Zappa was not in that list.

Looking through the list....hard to imagine Usher ranks higher than Phil Collins, Billy Joel, or the Beach Boys. I can't name one single Usher song even if my life depends on it.

No Van Halen?

Great line Peter.

I can't believe Michael Jackson outsold Captain Beefheart worldwide.

Just remember, any time a magazine or someone puts out a list, they make it specifically to be talked about and debated. They make these lists purposefully divisive because it gives them publicity.

"No commercial potential" was the phrase that the guys at MGM or Verve were quoted as saying in response to one of the early Mothers demo tapes (or wrote that on the tape and handed it back to Tom Wilson). Frank loved it and usually printed it somewhere on the first few albums.

Don't blame Zappa for Phish. Phish's music looks silly when compared to the depth and complexity of Zappa's music.;)
