which amp to drive my lsi15's?

I've been building out my new system and I am a definite newbie. I have had many recommendations I should get a separate amp for my lsi15's. I also have a onkyo 806. Could someone please help me my selection. $ is definitely a concern because I've broken the bank.

Also if there is anything you have seen in the classifieds, please let me know.

I have an Outlaw amplifier, and I like mine. There are also Emotiva amps that are affordable. You can get either one for about $700 for about 115 wpc for 7 channels. They are both online only companies; and that makes their products cheaper compared to the ones that have dealers at local audio shops, like Rotel, Parasound, Anthem, and whatnot. If you don't mind buying used, then I guess your choices are expanded more. :)

I'll second the Emotiva stuff. You can get the XPA-5 for $799 or the XPA-2 for $799 also. The XPA-5 will give you 350 watts x 5 or 450 watts x 2 channels into 4 ohm, or the XPA-2 will give you 500 watts x 2 into 4 ohm. Check them out and let us know how you go.

The only thing about Emotiva in their specification is that their watts-per-channel numbers are given only at 1 kH whereas, Outlaw's is from 20-20,000 Hz. I guess, with this catch considered, XPA-5's true rating for 5 channels should be less than 350 wpc.

what receiver would be able to drive these without an extra amp? I have an Onkyo HT-R540 and while I don't think it'll be good to drive LSi15s to half their potential, would it suffice to drive them without breaking the speakers?

Running LSI 15's will put alot of strain on any receiver a external amp is recommended.

Used Adcom gear is very reasonable. That's where your going to get you money worth.

If money is tight I would look at:

Adcom 545II 150watts@4ohms (around $200)
Adcom 555 325watts@4ohms(around $300)

You might want to check your research on that quote. The Emo rep came on here and explained this....

I have an Outlaw Model 7700 7-channel Balanced Amplifier for 300 watts/channel @4-ohms, and I am very pleased by its performance. If you are looking for a new unit, then it would be something to consider too. There is Model 7500 5-channel Balanced Amplifier also for the same power rating for $550 less. :)

Check NAD receivers. They are expensive new and not all that common used, but they have a reputation for very powerful output at 4 ohms and can sometimes be found on eBay, Audiogon, craigslist.com ... There are several Club members that use them.
