So the other day I'm thumbing through my Dad's CD collection and stumble across Stevie Ray Vaughan. Although he had been a favorite of my Dad for years, I've never paid it much attention. I listened to it for the first time and WOW, that was awesome.
Seeing as I'm just getting into this genre and my generation has really missed the boat on this type of music (I'm 24), I was counting on Club Polk to point me in the right direction. What other artists play this type of music? I really enjoy the slow, blues-ie (not a real word, I know) songs. The ones that are rock inspired are really good too, but the slow ones are awesome.
Thanks in advance.

Blues is best enjoyed LIVE. Expect some of the best to be presented in smaller venues and biker bars. A couple of my favorites are Smokin' Joe Kubek and Tinsley Ellis. :)

This is like punk rock blues. This stuff is so hard core and the best new blues to come out in years. The album is from the late 1990's. Most artists just mine old territory but this is such a new take on an old style.
This is best enjoyed with a couple shots of Jim Beam.:D

He's not really blues. Mediocre at best.

This is great people. I've now purchased a few of the artist's listed here including Bonamassa, Jonny Lang, B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, RL Burnside, Hooker as well as a few others.
It's great finding another genre of music to collect, especially one you had never even considered.
Let's keep it going...

A lot of good suggestions here and I agree with two things.
1. John Mayer has no place in this list.
2. Lots of great recordings available but your best blues are going to be local acts in a dive bar, if available.
don't forget Robert Johnson to get to the roots.
Luther Allison, Albert Collins, Tony Castro, Ella, Billie
Can't believe I once dissed this genre. Love the rip your heart out, twist it, stomp on it, rise up and keep on smilin' kind of blues.

John Mayer is an incredible blues guitar player, with a very talented band.
I recently got a his latest release, a double live CD. good stuff.
IMHO he belongs in that list at least as much as Johnny Lang does ,
which is also hardly a hard core blues singer.
I agree, of course, that The next SRV or B.B. king won't appear anytime soon.
besides, its not a competition now is it?

I do like John Mayer, but I would agree that his sound is different than most on the list. I've listened to most of Jonny Lang's stuff in the past few days and don't care for much of it. That being said, "Lie to Me" is an amazing album IMO. I get the sense that a lot of the newer stuff is made in an attempt to attract a bigger audience (like Mayer). That being said, "Lie to Me" hasn't left the CD player since it was picked up. Great album!

I don't like it just because it's watered down by those punk boys. Fat Possum have most of R.L.'s catalog, but not all. A friend of a friend did a great documentary on him and T-Model Ford, which was subsequently squashed by the Fat Possum execs. This guy Bradley also does video stuff for the Flaming Lips, which is about as far from R.L. as you can go.
He did some very grim blues, and him and Mance Lipscomb both died in the month during/following Hurricane Katrina. Mance is such old-time blues, he disses B.B. King for being a pretender.Dissed.

I didn't think they watered it down. I thought that the adding of the guitars brought it back to its basics. Anywho........ different strokes. I saw the documentary that had the Fat Possom dudes in it, 'You See Me Laughin''. R L thought both those guys were ripping him off. I thought it was facinating. There was some T Model in it as well. Wow that guy sure has some stories.

Stacy Mitchart kicks ass. I discovered him, along with a BUNCH of others on 'Bluesville'
IIRC, Stacy did a blues cover of a Ledzep song, I think 'Whole Lot of Love', but I'm not sure.
Just discovered dude by the name of Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters. Friggin guitar was amazing!
If you have ANY connection to satellite radio, check out the blues stations. Just leave it on for entire afternoon, you'll discover a lot of people.

I replied to this same question in a different forum recently, so I'll just paste it below. This is mostly geared towards many of the originators of electric blues.
I didn't list a lot a specific CDs (except the ones in quotes), but rather the original labels of the recordings. You'll find a lot of good "best of" collections from Chess/MCA and Rhino based on the artists' work from these labels.
Muddy Waters: Chess
Howlin' Wolf: Chess
Little Walter: Chess
Sonny Boy Williamson: Chess
Lowell Fulson: Chess
Elmore James: Fire
B.B. King: Modern/Kent/RPM/Crown
John Lee Hooker: Modern, Vee-Jay
Jimmy Reed: Vee-Jay
T-Bone Walker: Atlantic, Imperial, "T-Bone Blues"
Freddie King: King/Federal
Albert King: King, Stax
Johnny "Guitar" Watson: "Best of (Rhino)"
Guitar Slim: "Sufferin' Mind"
Otis Rush: "Right Place, Wrong Time", "So Many Roads (Live)"
Buddy Guy: Chess, Vanguard
Eric Clapton: "Blues" - This does not necessarily fit with the others, but is a good compilation of his Blues work.
Here's some great blues for ya. It's turned into one of my favorite CDs. Track 5 will blow the windows out with bass and Etta James on track 7 is as good as it gets.
Excellent remastering with good analog quality sound.

One of the best live blues series is the three album "American Folk Blues Festival" series from '63, 64', and the lost blues tape release from those years. Very nice live soundstage that will make you think the artists on stage are in the room with you. Favorite track is "Sail On" by Roosevelt Sykes

Here's your answer and solution. You need to find blues music. Not only do you need to find and entire genre' you need to find about 15 minutes to play in class. Well; here's your song, it's called "Blues-o-rama" by Duke Robillard. He plays a song that's roughly sixteen minutes long and composed of other blues songs pieced together by multiple other blues artists. Its a great song that will fit your report perfectly.
I listen to a lot of blues music.
You're gonna have to set up a good mono turntable for '78s.
Some of the best recordings EVER are on 78 viny. Stereo is cool but the good "old" treasures are scribed in the old thick wax.
Don't let them get away without a listen. MUST have music!!!

I'm 25 and a recent Blues convert (besides rock blues which I've been digging since I was allowed to transition into secular music, yes I said allowed :D). But there's a guy no one has mentioned who is quite popular in Europe but still hasn't found mainstream success in The States. The Ironman himself, Michael Burks! In all seriousness, I've seen him perform twice at The Double Door Inn in Charlotte NC (a staple blues venue in the southeast: Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dave Alvin, Leon Russell, Buddy Guy, Junior Brown, Bob Margolin etc have played there) and he's absolutely amazing. There's so much emotion in his playing and he plays for 3 - 4 hours with only one break. Mmmm, damn I can't wait to see him again. I Smell Smoke is a great album.
Watch this all the way through, but if you must skip, he ends the solo at 3:30ish in.

Look up a guy named Ben Prestage, he's a one man band and one of the most talented performers I've ever seen live. He plays cigar box guitars, among others, and is starting to make a name for himself. Hendrix's blues are still some of the best I've ever heard, but I'll give my nod to Albert King as my favorite blues artist ever. And if you're going to include Eric Clapton on the list, then John Mayer deserves his place as well. He's the best blues guitarist I've ever heard live, and I've seen quite a few. His live album is really good, especially his cover of "Bold as Love." It's about time to forgive him for "Your Body is a Wonderland."
