Can anyone tell me why so many people on other "audiophile" forums love to rag/bag/dump -on the PSW 505 sub? Is there a better sub for the current discontinued price of about $290 on the market? Are the subs that others recommend for slightly (450-550) more one third to half again better than the PSW 505? Or is this just a case of alot of nose -in -the -air audiophiles who say one sub is better than another just off a spec sheet or reputation?
How many have actually demoed the unit? I know thats a hell of alot of questions but I need to know, does it really suck like these knuckle heads say? (for the money)

The 505 was/is a decent sub on paper and there are some owner/fans out there. I've only heard it in store a few times with hit or miss impressions. It certainly sounded very boomy at one place, but I assume it can sound good, too. Comparing it to more capable ID subs, it doesn't fare all that well. They will play lower, louder, cleaner and with better articulation. They will also be larger. The original MSRP of ~ $500 made it a poor bargain vs. similarly priced ID subs. At < $300, it's a personal decision. Will you get from 1.5 to 2X more performance from a SVS/Hsu/ED sub in the $315-$550 range? ... Yep, especially below 40hz.

I'm not a big fan of Polk subs as I feel there are better for the $$. SVS is always a good option for the money. I also like SOME Velo and Klipsch subs. You should look at Epik, but it will cost you a bit more....

Not the best at $500+ but at the discounted price of $290 the 505 is a deal.

Someone posted this at another forum, but same OP...

I have auditioned a few Polk subwoofers, but never found one I liked.

So I would be willing to put my money where my mouth is, and say this sub will out perform the 505.

+ 1 ... I've heard this sub. A friend did a review. It's the real deal for < $300. It aces the Bic H100 in output and SQ, mid 20s, punchy midbass, articulate.

Error 404'd. :(

That being said.... i paid less than $300 for my Klipsch, and i would dare to say that it stomps the 505 in pretty much every aspect.

The 505 is good from 25Hz and up. I think its a good buy in the $2## range. This is a test I ran a couple years ago.

Cool - real data!

Would you have, by chance, any chart on the Epik Valor - that one has bubbled to the top of my list as my current favorite for a sub upgrade.

Thanks,
Erik
